What's Cookin' - Calloway Style

If you are looking for some really good, usually very easy recipes, you might like to try The Augusta Chronicle, Augusta, Georgia. Karin Calloway (Mrs. Bond Calloway) writes a weekly column offering many recipes and she has written several cookbooks. I've tried several of her recipes and they were delicious. Of course they were - after all she's a Calloway!

U. S. Joseph Callaway Line

I would like to thank Teresa Snyder for confirming the identity of Robert F. Callaway, whose obituary was published in the Nov 2007 newsletter.

Hello Donna,

I saw the obituary for Robert F. Callaway of Bethany, Mo, in today's newsletter. I, too, felt that he was the son of James Hadley Callaway (son of Orin Callaway), born 3/19/1909, passed away 1/31/1997 and was buried in the Miriam Cemetery, as was Robert.

Samuel Roberson of the Roberson Funeral Home in Bethany confirmed that Robert was indeed the son of James Hadley and Virginia Towns Callaway. He handled the arrangements for them also.  Samuel is mailing me a copy of Virginia Callaway's obituary. He did not have one for James Hadley, but I will see if I can find one for him.

Thank you for printing Robert Callaway's obituary. It has been very helpful as I only had a birth and death date for James Hadley.  I will send more information on this line as I find it.

Thanks again,
Teresa Snyder

Editor's Note - Teresa was also able to obtain a copy of Virginia Towns Callaway's obituary and has shared it with us.

Donna,
Following is the obituary of Virginia Towns Callaway, wife of (James) Hadley Callaway and mother of Robert F. Callaway who passed away September 30, 2007.

Samuel Roberson of Roberson Funeral Homes, Inc. in Bethany, Missouri was kind enough to send it to me. No name of newspaper or date of publication is given.

Truth or Fiction - Here's an interesting snippet from Anne Leyden. Anne descends from this line and is bemoaning her lost inheritance!

From the Richmond Times Dispatch Genealogy Column, 26 November 1905 -

" . . . Colonel James Callaway . . . was living in Spotsylvania county, Va, 1732 to 1734. He was a large landed proprietor in that county, and was in the House of Burgesses from 1765 to 1769. He removed to Bedford county, and left there a large landed estate. He also owned all the land on which Chattanooga now stands, which was left to his Steptoe grandchildren, but was lost through their tardiness in pressing their claim."

Poor me. - Anne

A Callaway Man Who Understood Business

The following is a great story about a man who followed in his father's footsteps and more . . . Fuller E. Callaway, Jr. (1907-1992)

~ From the Lima News, Lima, Ohio, February 19, 1923

New York - (Special)
by B. C. Forbes

Whenever I write on the subject of salaries, Uncle Sam becomes richer, so many letters come pouring in. The most interesting one received following publication of this week's articles on high salaries has come from A. H. Ulm, of Washington, D.C.. Says Mr. Ulm:

"Your article on high salaries reminds me of a good story I've never seen in print.

"Several years ago Fuller E. Callaway, of LaGrange, Ga., outstanding figure in cotton manufacturing in the South, was employing a man for an executive position in his organization. He talked with him for an hour or more about what the man might do and so on. When he finished, the prospective employee asked:

"'Now, what about the salary I am to receive?'

"'Why, I never discuss that when employing a man like you' Mr. Callaway replied. 'I'll say this, however, the bigger the salary paid you the better I'll be pleased, for the greater will be the profits made on your work. You will be paid just what you are worth, and I would much prefer that it be $10,000 than $5,000.'

Callaway himself, the head of numerous corporations he organized is perhaps the highest paid man in the South."

Editor's Note - Fuller E. Callaway descends from the Peter Callaway line as follows:
Peter Callaway
John Callaway
Edward Callaway

Rev. Enoch Callaway

Descendants of Josiah Isaiah Callaway

Generation No. 1

1. JOSIAH ISAIAH6 CALLAWAY (ELIJAH WASHINGTON5, ISAIAH4, WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2, PETER1) was born 05 Dec 1806 in Peterstown, Giles Co., VA, and died 12 Apr 1849 in Clark, IL. He married (1) LETTICE BLANKENSHIP. She was born 13 Dec 1807, and died 1837. He married (2) SUSANNAH QUICK 01 Jan 1839. She was born 14 Jun 1808.

Children of JOSIAH CALLAWAY and LETTICE BLANKENSHIP are:

2. i. WILLIAM IRA7 CALLAWAY, b. 02 Feb 1826, Cabell Co., VA; d. 19 Sep 1879, Springlake Township, Tazewell Co., IL.
ii. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN CALLAWAY, b. 18 Oct 1827.
3. iii. WASHINGTON ELIJAH CALLAWAY, b. May 1829.
4. iv. NANCY JANE CALLAWAY, b. 15 Jan 1830, VA/IN; d. 02 Sep 1880, Tazewell Co., IL.
v. JOSIAH D. CALLAWAY, b. May 1837.

Children of JOSIAH CALLAWAY and SUSANNAH QUICK are:

vi. MARY7 CALLAWAY, b. Abt. 1840.
vii. CATHERINE CALLAWAY, b. Abt. 1845; m. JAMES NICCUM, Abt. Sep 1860.
Notes for CATHERINE CALLAWAY: The following information was submitted to CFA by Louise Calaway 11/2007.
Catherine Callaway
Susan Callaway and her children lived next door to a Niccum/Niccom family in 1860 headed by David Niccum (45, OH) and Annie Niccum (40, OH). Children are probably James (21, OH), Jonathan (19, OH), Morgan H (17, OH), Sarah E (14, IN), Alfred Riley (7, IN), and Luvina (6, IN)

A license to wed was given to NICESON, JAMES and CALLOWAY, CATHERINE 09/02/1860 Volume E /Page 22 CLARK County.

I have not looked for the proof of this WorldConnect Project entry for David Niccum and Anna Shannon who would fit the bill as parents for this James Niccum

David: · Birth: 1814 in OHIO

David: · Death: 6 JAN 1866 in Pekin (Tazwell Co.) Illinois

I did some very light tracing suggesting that Catherine may have died and this may be the same James Niccum who is shown on the following entry: NICCUM, JAMES and MCCANN, ANNA 05/11/1869 Volume A /Page 167 license 737 PIKE County.

I was unable to locate an 1870 entry for James and Anna but did find an 1880 entry that creates a possible avenue for research:

J. McCann (71, head, KY KY KY), Delila McCann (67, wife KY KY KY), James Nickum (40, son-in-law, OH OH OH), Anna Nickum (32, daughter, KY KY KY), Mary A. Nickum (7, gr daughter, MO IN KY), Marion Nickum (11, gr son, IL IN KY). From the birth locations of the children’s parents, looks like the children are not James’ but they could be Anna’s.

viii. MOSES CALLAWAY, b. Abt. 1846.

Notes for MOSES CALLAWAY: The following information submitted to CFA by Louise Calaway 11/2007

Moses Callaway
Within the Hamrick estate file are documents indicating that he and John P Hamrick were business partners. There is no indication of a genealogical relationship between Moses and John.

In the matter of the Estate of John P Hamrick, Deceased: The following is a full and perfect inventory of all the Real and Personal Estate of Moses Calloway and John P Hamrick deceased, late partners owned in partnership.

Signed Moses Callaway – 31 Jan 1873

Another paper:
In the matter of the Estate of John P Hamrick deceased liabilities of the late firm of Moses Callaway and John P Hamrick of which deceased member due and owing at the time of decease: Follows a list of a bunch of liabilities.

In William Ira Callaway’s Estate file, there is a copy of a signed note by Moses Callaway & Daniel Woodley. (Daniel Woodley was the brother-in-law of Moses Callaway through his marriage to Phoebe Ann Woodley.)

Aside from the marriage of Phoebe Ann Woodley to Moses Callaway 27 Oct 1867, I have nothing paperwise or otherwise to prove that this Moses Callaway is the Moses Callaway of the 1850 census.

Notes for ELIZABETH CALLAWAY: The following information submitted to CFA by Louise Calaway 11/2007.
1850 census – (November) Elizabeth is in the same household as Ira Callaway and Susan in Peoria, Illinois – age 3

Others in the household are: Washington, Josiah, Mary, Catherine, Moses

1860 census – (August) Elizabeth is in the same household as Susan Colaway/Coloway in Wabash Tsp., Clark Co., IL – age 11

Other in the household are: Charles W., Catharine, Moses

Elizabeth Callaway married John P Hamrick – 10 Jan 1867, recorded Vol C, Page 143 Tazewell Co., IL Marriages. There is no further genealogical information on the marriage license application.

1870 census - John P Hamric is listed in the census in Spring Lake Tsp., Tazewell Co., IL. , 5 Aug 1870, Page 22

His household includes:
John P Hamric: Age 32, Farmer, Born Prussia
Elizabeth: Age 22, Keeping House, Born Illinois
William: Age 3, At Home, Born Illinois

Emma B: Age 9/12, At Home, Born Illinois
Elizabeth Callaway Hamrick died in August 1872.
John P Hamrick died 9 Jan 1873 in Tazewell Co., IL.

1880 census:
William Hamerick in the residence of William & Cynthia McFarland (Spring Lake). The states of birth of William’s father = Virginia and his mother = Ohio. I think this may be because either William was adopted or the census taker make an error.

Elle Hammerick is in the residence of John Abel (Spring Lake). I think the census record says that Elle was adopted by John Abel. The birthplaces of her parents are not shown.

John P Hamrick served in the Civil War. He mustered in on 16 Aug 1861 at Peoria, IL and out on 11 Oct 1864 at Springfield, Sangamon Co., IL. His service was with Co. E 47th Reg Ill Infantry Vol. His physical description from the Company Descriptive Book: Height 5ft 8-1/2in; Light complexion; Blue eyes; Brown hair; Farmer. He was born in Verl, Prussia.

John P Hamrick’s Military Service File
I have a copy of John P Hamrick’s Military Service and Pension Application file from the National Archives. John never filed for a pension himself. That was done by his daughter, Ella. Within the file is a Declaration for Pension of Children Under Sixteen Years of Age as filed by Ella "Hamsick" Penning, aged 43, resident of Pekin, Tazewell Co., Illinois dated 19 Feb 1912 requesting the pension from the date of John’s death until her sixteenth birthday. The request was denied because John, himself, had never filed.

Within the military service file, is another document indicating that Elizabeth Hamrick had died in August 1872. (I have no other confirmation Elizabeth’s death and have been unable to locate a burial location for her.)

Within the military service file is a notarized document showing that Ellie Liza Hamrick married Jacob W. Penning 12 Jun 1887 in Tazewell Co. (The marriage is recorded in Volume 1, Page 197, License 2606 in Tazewell Co., IL Marriages.) This is the same license as abstracted by the Tazewell County Historical & Genealogical Society in their publication "Tazewell County, Illinois Marriages, Jan 1883 - Dec 1887." That listing is shown as follows:

Page 42: Penning, Jacob - 26 - Spring Lake-farmer-1st[marriage]-Europe-William Penning & Mary Snit (Sneit) to Ellie Liza Hamrick - 17 - Spring Lake - 1st [marriage] Spring Lake - John Hamrick & Elisabeth Calerway/Caleway) 12 Jun 1887 - Spring Lake, IL. AG Ziegeler mg Witnesses: LC Hammer, Lucy Hammer.

John P Hamrick’s Estate File
I have a copy of John P. Hamrick’s Estate file from Tazewell Co., Illinois. The estate was opened 28 Jan 1873. The Administrator was William Ira Callaway. (Callaway is spelled many ways in the papers included in the file, so I am settling on this spelling.)

To the Hon. David Kyes, Judge of the County Court of Tazewell County:
The petition of the undersigned William I Calloway respectfully represents that John P Hamrick late of Tazewell county, deceased, died on or about the 9th day of January A.D. 1873, leaving personal property and effects in this county of about the value of $500.00 leaving no last Will and Testament, as far as known to and believed by this petitioner. That said deceased left him surviving no widow, that left two minor children to wit; Ella F. Hamrick and Willie I. Hamrick as heirs. Your petitioner being Brother in Law of said deceased, therefore prays that Letters of Administration on the said estate of John P. Hamrick deceased, may be granted to him.
Signed: William I. Callaway
Sworn 28th day of January 1873.

Additional court document not provided to me in the estate file of John Hamrick.  It was in a group of papers that I copied in 1983 on a research trip to Salt Lake City that were in the “big ledger book” Court Records of Tazewell Co., Illinois – said document dated 1 Feb 1873.

“And it  further appearing that the said William I Callaway is the Uncle of said minors and a suitable person to have the custody, nurture and tuition of the said minors and the care and management of their estate, and no person having appeared to oppose the appointment of a guardian to said minors or to show cause why the prayer of said petition should not be allowed, it is therefore ordered that the said petition be granted.”

Record of Petition includes the following:
William I Hamrick, is a minor aged 5 years on the 17 day of October A.D. 1872
Ella F Hamrick is a minor aged 3 years on the 29 day of October 1872

Hence I believe we can how compute William’s birth date as 17 Oct 1867.  We already have confirmation of Ella’s birth date from her tombstone, which, mercifully, agrees with this information.

William Ira Callaway declares that he was the brother-in-law of John P. Hamrick. He was established as the Guardian for the two minor children, Ella Hamrick and Willie Hamrick. (There is no notation as to what happened to the Emma B of the 1870 census, and I have been unable to locate further information or a burial site.)

Appointment of Guardian for Ella Hamrick:  1 Aug 1883
I also have a copy of a record dated 1 Aug 1883:  Ella Hamrick, who is above the age of fourteen, requests appointment of John Abels as her Guardian.  Such appointment was approved.  (Notice that Ella was in the 1880 census with John Abels.)

William I Hamrick’s Estate File
William I Hamrick died 2 Nov 1908. I have a copy of William I Hamrick’s Estate file from Tazewell Co., Illinois. The estate was opened 8 Jan 1909 and closed in 1910. No assets remaining. Ella Penning signed a statement, indicating that she was the sister of William I Hamrick. As far as I can tell, he was not married and had no children. The estate file that I have is silent on this.

Burial spot for William I Hamrick is probably Oak Grove Cemetery, Mason Co., IL. This is based on the readings made by the Mason County Genealogical & Historical Society, Havana IL in the following publication: Cemetery Inscriptions Mason County, Illinois, Volume One (Townships of Forest City, Manito, Quiver) The cite is from p. 89: Oak Grove Cemetery: Hamrick, W.D. (R-12-10) - d. 2 Nov 1908.

Ella Hamrick Penning Meyer
From the cemetery readings as published by the TCHGS: Tazewell County Illinois Cemeteries: Pekin Township, Volume Eight – p. 268. Lakeside Cemetery: Ella Penning Meyer - w/o Harm - Oct 25, 2869 - Nov 27, 1917." Within the Lakeside Cemetery listing are the gravesites of many members of the Penning family.

From the Lakeside Cemetery listing prepared by TCHGS I have the following items:
Jacob W Penning – Dec 14, 1857 – Mary 26, 1913, Veteran Span Amer War IVC)
Ella buried with Meyer - shown as Ella Penning Meyer - w/o Harm – Oct 25, 1869 – Nov 27, 1917.
Harm H Meyer – Jan 31, 1869 – Jan 16, 1948

I have not confirmed the children of Ella and Jacob Penning. I do not have confirmation of the marriage between Ella Penning and Harm Meyer other than through the cemetery marker at this time. Jacob died approximately 5 years before Ella per information also from the Lakeside Cemetery list prepared by TCHGS.

Children of ELIZABETH CALLAWAY and JOHN HAMRICK are:

i. WILLIAM I.8 HAMRICK, b. Abt. 1867, IL; d. 02 Nov 1908, IL.
ii. ELLA F. HAMRICK, b. 25 Oct 1869, IL; d. 27 Nov 1917, IL; m. JACOB W. PENNING, 12 Jun 1887, Spring Lake, IL; b. 14 Dec 1857; d. 26 May 1913, IL.

Another Random Act of Genealogy Kindness -

The following information is from a paper published by Gail Blancett in the June 1996 issue of "The Carolina Herald and Newsletter" titled "Documenting Two Daughters of Henry Prince Sr., Revolutionary Soldier of Greenville District, SC." She very graciously posted this information on the Calloway forum at genforum.com.  I believe the Arestus Calloway mentioned in these documents is the same man as the Erastus Callaway mentioned in the Nov 2007 newsletter. Further, with the information provided below, I believe there is a good chance that Erastus Callaway descends as follows:
Joseph Callaway
Thomas Callaway
William Callaway
James Callaway
Erastus Callaway

Can anyone confirm or add information to this family line?

Editor's Note - CFA Member, Kendra Short has also sent us the following picture and information about Thomas E. Callaway who was the son of Erastus Callaway.

Donna -
Thanks again for all your help. The taller man on the right is Thomas E. Calaway. I'm told his eyes were blue. The man on the left is Andrew Jackson Sargent. The little girl is Rayola J. Calaway, granddaughter of the two men. The picture was taken around 1913 when she was 5-6 years old. Calaway of course was a confederate soldier - Sargent was from Pennsylvania and a Union soldier. Thomas' son, John W. Calaway, married Sargent's daughter. They both consented to have this one and only picture taken with their first grandchild. They rarely spoke to one another. They agreed to "agree to disagree" and let bygones be.

I thought that this was interesting photo background. I hope someone sees a resemblance in Thomas and I will make a genealogy connection.

Donna,
My name is Roy Whayne Callaway. My ancestors are from Franklin Township, Washington County, Indiana. I am sending my genealogy in hopes that through the Callaway Family Association you can help me connect to the Joseph, Richard, Charles, etc, etc lines.

As you can see there is a Joseph Callaway from Virginia in my line, but I cannot connect to any of the other Callaway lines. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. There are many Callaways and Boones buried in Washington County, Indiana.

Regards,
Roy Whayne Callaway

Me.

My questions have come about since I have been trying to join the DAR under John Callaway of Wilkes Co., Ga.
I have been told by a member of DAR that my Isaac isn't the Isaac of John Callaway.  But I have a copy of a will that lists an Isaac Callaway as a descendent.  As you can see, I have emphasized the STAMPS and LARKIN names of my ancestors.  I find AMY STAMPS listed as a spouse of a Callaway and I find LARKIN Callaway associated with (I think) the Flanders Callaway and Jemima Boone.  Can anyone help me out here?  I really want to join DAR and I have paperwork in on another ancestor but would also like to add John Callaway if I am a descendent of that line.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

I'd like to introduce myself. My name is Vicki Rae Collins, granddaughter to Daisy Marie Callaway, daughter of William H. Callaway.

Daisy Marie Callaway (left) and William H. Callaway & Ella Eckstein (right).

We are the line of Callaways located in Cincinnati, Ohio and Bright, Indiana.  Since my retirement and move home to be near family, I've been diligently trying to research my family history on my grandmother's side. I've accomplished all I can thus far, so I thought I'd take this approach in hopes of success.

I don't know much about my great-grandfather. I understand he was born in Indiana in 1868 worked in a pipe foundry. He married Ella Eckstein and together they supposedly operated as conf (confectioner) in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio in the early 1930's. Daisy (my grandmother) was the baby of the family.

Since I returned home, we have had two (2) Callaway Family Reunions. I thought perhaps you may be able to assist in moving forward in our research.
With warm regards,
Vicki

Editor's Note - I wrote back to Vicki and suggested that her family line could very possibly be from the following line of descent.
Peter Callaway
John Callaway
Ebenezer Callaway
William Callaway
Winder Callaway
Thomas Callaway
All census records show this to be the case with one uncertainty; Thomas shows a son born in 1868 in Indiana but he is only listed as Harry. Vicki's great grandfather is always listed as William. Could Harry be the same person as William H. Callaway? Can anyone help to identify this family line?
