Volume III  No. 11

FROM THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER  -  Pat Schnurr ( Schnurr200 at aol.com )

The holiday season is already upon us.  The department stores have been crammed with gift items, and decorations for several weeks now.  Each year we seem to move away from the real meaning of Christmas but as the day approaches we gradually begin to reflect on the birthday of Jesus.  It is then that we  make plans to help others and to reach out to our friends and families. Our ancestors have been doing this same thing for centuries. In reading through some of my research notes I came across this item.  I thought all of you might like to read it.

"Kellaway's Dole" an interesting item picked up while working in the Dorset Record Office showed many references to the name Kellaway in the village of Piddlehinton in Dorset. Between 1630 and 1780 Elizabeth, James, John, Christopher and Nicholas Kellaway controlled the Manorial Leases in Piddlehinton Village and surrounding land. In the parish church of St. Mary the Virgin, Nicholas Kellaway served as Overseer to the Poor.  In his will dated 1783 he left twenty pounds  to be invested.  The interest was to be paid to six poor widows at Christmas time each year.  Instead of twenty, only twelve pounds six shillings was paid because the funds were insufficient to pay it all.  However, money was duly distributed each year to the poor widows.  The last time it was paid was in 1934, and known as Kellaway's Dole.

I am reminded of my own Grandmother who each Christmas distributed many baskets of food and gifts to the poor and needy in our small town.  She did this for years  taking the items from my Grandfather's General store..

I can imagine that our present day C/K's will be doing the same sort of thing in 2002. I wish all our CFA members a Merry Christmas and  look forward to a productive and Happy New Year.

EDWARD H. NABB RESEARCH CENTRE

Andrea Callaway ( andiegc at aol.com ) of Washington, DC has sent us the following item:

Genealogy research in the DelMarVa region is benefitting greatly from the Edward H. Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture at Salisbury University.  As we already know of the presence of early Callaways in this region, it is of special interest to us.

They have a fast growing collection of research materials and are involved in a number of projects.  One of particular interest is deciphering old land records, and with the help of students studying Geographic Information Systems, are plotting the approximate locations on current maps.  Their plan is to have this available on their website, where you would click on a family surname, and be shown the locations where those ancestors owned land.  It is an exciting project that will be a work in development for quite some time, but they hope to have a first version available in the near future.  Director, Rebecca F. Miller, says she can't show you the exact field, but they can probably get you within a couple hundred acres.  Exciting stuff!

Visit them online at http://nabbhistory.salisbury.edu or in person when in the area at 1101 Camden Avenue, Salisbury, MD  21801-6860.

JOSHUA S. CALLAWAY DEED

Carolyn Floyd Beck ( Cfjmbk at aol.com ) of McDonough, GA submitted the following information:

"This came to me as a member of the Genealogical Society of Henry and Clayton Counties, GA, Inc. Our headquarters is in McDonough, GA. You probably know that Joshua was one of the preachers. He was married three times. Each time a wife would die (probably in childbirth) he would immediately marry again. The first daughter of the next marriage would get the full name of the last wife. This is from an article about him in one of the Callaway Journals."

THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER

Here is another item of interest from Andrea Callaway, especially for those who attended the Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD in October.

"At the end of the show at Fort McHenry, there was a beautiful and moving rendition of The Star Spangled Banner being sung by a male choir.  I loved the music, and inquired at the Gift Shop if they had the CD.  They were currently sold out, but suggested that I contact the U.S. Naval Academy, as it was done by the U.S. Naval Academy Men's Glee Club.
Their web site: http://www.usna.edu/Music/mensglee.html
You can order a CD that has the same rendition -- it's the CD entitled "A Cappella" and is the first selection on the CD -- for $15 + $2 shipping.  Click the link for an order form.  They ship very quickly - because I already have mine!  It's a great CD, and a nice way to support some very talented young adults."

1880 US CENSUS

Ruth W. Kent ( eruth at swbell.net ) of Shawnee Mission, KS would like to pass on the following information which she received from another list she is on. She has found this site and search engine to be excellent.

"The LDS church just put up the 1880 US census at familysearch.org.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

or specifically for census searches only:

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp

I have used it many times since receiving this posting and it has helped me locate family in places that I would never have looked."

HUGH CALLOWAY

Don Kellaway ( quinte at attcanada.net ) of Belleville, Ontario, Canada has submitted the following item:

Hugh CALLOWAY: A reference in the Archives of Canada provides details of the contract signed 9 Aug, 1779 by Hugh Calloway at Cork for delivering goods to the British Forces at Quebec.  Hugh Calloway was the Master of the good ship "Mary" riding at anchor at Cork, Ireland on that date in 1779.  The Mary was loaded with hundreds of barrels and half barrels of food and other goods contacted to be delivered to his Majesty's Forces at Quebec.  The responsible Commissioner was Robert Gordon and the goods were supplied by Eirseys and Waggetts of Cork.

THE  TECHNOLOGIST  UPDATE - Russ Callaway ( r.callaway at juno.com )

The CFA Research Data CD program started out with a rocky beginning. After finally getting a 'good' data mix and a proven program to search the data, I purchased a new 40X CD burner to make the thousands of CD's that you wonderful people were going to order. Well, it turned out that the unit was defective and I did not know this until it finally totally stopped writing CD's and some of the early purchasers let me know about this.

After reinstalling the 8X CD burner I went back to slow motion with about 6 per hour. Unfortunately, I had mailed several (5 so far) of these to our members. After much confusion, I determined that the CD's were the problem and not the program, nor the users computers. SO, if you are having any problems getting the CFA CD to work, please let me know at r.callaway at juno.com and I will replace the problem CD by return mail.

We have shipped 55 CD's in the 2 months that it has been available.  Thanks for your help in this rocky start of a wonderful program for CFA data searching.

The CFA Research CDs are available from:

CREDIT CARDS AND THE CFA  - by Dr. Bruce Callaway  ( bruce at callaway.com.au )

Despite active discussions throughout the year, the Committee formulated to explore the use of credit cards for membership and memorabilia purchases was unable to reach any majority conclusion.

Initially the committee was proposed to facilitate new membership for the increasing number of persons accessing the CFA website and expanding genealogical links and also to streamline renewals. Chaired by Bulletin Editor and Director Bill Callaway and comprising Treasurer Heide Callaway, Secretary Judy Ostler, former Assistant Secretary Martha Winkler and incoming assistant Secretary Rusty Callaway, the committee was unable to reach agreement.

Whilst this may present as a disappointment to the many members who supported the concept, it is fair to say that the CFA depends upon but a few dedicated persons who are willing to devote their spare time to the running of the association, many of whom have been present since its inception. Movement into a new era means demolishing some tried and proven techniques.

Members of any association can be demanding and without thought for those who ‘do the work’. Change often means more work. To paraphrase a brilliant quotation from a past President of the U.S. “Ask not what the association can do for you, but what you can do for the association”.

BULLETIN BILL'S FINAL BLURB

After nearly three years of working on the CFANET Bulletin I have decided to "retire". Luckily, our request in last month's Bulletin for someone to replace the Co-Editors (Bruce Callaway and myself) did not fall on deaf ears.

We are very pleased to announce that our CFA Webmaster, Donna Morgan, has generously offered to take over as Editor of the Bulletin, commencing with the January 2003 issue. Donna thrives on challenges and I know that she will bring a fresh approach to the job that will make the Bulletin even more useful to the CFA. Bruce and I will give her all the help she needs in the transition period.

But the assistance of all the Board of Directors and help from the members is vital to the success of this e-newsletter. I wish to thank all those people who have contributed articles and news items for the last 30+ issues. We will miss the many personal contacts made during that time, but not the stress of meeting monthly deadlines.

May we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
