The Family Genealogist - a Rare Breed

I would like to thank CFA Member, Lavinia Koot for sending us a copy of the Beatitudes of a Family Genealogist. No matter how disinterested they seem now, never stop encouraging the younger members of your family to take an interest in their heritage. It is after all, a roadmap of their existence.

GENEALOGY --- BEATITUDES OF A FAMILY GENEALOGIST

Blessed are the great-grandmothers, who hoarded newspaper clippings and old letters, for they tell the story of their time.

Blessed are all grandfathers who filed every legal document, for they provided the proof.

Blessed are the grandmothers who preserved family Bibles and diaries, for they preserved our heritage.

Blessed are fathers who elect officials that answer letters of inquiry, for some, they are the only link to the past.

Blessed are mothers who relate family traditions and legends to the family, for one of her children will surely remember.

Blessed are the relatives who fill in family sheets with extra data, to them we owe the family history.

Blessed is any family whose members strive for the preservation of records, for theirs is a labour of love.

Blessed are the children who will never say, "Grandma, you have told that old story twice today."

Blessed are the computer operators, for surely they will eventually come up with a match.

Another Random Act of Kindness posted on the Ancestry.com message board -

I believe this A. J. Callaway is actually Andrew Jackson Callaway from the following line of descent:
Peter Callaway
John Callaway
John Callaway, Jr. & Keziah Wilder
John Callaway
Thomas Callaway
John D. Callaway
Jonathan Hosea Callaway & Martha Jane Jones
Andrew Jackson Callaway

I am transcribing the Evergreen Cemetery in Ontario, Malheur Co., Oregon and thought I would post pictures of the Pre-1900 headstones for those interested in having them. This is a very large cemetery, there is a possibility there could be other family members buried here after this time period. If you are interested in them, I can look for them specifically.

Congratulations to Nancy Lawrence, for identifying the "Mystery Callaway", Samuel Ewell Callaway from the Oct 2006 newsletter! Nancy has been inducted into the CFA Hall of Fame.

This family line of descent is as follows:
Peter Callaway
John Callaway
Edward Callaway
John Callaway
Isaac Callaway
James & John Callaway

Donna-
Hi! I am replying to the query about the Mystery Callaway: Samuel Ewell Callaway in the Oct. newsletter.

James CALLAWAY, born about 1818 in Ga. was the brother of my ancestor: John CALLAWAY, b. about 1812 in GA.  John  moved to Bradley Co. AR by the census of 1860. The father of James and John was Isaac b. abt. 1785 in Wilkes County, GA.

I have looked back over my notes on James. There were 2 James Callaways in Bradley, and both were married to Marthas. The first James was born in 1818, and was in ARK by the 1850 census, and had a child in ARK in 1844. He lived in Union County, Franklin twp. Also there were Levi and Laurence Callaway - brothers of James. Lawrence and Levi had their first children in AR in 1843 and 1846. I think that I decided that because of time and proximity, the James born in 1818 was the correct brother. Also, I found evidence of a number of these Callaways, including My ancestor John, b. 1812 ending up in Limestone Co. TX. James's widow went there after he died, with her youngest son, and an older son was already there. Anyway, that is the evidence I could find tonight, and I might have had other reasons for my choice of the James of 1818!! The other James did not show up on the census in AR. until 1860 and though he may have been related, it seemed more probable that the one who arrived with the others was the right one.

I submitted the rest of that line that I knew in the Callaway newsletter, and it was posted at the CALLAWAY website. I am so excited to find out what happened to that part of the family.

I would like to thank Nancy Nolan for sharing information about her Callaway ancestors. Her information will be incorporated into the master Peter Callaway file at RootsWeb. Nancy descends from Jerry Miah Callaway and we have determined that the line of descent is as follows:

Hello Donna,
Thank you so much. I am getting the newsletter by e-mail.  My husband and I are the Genealogists for the Descendants of Valentine Hollingsworth Asso. and we've been doing this for a long time and loving it.

In my Callaway line there were three sons, Jerry Miah (This is correct, not Jeremiah), Albert C. (died after March 1942 perhaps in Baca County, CO.) and George. There were 4 daughters, Hattie, Myrtle, Darengia and Nettie.

Jerry Miah was born April 15, 1860in IL and died Feb 15, 1932 in Pritchet, Baca County, CO. He is buried in Elm Grove Cem., Seiling, Dewey County, OK. He lived in Bishop Twp., OK and CO and KS. He was a cattle driver and farmer. He married 1st Rosa Huffman before 1884 born in TX and died 1884 in Deep Water, MO. They had two children, Luman Callaway born Nov. 20, 1887 in Springfield, Baca County, CO, died Feb. 3, 1955 in Yakima, Yakima County, WA. He married 1st Harriet E. "Hattie" Lanphier born Dec. 9, 1888 in Dade County, MO and died Feb. 12, 1938 in Outlook, Yakima County, WA. She was the daughter of Sando and Emily Lanphier, who both died in WI. Luman married 2nd Alta Merle (Hollingsworth) Dosser Aug. 18, 1945 in Outlook, Yakima County, WA. Alta was my maternal grandmother. Luman had one sister, Leona May Callaway born 1884 in MO. She is thought to have married a Maylen and had one daughter, Eva born before 1932.

Jerry Miah married 2nd Irene Florelda Caroline Lytle. She had been married to William Johnson Hillibran and had 8 children with him. She married Jerry Miah on Sep. 29, 1909 in Chester, OK. They had 6 children, Rosa D. 1911, Albert Theodore, 1913, Emma, Jake and Josh and unknown infant. Rosa married an Eskew and Emma married a Coder.

I would love to learn anything about any of these people.
Blessings, Nancy Nolan

Other C/K Lines
Thank you to CFA Genealogist, Sherrill Williams, for the nice compliment and all the following Dorset records.

Donna, great newsletter. Enjoyed every bit of it. I was curious about the man of the Canadian obituary sent by Don Kellaway. I delved into my huge collection of Dorset notes and found the attached. It does not answer anyone's question, but mine - and probably Warwick's. Anyway, I thought it would be nice to follow up on the man's family.

I would like to thank Lesley Haigh for sending me this Kellaway family file. I'm always so pleased when we add information about our C/Ks from the UK to our web site. The file has been added to our C/K Family Tree Collection on RootsWeb.

Hi Everyone,
David and I think it's about time this Black Torrington, Devon tree got put online somewhere so that other researchers can see it and tack on their own extra bits, add more information or just find their link in.

I know of at least six others who could perhaps add a few generations to this tree and there are probably more around. As you see it's quite a large group who were around from 1630s. I'm sure it's not perfect, there will be errors (I hope corrections can be added in later) but it's the best I can do for the moment. David has contributed a huge amount, and has helped with checking.
Regards
Lesley

I would like to thank Don Kellaway for sending me the link to the autobiography of Alec Kellaway. It is entitled, "I was There! Where? - Thoughts on the Royal Navy (The Naval Autobiography of Alec Kellaway)."

This article, presented in 8 chapters plus an introduction, is the naval autobiography of Alec Kellaway. Alec served in the Royal Navy from January 1936 to November 1947. His story shows what life was like training for the Navy immediately before the war as well as service in a wide variety of ships during the conflict. The book was written by Alec himself and has previously been published on the HMS Hood Association web site (www.hmshood.com) and in the HMS Cossack Association newsletters.

The link to the article is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/ww2peopleswar/stories/70/a8402870.shtml

I would like to thank Rose Hallings for contacting me with additional information about Mary Elizabeth Kellaway. Information about her family line (Philip Thomas Kellaway of Port Hope, Ontario, Canada) was submitted by Don Kellaway and appears in the CFA Oct 2003 newsletter.

Donna,

What a beautiful newsletter!

I have some information to share with you. Forgive me if the information is already known.
Bart Hallings was indeed married to Mary E. (Kellaway) Sabine.
It was Bart's second marriage. His first wife died Dec. 3, 1901, age 56 years. Her name was Nellie Schulick. He then married Mary E. Sabine on April 17, 1903 in Rochester, N.Y.
Mary drew a widow's Civil War pension from Crittenden E. Sabine (looks like certif # 490538). Then a pension from Bart Hallings after his death on Dec.20, 1909. She applied for Bart's pension on Dec.27,1909. Margaret Kellaway residence at Rochester, N.Y. witnessed the application. On Dec.4, 1928, she was dropped from the roll because of death. Mary and Bart lived in the suburb of Brighton, Monroe County, N.Y.
I know all this information because Bart Hallings was my great-grandfather. My sources are Bart's nephew (while he was alive), Bart's Civil War Pension file (copy of), Mount Hope Cemetery Records and the family burial plot- Rochester, N.Y., Office of Vital Records, Rochester, N. Y. ( Transcript from the Register of Death).
When I get time, I will look for some information on Margaret and census information for Mary & Bart. I do not believe they had children as the newphew said no when I asked him many years ago. I will check.
I hope this helps you in some way.
Take care and hope to hear from you.
Rose.

I would like to thank Bill Piper for visiting the Dowland Church and taking some wonderful photos there which can be viewed on his web site.

I managed to get into Dowland church by borrowing the keys on Sunday morning. (Service was not till 3 p.m.) It's a plain little stone church, with parts that are very old.

Each pew end is carved, differently, though only one had a CoA. It was reasonably dark so the photos I took aren't marvelous, but have a look. I'll leave it to you to interpret the lettering.

Crudely carved above is the date MDXLVI. I'm a little confused by the X before the L, but I guess it's 1546. Do you all agree? There is no clear evidence that the carvings were made at that time, but we must assume it, I suppose.

There are also four floor stones to the Stafford family, one bearing our CoA. Each has unused space for additions. Can anyone interpret the lettering above Thomas Stafforde? gent? grut?

Note also the stained glass CoAs from Dolton; the pears look more like garlics! Also the plaque: his wife outlived him by over 50 years. It's all Stafford of course, with spelling "errors". Cheeky fellow, nicking our CoA when he changed his name!

The photos are on http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/kellawayhouse/dowland.htm.

They are big enough to be downloaded, and to be a little slow to display. I took more on film, so if there are any improvements I'll add those later.
More later.

Query # 382
Subject – Capt. William Perry Callaway
Submitter - Ann Porter, Santa Fe, NM
email - dporter8912 at msn.com

I am looking for information about William P. Callaway, a Captain in the California Volunteers in the Civil War. He was stationed for awhile at Fort Sumner, New Mexico and mustered out in 1864 at Fort Union, NM. He directed work of the Navajo farms at Ft. Sumner.

Thank you to Sherrill Williams, CFA Genealogist, for the following information about Capt. William Perry Callaway. There is also a picture of him on the CFA web site at: http://www.callawayfamily.org/gallery.htm

Donna, there is quite a good write-up on William Perry Callaway in the 1983 CFA Journal, I believe the one following our San Diego meeting. A descendant read his paper on this man at that meeting. I remember working with him on preparing it, but he had a great deal of information about William P. Callaway. Interesting story. My conclusion was, at the time, that William Perry Callaway was a descendant of Caleb Callaway (Col. Richard Callaway's son). Caleb joined the Shaker sect and settled in western Kentucky. I believe that Caleb married a granddaughter of Col. William Callaway (of Bedford Co, VA), but memory dims.

Response to Query # 376 (Oct 2006 CFANet)
Subject - Tabitha Callaway
Submitter - Sandie Grassino
email - HaloAct at aol.com

Donna,
In the query section of the Oct. newsletter, a woman is trying to trace her lineage for entrance to DAR back through Tabitha.  Pat Schnurr mentioned several very useful references to past Callaway information.  She didn't, however, mention that - in addition to Flanders Callaway and Daniel Boone,  Jemima Boone Callaway is also a recognized PATRIOT  for inclusion in DAR.  So, it seems that this Callaway has a HAT TRICK right off the bat with three patriots!

Query # 384
Subject -
John Francis Marion Callaway
Submitter - Robert Daniell
email - roloda at knology.net

Hi, Donna.
Still in the hunt, but nothing new on the marriage of Lousia Constanza DANIELL, widow of Henry W. POSEY, to John Francis Marion CALLAWAY.  Anything about this couple before being found in the 1880 census in Baldwin County, GA would be new and appreciated.

This find at the library yesterday eliminates Louisa, the wife of Joel T. CALLAWAY in the 1860 census of Bibb County as possibly being Louisa C. DANIELL:

"Feb 4, 1857 Married in this city on the 2nd inst. Baptist Church, by the Rev. Mr. LANDRUM, Mr. Joel T. CALLAWAY to Miss Louisa ELLIS."
(Source: Marriages and Obituaries from the Macon Messenger 1818-1865, p. 497, Willard R. Rocker, Southern Historical Press, Inc., 1988 Easley, SC 29641, ISBN 0-89308-340-2)

Hope this is useful to you.
