Volume I  No. 10

BULLETIN BILL'S BLURB   Cary Moore gave me this nickname, so I think I will use it. Now that the Halloween tricking and treating is over for another year, we can get down to business and try to beat the deadline for publishing this Bulletin.   My wife, Rosemary, and I have just returned from the Annual Meeting at Callaway Gardens after spending an extra 2 weeks exploring Georgia and the Carolinas. Wonderful scenery and beautiful weather, together with friendly people, greeted us wherever we went. These trips to CFA meetings are becoming yearly treasured events, and we heartily recommend them.   One of the days was spent in Concord, NC visiting with Russ and Heide Callaway, who had been to our place in Parksville, B.C., in September. They are both very talented artisans - Heide in painting and ceramics, and Russ in wood carving of birds. Their lovely home is the only one I have ever seen which has a den with four (4) computers in it. Amazing!   Rather than me try to give you highlights of the 25th Anniversary Meeting, which was so capably organized by Victor Calloway and assisted by many of his clan, it is hoped that a report will be forthcoming from the Meeting Coordinator himself, describing the interesting events that took place over the span of three days and nights, October 12 - 15. The facilities at Callaway Gardens were first class, all the way from meals to accommodations to meeting space. And the Gardens themselves, of course, were magnificent.   Apart from the opening and closing ceremonies, banquets and entertainment, plus a full day of tours, which were enjoyed by all participants, the Board of Directors met on Thursday afternoon to fine-tune the reports to be made at the Annual Business Meeting on the Saturday morning. The Minutes of those meetings are not yet available, but the topics covered were:
Treasurer's Report  Heide Callaway
Secretary's Report and Member Services  Judy Ostler
Amendments to By-laws Gene Callaway
25th Anniversary Medal Carole Romano
Memorabilia Waldo Callaway
CFA Brochure Cary Moore
Journal and Mauldin Plaque Ben Callaway
STAR Members Nancy Russell
State Meetings Carole Romano
"Descendents of Peter & Joseph Callaway" Sherrill Williams
Technology and the CFA Russell Callaway
English Research  Sherrill Williams and Cary Moore
Nominating Committee Hugh Port Callaway
Details of these items will be reported later, when the Minutes have been circulated by the Recording Secretary. However, some of the reports were written, so key points can be given now. Re Finances, the Association spent more ($17,601) than it brought in ($15,788) for a deficit of $1,813 for the first 9 months of 2000. The total funds on deposit still amount to $38,884.86 though. It is interesting to note that the cost of publishing the Journal is almost equal to the amount of dues received. Sales of Journals, Census and Memorabilia amounted to $1546.   The 2000 Membership Report, as of Oct.10, shows 635 members (551 contacts + 84 joint). There are 410 Active members, 152 Joint members, 22 Supporting members, and 51 Lifers. Analyzing membership by states reveals that about 45% of the members come from only 4 states - Georgia (97), Texas (88), Florida (51) & California (46).   Three outgoing Directors, Don Dixon, Wanda Phillips and Mary Jo DuBois, were thanked for their fine contributions to the CFA Board. They were replaced by Gary Garnett, Kermit Bridges and Bill Callaway. All other Officers and Directors remain the same.

ENGLISH RESEARCH   As you know, Sherrill Williams and Cary Moore returned from their month long trip to England just a few weeks before the Annual Meeting. Cary kindly sent us two updates of their research efforts straight from England and these have already been passed on to you. It is hoped that we will be able to provide you later with a summary of their report which they presented on the Saturday afternoon.   A note just arrived from Cary giving HAPPY NEWS about Pat Schnurr, the 3rd member of the team. Pat was unable to make the journey to England this year due to treatment for cancer. Nor was she able to attend the meeting at Callaway Gardens. However, the recent biopsy report indicates no cancer now, and her joint aches and pains are completely gone. Right now she is on "cloud 9". Best wishes for continued recovery, Pat.   One of the offshoots of the English research has a personal twist to it. In 1999, while in the Somerset Record Office, Cary looked at the Guest Book and saw that a Kenneth John Calloway of Taunton, Somerset had been there, so she phoned him to make contact. Time did not permit a personal visit then, but this year Cary and Sherrill spent 4 interesting hours at his home, where he gave them a copy of all the research he has done on the Calloway / Callaway / Calway, etc. names in Somerset (40 pages in all). Cary kindly sent me copies as my own ancestors are from that County. It turns out that Ken's research has enabled me to go back another 4 generations to a Robert CALWAY/CALLAWAY baptized on 16 July 1678 at Monksilver, Somerset. I was so excited that I phoned Ken in England to thank him for all his work, and tentatively planned a meeting with him in Taunton next June. Thanks, Cary, for your thoughtfulness in keeping me in mind, amidst all your other work.

At the conclusion of the Genealogy Workshop, new Board member Gary Garnett conducted a very useful session for novices on how to use a computer, in the hope that more members will get on line. Gary's father, Bob, had his laptop computer set up as well, so that 2 of the audience were able to actually have a hands-on experience. Thanks, Gary and Bob, for presenting such an interesting session. Hopefully, more such events can be scheduled at future Annual Meetings.

STAR MEMBERSHIP   Details on how to become a STAR Member have just been posted on the CFA Web Site at www.callawayfamily.org . If you would like to download genealogy forms, you can click on the links provided. The forms are provided by the Ancestors TV program on PBS, and you can also visit their TV show Web Site. Connie Sherrill of Strong, AR is in charge of the STAR Membership program. If you have any questions, she can be e-mailed at cbs at cei.net .

INTERNATIONAL FOCUS   At the suggestion of Dr. Bruce Callaway of Sydney, Australia our President, Victoria Jennings, led a discussion at the Sunday morning Board meeting on the International Focus of CFA.    Sherrill Williams indicated that she now would like to concentrate on English research and put together all the English data that has been collected in the last 4 years. She also suggested that a section of the Journal be devoted to English research and that international members be invited to submit articles. Persons identified as potential contributors were: Bill Kellaway Piper (England), Douglas McWhirter (Canada) and Dr. Bruce Callaway (Australia). And there are probably others, too.   Bill Callaway suggested that the designation, "foreign members" be changed to "international members". Flags of other countries, in which there are CFA members, should be displayed at our Annual Meetings, along with the Stars and Stripes.   This topic undoubtedly will receive much more attention in the future, and the Bulletin would be pleased to publish your views and ideas. As always, your input is most welcome. Just send it to callawaybill at shaw.ca.

VIDEO TAPES OF ANNUAL MEETINGS   Each year since 1987 the happenings of the Annual Meetings are video taped in their entirety. William House of Huntsville, AL has been doing this onerous job in recent years and before him the task was performed by Dr. Hugh Port Callaway of Waverly, MO.   Copies of these tapes can be purchased from CFA for $20. Just use the Order Form found on our Web Site. Board meetings are not video taped, but our Recording Secretary, Faye Garnett, has her trusty audio tape recorder in action all the time.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDAL   A beautiful Commemorative Medal for the Callaway Family Association's 25th Anniversary was created by Director Carole Romano of Castroville, TX. Each person attending the Annual Meeting was given one, attached to a ribbon, to wear throughout the meeting. A picture of this medal can be found on page 2 of Journal 2000.

IN MEMORIAM   After the Annual Meeting concluded on Sunday, October 15, Rosemary and I decided to drive around the local area of Pine Mountain, GA, partly with the intent of visiting Mountain Top Inn and Resort, owned by Larry Callaway. It was a shock, on arriving at the Inn and asking for him, to be told that he had died of a heart attack just a few weeks before.   We were able to chat with his ex-wife, who is trying to continue running the business, along with a son, David. Larry had been an Active Member of CFA since 1990. Our condolences are extended to the family.

A FUNNY STORY   To end this Bulletin on a happier note, let me narrate a story that Bruce Callaway's son, Peter, e-mailed him from England where he is living at the present time. The subject was: "New variation on our name". Pete's wife, Kris, teaches music at a school in London. "One of the little boys in her Year 2 class thinks she's the bees knees. He loves music, and absolutely loves his new teacher (Kris). Every afternoon he raves on to his mum about how much fun it is and how great Kris is. Unfortunately his mum was growing concerned about his new teacher, even though 'Mrs. Killer-Whale' was getting such glowing reports from her young boy. "Kris thought it was priceless. Makes a nice change to the usual spelling & pronunciation errors we get. Obviously that young boy spends too much time in front of the Discovery Channel, either that or he's got all 3 Free Willy movies on video."

Well, that's it for this Bulletin, although I have probably omitted some important items, which will have to be covered in Supplements in the not too distant future. Happy reading!   Bill Callaway, CFANET Coordinator Parksville, B.C., Canada   P.S. Don't forget to look at our Web Site: www.callawayfamily.org

CFANET e-NEWSLETTER
November  2000
Supplement

Here is a very important message from our CFA Genealogist, Sherrill Williams, regarding distributing responsibility for the US branches of the Callaway Family.
(As discussed at the October Board Meeting at Callaway Gardens.)

This is the "first" call for volunteers.

GENEALOGY COMMITTEE TO BE FORMED
The task of keeping track of CFA genealogical records is becoming huge. The recent project of putting member's family charts in the Family Tree Maker program further highlights the need for more assistance.  Thus, it has been determined to create a "Genealogy Committee" to assist in maintaining the US Callaway records.  We are seeking volunteers to help us out.  To keep this manageable, we have decided to break up the records into major family lines, and ask for volunteers to take responsibility for their own family line.  Each volunteer will receive the CFA family group sheets for their chosen family line.  These will be Xerox copies since the original family charts are sent to the CFA collection at the Troup County, GA Archives for safekeeping.  Also, the volunteers will receive copies of correspondence, documentary records and other  material relative to their family line. Volunteers should be current dues-paying members of CFA, Inc.  Among the duties and responsibilities of volunteers will be:

1.  To organize and maintain the data regarding their chosen line.
2.  To attempt to resolve the problem of "conflicting" information sometimes found on the CFA member's charts, in order to determine the most accurate information possible.
3.  To apply documentation, when available, to the data.
4.  To reply to queries and correspondence regarding their chosen family line.
5.  To generally maintain all the data on the chosen family line.

It will be helpful, but not necessary, for volunteers to own a computer and be "on-line."  For computer owners, it would also be of great assistance if you have the Family Tree Maker program, or are willing to install the program on your computer and learn to use it. There is always the possibility that more than one person will volunteer for a particular family line.  In that case, a sub-committee could be created, with one person in charge, to work together on maintaining that family line.  All material sent to volunteers will remain the property of The Callaway Family Association, Inc.  Should a volunteer become unable to continue the work of maintaining the records, all data should be returned to the CFA Genealogist, or passed to another selected volunteer.  We also request that no volunteer publish CFA owned material without prior approval from the CFA Genealogist and Board of Directors.  In order to make this project manageable, we have decided to break down the family lines in the following manner:

PETER CALLAWAY FAMILY:
A.  Wilkes County, Georgia family (sons of Edward Callaway)
      1.  Job Callaway, Sr.
      2.  John & Bethany Arnold Callaway
      3.  Isaac & Elizabeth Arnold Callaway, Sr. (of North Carolina)
      4.  Joseph & Sabrina Morgan Callaway
      5.  Joshua & Isabella G. Henderson Callaway
B.  Thomas & Nancy Hosea Callaway family (of Delaware, Georgia, Florida)
C.  Leven Callaway family (of Delaware and Georgia)
D.  Other Sussex Co, Delaware families
E.  Other Kent Co,  Delaware families

JOSEPH CALLAWAY FAMILY
A.  Capt. Thomas Callaway of Ashe Co, NC
B.  Col. William Callaway of Bedford Co, VA
C.  Francis Callaway, Sr. of North Carolina and Georgia
D.  Col. Richard Callaway of Virginia and Kentucky
E.  James ("the pioneer") & Sarah [Bramlett] Callaway

There are other, as yet, unattached branches of the Callaway family.  If there are others aside from those mentioned below, please remind us and volunteer to help.

UNATTACHED "MYSTERY CALLAWAY" FAMILIES
A.  Caleb Calloway of North Carolina
B.  John & Jane Pyle Callaway of Georgia
