We were very sorry to hear about the death of CFA Member, Betty Silvey's Mother, Martha Williams Draime. Our condolences go to Betty and all her family.

Donna,
My Mother, Martha Williams Draime, died Monday, 27th July 2009 at the age of 93 yrs, 5 mo, 21 days.   Am sending pictures and her obit.  First picture was about 1938/9 and second one a few years ago.

She lived a good life and her mind was sharp right up to the end.  She had had an aneurysm for a number of years.  It did not rupture, but dissected so death was not immediate, but within a couple of hours.  She died peacefully.

Through her and her father's cousins, Helen and Mable Matlock, and Florine McChesney, daughter of Minnie Callaway McChesney, I came into many old letters written during the Mexican War, Civil War, and WWI and II as well as pictures of the Matlocks, Callaways, McChesneys and related families which she had looked for when she knew I was starting my genealogy search.  Only one of the early pictures, a Civil War picture of Clinton DeWitt Callaway, had a name, the others I believe I have put names to just by research and which family they came from.  She had taken care of Florine McChesney Dawson as well as Helen and Mable Matlock and had inherited
the contents of their respective homes.  The latest pictures she had come across, and I received from her in May, I believe were of her ggrandparents Edwin H. and
Matilda Matlock Callaway taken early 1850's as well as one of her ggGrandfather George Matlock, Matilda' s father.  It happened to be a broach pin that looked to be the same one that his wife, Margaret McKirgan Matlock, was wearing in a picture that my cousin has of her.  She was fascinated that I had come up with so much of our history as her father had died of Typhoid fever when she was less than two years old and her Grandparents had died while she was a child.  Her Mother would not tell her or did not know of the Callaway history.  I am fortunate that she had kept them even tho she had no idea of who they were except for the ones she had personally met before they died.

Editor's Note - On Aug 15, 2009 this very nice article appeared in the paper about Herschel.

Orlando Sentinel

Sentinel Staff Writer

Herschel H. Parrish Jr.'s life was rooted in Florida farmland

Herschel Hooper Parrish Jr. was always interested in the issues that affected his community, said his wife of 44 years, Sandra Beck Parrish. And for several decades, that community was rooted in Florida agriculture.

"He was a strongly opinionated man," she said. "He was knowledgeable about politics. You never wondered where he was coming from. ... He was never timid about expressing himself."

Parrish, who was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, died at his home in Winter Garden on Tuesday. He was 72.

Born in St. Augustine, Parrish attended Princeton Elementary and graduated from Boone High School in 1955. He earned a bachelor's degree in animal science and nutrition from the University of Florida in 1959 and was an active member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

"He was an avid Gator sports fan, especially football," his wife said. "He had the same seats at the Swamp stadium that had been in his family since the 1930s."

After college, Parrish enlisted in the Marine Corps and was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant. At the end of his three years of service, he was ranked as captain.

Parrish returned to St. Augustine in 1962 to work as a cattle rancher, managing Wolfe Ranch for 22 years. His professional affiliations included the Florida Cattleman's Association and the 4-H Foundation, which he served in several capacities. He also was elected president of the board of directors for Florida's chapter of what was then known as Future Farmers of America. After serving three terms, he received its highest award: an Honorary FFA Degree.

For 12 years, while in St. Augustine, Parrish sat on the St. Johns County School Board. He was also an active Shriner and a Mason.

In 1959, when Parrish's father, Herschel H. Parrish, began managing the Central Florida Fair in Orlando, Parrish became involved in running the cattle show, traveling from St. Augustine to help his father with the livestock.

It was that involvement that made him the ideal choice to succeed his father as CEO when he stepped down in 1984, Sandra Parrish said.

During his 14-year tenure, Parrish became a Certified Fair Executive, a member of the Fair Association and was elected president of the Florida Federation of Fairs.

In 1990, Orlando then-Mayor Bill Frederick signed a proclamation declaring that March 1-11, which was the 78th anniversary of the fair, would be observed in recognition of Parrish's commitment to improving the quality of living in the community.

His other community involvements included the University Club of Orlando and Kiwanis Club, both in St. Augustine and Orlando, which he served as president.

After retiring from the fair in 1998, Parrish began a career in the banking industry, working as vice president of business development for Bank of Central Florida. He later worked in that capacity for First National Bank of Florida, Fifth Third Bank, Century Bank and Seacoast National Bank. He retired in December 2007 after his health began to deteriorate.

In 2001, Parrish was appointed by Gov. Jeb Bush to serve on the board of trustees for the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. He was serving his third term at the time of his death.

Parrish and Sandra Beck married in 1965 and had three children. She described him as a man of high integrity, dignity and character who fought for the little guy.

A member of First Baptist Church of Winter Garden, Parrish was very concerned about where people stood in their relationship to Jesus, his wife said.

Parrish also is survived by one sister, Sylvia Parrish Costin of Port St. Joe; two daughters, Stephanie Pelt of Bremen, Ga., and Shannen Mohr of Tallahassee; one son, Todd Parrish of Winter Garden; and four grandchildren.

Woodlawn Funeral Home, Gotha, is handling arrangements.

The Calloway Canal

I would like to thank Marcella Cagle for sending us this picture of the Calloway Canal. It was featured in an article in the June 2009 Newsletter.

The Calloway Canal

Hi Donna,
I was delighted and surprised to read the submission  in the June Newsletter by Bill Piper about the irrigation engineer, O.P. Calloway, who worked on the Calloway Canal here in my hometown of Bakersfield, California, back in the 1880's.   I have lived here 30 years and always wondered if my family had anything to do with the building of the canal.  Now I know. Thank you, Bill Piper.

I thought this picture might also be of interest to you.  It was published in the local newspaper  (Bakersfield Californian) addition titled "Bakersfield Life", historical section,  in June 2008.  As you will note, it made no mention of O.P. Calloway, and I wondered why it was called the Calloway Canal, so when I saw the article in the CFA  June 2009 newsletter, it answered my question.

U. S. Joseph Callaway Line

I would like to thank Pat Schnurr for identifying Martha Callaway, one of the "Mystery Callaways" from last month's newsletter.

Donna -- this is her line ( Joseph, Col. Wm., Capt. Charles, Mary (Polly) b. 17 Oct. 1779 in Bedford Co. Va. died Feb/Mar. 1817 Pittsylvania Co., Va. Martha Anne Callaway who m. Abram Clement, Atty. at Law) Marriage Notices from Richmond, Va. Newspapers 1821-1840 published by Va. Gen. Soc. No. 10" - Married on 23rd Ult. by Rev. Charles Callaway, (this was my Gr-Gr-Grandfather who was a Methodist Minister.)
Abraham Clements, Sr. to Miss Ann Callaway, all of Pittsylvania Co. RW Oct. 12, 1829 p. 3..
"Marriages of Pitts. Co. Va. 1806-1830 says "Abram Clements m. Martha Anne Callaway same date.

Mary Callaway's will - Pitts. Co. V. Deeds and Will Book 11 - (1780-1820) p. 156,157.  This is published in 1978 Callaway Family Association Journal on Page 63.   "I give to my dau. Martha Anne all the residue of my estate to be enjoyed by her forever" - it was signed by Charles Callaway, Sr. and Jr. and James Callaway. on March 17, 1817 Charles Callaway, Jr. was appt'd executor of the will and posted bond. Charles, Jr. was two years younger than Mary he was b. 1781.

Capt. Charles Callaway also mentions Martha Anne in his will calling her his Granddaughter.
He died after his dau. Mary in July of 1827 two years before the marriage of Martha Anne.

The Court Orders of Pittsv. Co., Va. show many references to Martha Anne in connection with the settlement of the estate of Capt. Charles Callaway, Sr.
May 18, 1825 Charles Callaway, Jr. ordered to settle estate of Mary (Polly) Callaway
July 26, 1826 Francis Callaway qualified as guardian of Martha Anne Callaway
Feb. Ct. 1830 - Charles Callaway not being accepted by Abrahm Clement who intermarried with Martha Callaway d/o of Mary Callaway deceased.
Nov. 24, 1831 - Abram Clement vs. Charles Callaway on behalf of Martha Callaway Clement
Feb. 5, 1836 - Charles Callaway ordered to settle estate of Polly Callaway

Capt. Charles in his will had listed the last born six children who were to pay $100.00 ea. out of their portion of his estate to Martha Anne. The other children had previously received their share.

We have not been able to locate a marriage license for Mary Callaway.  Bobbie Callaway and I worked on this years ago.  We finally decided that she was never married or m. briefly to a Callaway cousin - this was not unusual.  We found no evidence to show that Mary (Polly) Callaway had more than the one child.

I would like to thank CFA Member Gene Lierheimer for sharing his new Callaway family connection. Gene made a connection on Ancestry.com to someone who also descended from Edmund Callaway. Now we have additional information about descendants for this following line of descent.
Joseph Callaway
James Callaway
Edmund Callaway
Mary Ann Callaway

Don,
This is a very interesting new project for me.  Before this I had nothing concerning what had happened to Susan Virginia Payne.

Your information fits together with mine quite well.  I had found Susan Virginia (as Virginia) living with Mary Ann in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois in 1850.  By that time Mary Ann Callaway Payne O'Bannon had apparently been widowed a second time by the death of her second husband.  She was living with her son Jilson Payne--and near her brothers Samuel Taylor Callaway and William Dudley Callaway (my gggrandfather).  I found an 1870 Census record showing a Prettyman Knowles (apparently temporarily staying with a Knowles relative) in Jacksonville, Illinois as a cattle broker--after he and his family had moved to Kansas.

By the way "Callaway" rather than "Calloway" is the correct spelling for this line.  The "o" for "a" substitution was common in earlier days.

As an aside, Mary Ann's son Milton Jameson Payne, was mayor of Kansas City, Missouri for several terms and was a Colonel in the Confederate Army.  Son James Edward was a Captain in the Confederate Army, a newspaper editor, served as an officer in the U.S. Army in the Spanish-American War and was a ranking official for years with the U.S. Census Bureau.  William was a Kansas City businessman.  Jilson was a prosperous Illinois farmer.  Mary Ann died in Jackson County, Missouri near three of her sons.

The Callaway Family Association (see callawayfamily.org for descendants of Joseph Callaway of Virginia) has well documented records covering Edmund Callaway, et al.
Gene Lierheimer

Dear Mr. Lierheimer,
I just learned in the past few days that I, like you, am a direct descendant of Edmund Calloway. Here is my lineage:

Edmund Calloway
Mary Ann Calloway (spouse: Edward Bradford Payne)
Susan Virginia Payne (spouse: Prettyman Knowles)
Elizabeth Ann Knowles (spouse: John Higgins Campton)
Joseph Edward Campton (spouse: Zella Mary Connick)

My family tree is documented as the "Donald E. Campton Jr." tree on Ancestry.com. I have documented most of my genealogy details and relatives up through my great great grandmother, Susan Virgina "Ginnie" Knowles.

I recently discovered my presumed connection to Mary Ann Calloway when I obtained the death certificate of Susan Virginia [Payne] Knowles. "Mary Calloway" was listed as the maiden name of her mother and "Bradford Payne" was listed as her father. From there, I discovered your tree on Ancestry.com.

Any help you can provide me with documenting my "Calloway" lineage leading to Mary Ann Calloway and Susan Virginia Payne would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely yours,
Don Campton

The following is an article written in 1987 and published in the CFA Journal that year. There are still questions regarding the actual children of this couple. They are from the following line of descent:
Joseph Callaway
James Callaway
William Callaway

Who Are the Children of William & Milly Callaway?
by Bobbie Callaway 1987

William Callaway (son of James and Sarah Bramblett Callaway married in Clark Co., KY on 5 January 1802. Milly was the daughter of Achilles & Mary/Polly Bush Eubank. William died ca. June 1813 in Clark Co., KY and his widow married secondly John Callaway. (Editor's Note - John Callaway was the nephew of her first husband, William Callaway.)

William Callaway is shown in the 1980 Callaway Journal, pages 68 and 80 as the son of James Callaway, Jr. However, further research brings doubt that he belongs in this family. In the letter John Callaway wrote in 1840, He writes, "Uncle William's children all live here." Was he referring to the children of William and Milly? The 1980 Callaway Journal does not show a William, son of James Callaway, Sr. in the family chart. John also wrote, "All my brothers and sisters are in this State but one, she lives in Bourbon Co., KY." A DAR record of Mrs. Mattie Harrison Cochran, who was born after 1866, says her mother was Mary E. Callaway Harrison and her grandparents were William and Milly Eubanks Callaway.  This record says William was b. 1786, son of James Callaway, Jr. The DAR was not formed until 1890 (35 years after the death of Mary Callaway Harrison). The only other indication this researcher has found to claim William as the son of James Callaway, Jr. was in the book, Revolutionary War Soldiers Buried in Missouri, page 43. This book had an error on the birth year of two other children of James Callaway, Jr. Official papers obtained from the archives pertaining to the Revolutionary War record of James Callaway, Jr., names his children, including his daughter, Sally, who was no longer living as was noted on the paper. Surely if William had been a son of James Callaway, Jr., he too, would have been mentioned.

The names of the children of William and Milly Callaway have not been proved, but they probably had five or six children in the 11 1/2 years they were married.

It seems fairly certain that one of their children was Sarah Mariah Callaway (b. 1811, Clark Co., KY; married 20 Oct 1843, Cooper Co., MO, John Thomas Ware, who was probably the son of Presley and America Corbin Ware.) Sarah Mariah and John Thomas Ware set out for Oregon with Charles Callaway in 1852 and Thomas Ware died 26 May 1852, 20 miles west of Fort Kearney, Nebraska along the Oregon Trail. Sarah Mariah and her children went on to Oregon and settled in Lane Co., OR, near Charles Callaway and his family. Her Children were: Sidney Coanza Ware b. 1845 MO; m. 17 Mar. 1861 Caleb Woodward & had 7 children, Robert B. Ware b. 1849 MO, Stephen B. Ware b. 1849, Mary Ann Ware b. Aug. 1850 MO; d. 5 Oct 1930 Lane Co., OR; m. 4 Jan. 1865 Andrew J. Carson & had 6 children. (Death certificate of Mary Ann Ware Carson says her mother was Maria Callaway.) In the 1860 Lane Co., OR census, a male shown as A. Ware, age 20, born MO is with Sarah Mariah Ware and her family. Relation of A. Ware to the rest of the family is unknown by this researcher.

Another child was probably Mary E. Callaway (1809-1855) who married 1827 Cosby Berryman Cochran. According to DAR records Mary E. died when her son, William Henry Harrison was about 13 years old and another record shows Milly Eubanks Callaway died 1843.

Another child might be Stephen E. (Eubanks?) Callaway, who died at age 46 on 28 July 1853 in Howard Co., MO. He married 2 May 1836 Mary Ann Reynolds in Howard Co. He was not a son of James Callaway, Jr., as James, Jr. had a son Stephen White Callaway b. 1838 in MO.

If Sidney C. Callaway (married 10 Nov 1842 Cooper Co., MO, Robert Douglas Paxton) was a dau. of William and Milly Callaway, she would have been at least 29 years old when she married. She may have been a dau. of John and Milly. However, one is reminded that Sarah Mariah Callaway Ware named a daughter Sidney Coanza.

Maybe there are some descendants of these people who can help solve this puzzle. If so, please contact us.

OBITUARY
DIED, on the 27th inst., in the 20th year of his age, of a pulmonary disease,
LANGDON CHEVES, son of Col. James Callaway, Franklin Cy., Va. The writer of this brief notice would record his many virtues but eulogy is vain; affection can pay but a poor tribute to his memory. The aching heart can feel how dearly he was beloved and the silent tear will tell his worth when language fails to do him justice. His amiable disposition and peculiar sweetness of temper, so characteristic in health, were remarkable till death. He bore his affliction with a patience and fortitude rarely witnessed. He has left a numerous train of relations and friends, to lament his early death.

Query # 540
Subject –
Joseph Adolphus Callaway from the Peter Callaway line
Submitter
- Gene Ruark

- Euru at aol.com

Good morning Donna,

I am a member of CFA and  my Callaway ancestry is:  Peter, John, Edward, Job, Joseph, Willis Reagan, Joseph Adolphus, Samuel, and his daughter Mary. Samuel, my grandfather (b 1859), was the eldest of fourteen children.  My interest is in finding out a little about my second cousins and their descendants.  Samuel was born in Lumpkin County, GA but I think all the other siblings were born in Alabama.  My grandfather worked for the L & N Railway and their children were born at various division points on the railroad.  My mother, Mary, was born in Birmingham in 1897.

My idea in joining the newsletter is that I might see some chatter among the descendants of Joseph Adolphus--since there were so many of them and living in one area (Montgomery).  I know almost nothing about the Callaways.  In fact, I never been to either Birmingham or Montgomery.

The names that I heard were Lee, Frank (Francis?) and Willis and, maybe, an aunt Pat (Patience?)  While Samuel had five children, there are only five, at most, surviving grandchildren.  We were in Ireland a few years ago and two of our fellow tour members were from Montgomery and had gone to school with Lee Callaway, III.  Lee Callaway (I) was married to Mamie Walter and friends of ours in St. Charles, IL are somehow related to her.  But they know nothing of the Callaways except having heard a few names.

My aunt Mildred was an early member of the CFA and possibly attended an annual meeting.  But she was very shy and wouldn't have likely made an impact.  She died in the early 1990s.  Samuel's brother Joseph had a son and grandson of the same name.  The grandson, who, I believe, was called Jody, graduated from Princeton.  His mother's name was Sibyl.  Joseph II worked for what was then called the Bureau of Standards.

That scrapes the barrel of my knowledge of contemporary Callaways.  There was one other relative of my mother's who worked in NY at W & J Sloane and possibly was later a house mother at the University of Texas.  But, I don't think she had a Callaway surname.

I'm happy to follow the newsletter for a few months to see if there are any posters before we reach out.

Thanks for your warm greeting and offer of assistance.
Gene

P.S.  I've done the DNA for the Y-chromosome.  On the Ruark side, a remote cousin has published a book with everyone, living or dead.  Unfortunately, no one seems to be able to bridge a long gap before 1750.  We know where they are but the crosses were wooden and have long since disintegrated.  Much speculation, but that's what it is, speculation.

Callaway Family Association:
My name is Earline Callaway Reese.  I’m in the very beginning stages of doing family research on our Callaway line.  So I’m a novice to say the least.  I found your web site quite by accident, and am pleased and interested in being a part of the CFA.

My father was Earl Callaway (no middle name), born in 1905 and raised in the small community of Schaal, Arkansas, in Howard County.  His parents were Jasper Callaway and Rosa Lee Young Callaway.  I have been trying to get more information on Jasper. I know he was born in March, of 1850, in Arkansas.  On the federal census of 1900 he listed his father and mother as being born in Georgia and Ireland, respectively.  He was 34 years older than my grandmother, and was widowed from two previous marriages which each produced 3 or 4 children.  My grandmother and he also had 3 children.  Jasper died when my dad was very young, so Dad did not pass on much information about his father or his grandparents to me or other family members.  My grandmother eventually remarried and moved to Texas and had additional children with her second husband.  From other census records, Jasper appears to have lived in Caddo, Louisiana, and Howard County, Arkansas, where Schaal was located.  Records also indicate some of his earlier children were born in Texas. I have been unable thus far to find a grave site for him, or even an accurate death date.  My dad did tell me that upon his father’s death, he recalled Jasper’s brothers coming from Tennessee for his funeral.  He also told me that at one point in his early years his name was spelled Calaway with one L, but that his dad changed the spelling by adding another L, to differ from another non-related family.  Indeed on earlier census records Jasper’s last name is spelled with one L.

My immediate family has been in Ellis & Navarro Counties of central Texas for all my life and since my bad came to Texas from Schaal, Arkansas as a young man.  My dad died in 1978 and is buried in Rice Cemetery, Navarro County, Texas. For additional information, please contact me.

Editor's Note - Please welcome Earline, who is a brand new member of CFA. In checking census records it may be possible that her family line descends from the Joseph Callaway line as follows below. Can anyone confirm or refute this ancestry?

HI DONNA,
THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR THOUGHFULNESS.  I WOULD LOVE TO BE ON YOUR NEWSLETTER.  I CAN ENLARGE THE PRINT ON MY COMPUTER AND I HAVE A CCTV FOR READING PAPER WORD.  AT THIS TIME I CAN STILL READ PAM'S PRINT.  I HAVE A LARGE MONITOR AND GET CLOSE TO THE SCREEN IF I HAVE REAL SMALL PRINT.
AS PAM TOLD YOU MY 3RD GREAT GRANDMOTHER  WAS SALLIE CALLAWAY FROM LITTLE CREEK HUND.  IN SUSSEX CO., DE.  I KNOW THEY LIVED IN THE DELMAR AREA.  THE BENJAMIN CALLAWAY YOU MENTION IN YOUR FILE WHO DIED IN 1814 COULD WELL BE HER FATHER.  SHE MARRIED JONATHON HASTING IN 1814 AND THEY SOLD THE LAND, CALLAWAY'S DESIRE IN 1817.

I HAVE ANOTHER CALLAWAY IN MY FAMILY, A JAMES WASHINGTON CALLAWAY, SON OF ELIHU CALLAWAY MARRIED MY GREAT GRAND AUNT JULIA HASTINGS. JAMES WAS  FROM  LITTLE CREEK  HUNDRED AND WAS BORN 1843.  HE WAS IN THE CIVIL WAR AND THE FAMILY STORY GOES THAT HE WAS PAID TO SERVE FOR SOMEONE ELSE BUT HE WAS IN THE PA UNIT.  HE LIVED TILL 1916.  HIS FATHER MIGHT WELL HAVE BEEN RELATED TO SALLIE.  ALL THE COUSINS SEEMED TO MARRY A LOT.

THANKS FOR REPLYING SO QUICKLY,
GOD BLESS YOU,
NORAH HASTINGS COLLINS

HI PAM,

MY JONATHON HASTINGS MARRIED SALLIE CALLAWAY FROM LITTLE CREEK HUNDRED IN 1814.  IN 1817 SHE AND JONATHON SOLD LAND SHE INHERITED FROM HER FATHER.  THE LAND WAS CALLAWAY'S DESIRE AND BEFORE THAT IT WAS PART OF CALLAWAY'S VENTURE.  I HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE YET TO FIND THE FATHER'S WILL, SO I WILL KNOW HIS NAME. SALLIE'S FATHER MAY BE BENJAMIN CALLAWAY.

Callaway plantation in Bosco, LA
Submitter - Vernon Landers
email - vll31 at flash.net

I'm trying to find out if a Callaway family had a plantation in Bosco, La in the late 1800's to 1970's. The families of Louis and Virginia Cain are trying to complete a family tree and unfortunately the details about these two individuals is very sketchy. The family states that Virginia lived on a plantation until her death and they are not sure if she remarried and changed her last name. The Cain's had a son by the name of Samuel Cain and he was born in 1902 in Monroe, La.

I have not seen any census reports reflecting the names of Louis and Virginia Cain. I'm hoping that each one of the plantations had a listing of each family that lived, worked and was raised on the plantation.

If you are aware of other plantations that were in this area please let me know. I've looked on your website and at quick glance did not see any reference to this Cain family.

Thanks,
Vernon Landers
