THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION
CFANET e-NEWSLETTER
 September 2000

Volume I  No. 8

FROM THE EDITOR

Another month has rolled around and we are nearly into fall (spring in Australia and New Zealand, where we have members, too). I would like to thank all of you who replied to my short questionnaire last month, giving me a number of suggestions for the Bulletin, several of which will be incorporated into this issue. One member suggested that I was just trying to find out how many people actually read to the end of the Bulletin. If that were the case, it can reported that there were 73 who did. Does that mean that over 200 didn't? I hope not. In any case, here goes with another issue. Comments, suggestions, etc. are welcome at any time at callawaybill at shaw.ca.

CHAT ROOM

Kermit Bridges, Chat Room Facilitator, advises that he will be "on the road" on Sunday, September 3, but the session will still take place as scheduled (10:00 PM Eastern Time). Just go to the CFA Website, www.callawayfamily.org and click on CHAT, then follow instructions.

STATE/REGIONAL ACTIVITIES

GEORGIA CALLAWAY PICNIC   Clay Callaway, Georgia State Chair, reports that:
"The Descendents of Southern Rights Callaway were privileged to host the FIRST annual Ga. Callaway Picnic on July 29, 2000 in Fayetteville, Ga. We sent out over a hundred invitations and were so pleased that 45 folks 'heeded the call' to visit their Callaway kin! Everyone brought their own Picnic lunch; Family photos and stories (ALL TRUE) were shared! Many attendees enjoyed searching census records for their lost ancestors, while others compared family trees. John Mauldin Sr, was on hand to sample some Rattlesnake watermelon; John Mauldin Jr. and family heard James Callaway's lecture, 'Everything you always Wanted to Know about Hog Killing - But were afraid to Ask'! A good time was had by All and after 4 hours of Fun, Food, and Fellowship; We unanimously agreed that all Callaway Ladies are Lovely, all Callaway Men are Wise, and all Callaway Children are Happy and Blessed."

COMMENTS OF STATE/REGIONAL CHAIR, Carole S. Romano, re Georgia Picnic:
"Dear Clay and Maria, ....."Hooray for Georgia!!!! Your wonderful efforts and enthusiasm paid off ! Didn't I tell you how much fun it would be? Can't even begin to thank you both for bringing the CFA Georgians together and was so pleased you had a grand turnout. It is wonderful that John Mauldin came and is planning to be at Callaway Gardens in October. Also, that John Jr. offered to encourage Bo Callaway to be there also. Please do ask John Jr. to encourage Bo to come since it is the 25th anniversary and we need everybody to make CFA as strong and viable as possible. Have heard nothing but wonderful things about him from his relatives. "Again, a million thanks for the effort you and Maria have made for CFA in Georgia. It is wonderful to have younger families involved to add zip to our association. Looking forward to being at Callaway Gardens in October to brag on you all, as well as Arkansas and the Dixons!"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------LOUISIANA REUNION   Connie Burns-Sherrill reports that:
"The day of our reunion was Aug. 6, 2000 in Farmerville, LA. A good pot luck lunch, entertainment, and fellowship was had by all 54 cousins. It was a HOT day!!!!!

ON THE MOVE

1. President Victoria Jennings is in China at this very moment (on a work assignment, I presume) and her first e-mail was sent from "a weird internet cafe on the second floor of a snake restaurant in Guilin, China." She is now on her way to Beijing. Her closing phrase was: "More later from the antipodes." (which, according to my Little Oxford Dictionary, means 'places diametrically opposite each other on the earth, esp. Australasia in relation to Europe').

2. Our traveling researchers, Sherrill Williams and Cary Moore arrived in England on August 28 and are staying in Wellington, Somerset until September 11 at a "lovely, quiet country hotel" . From there they will travel each day to the Somerset County Records Office in Taunton, a few miles away, to work with local genealogist Bernard Welchman. From September 11 - 20, Sherrill and Cary will be based in Winchester, Hampshire, and will finish up their research in Richmond, Surrey from September 20 - 26, before flying back to Atlanta, GA. They have a laptop computer with them and will be filing reports "when anything significant or interesting surfaces." These will be passed on to all CFANETers as special supplements to the Bulletin.

3. Lt. Col. William A. Moore, one of the 4 sons of Cary Moore, has moved from LaPlata, MD to Niceville, FL ( in the Fort Walton Beach area) with wife Holly and 3 children, Becca, Josh and Hannah. The Moore family was written up in Journal 2000, pages 35-38.

4. Rev. Guy Newland Jr., has moved from Mitchell, IN to Oklahoma to be closer to his children. Recalling visits to Callaway Gardens when his family was young, Guy hopes to return there for the 25th Annual Meeting in October.

5. Russ and Heide Callaway, our CFA 2nd Vice-President - Technologist and Treasurer respectively, will be traveling to British Columbia, Canada later this month for a train trip through the Canadian Rockies (the main course) and finishing up in Parksville, B.C. (the dessert) to visit with Bill Callaway (that's me) and Rosemary for a few days. While they are here, we may try to arrange a little get-together of Vancouver Island CFA members and prospective members. (Take note, Carole).

Having just played a fairly decent (for me) round of golf, I now feel recharged and ready to continue with this Bulletin. One of my playing buddies, Dr. Jack Dudley, scored a hole-in-one on the par 3 eighteenth hole, exactly one year to the day after his wife had done the same thing on the par 3 seventh hole. Cause for much celebration!

A GOLFING ADVENTURE STORY

Martha Winkler, our Assistant Secretary, recently related to me a very unusual and exciting experience, which she has agreed to let me share with you. "Played the par 3 course at the Sr. place today (our usual Sunday outing). Only 5 of us, so there was a 3-some and a 2-some, which included me, riding in my friend's cart. We were just approaching the fourth green when I told her I'd park the cart. It is a sort of raised green and a small hill to the side down to the next tee box, where our friends were, with a lake in front of it. "I parked the cart on the hill, in the shade, got out of the cart and walked to the green, and hear - O-O-O-H-H Martha! I turned around and there was the cart headed right towards the lake, over the rocks and into the water. It had 2 sets of clubs on it, plus a jacket and 2 ladies purses. "Well, it was the talk of the day there! I walked back to the club house to tell my story and they called Security, who then called the Maintenance man out, and about 3 hours later everything was on dry land and I was feeling like a complete idiot!!!! Of course our  cigarettes were in the cart, so our friends brought us iced tea and a cigarette when they finished. "THE MORAL OF THE STORY = BE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN THE BRAKE IS ENGAGED, AND IF ON A HILL MAKE SURE YOU TURN THE WHEELS SO THE CART WON'T ROLL INTO THE  LAKE. BETTER STILL......PUT IT ON THE CART PATH WHERE IT BELONGS !!!"

Thanks, Martha, for sharing your traumatic experience with us. Hope you don't get too much razzing about it.   Are there any other stories out there that need to be told? Please send them to me at callawaybill at shaw.ca .

MEMBERS IN THE NEWS

Helen Imburgia of Aston, PA has recently become Founder/President of The Delaware County Genealogical Society (DCGS) of PA. Anyone interested in more information about the society should contact Helen at HMWEBBER at aol.com .

Helen, it should be noted, did the genealogical research for author Patrick McGilligan on 2 biographies of movie stars Jack Nicholson and Clint Eastwood. The latter, CLINT: The Life and Legend, is due to be published soon. Congratulations, Helen.   Anyone else out there making headlines or just plain doing good things? Please let me know. Thanks.

CALLAWAY  RECIPES

One of our newest members, Dianna Callaway of Old Hickory, TN, in response to last month's request for new ideas for the Bulletin, has come up with the idea of featuring a different treasured Callaway recipe each month. This could be a continuation of "The Callaway Cookbook" which was published as a Custom Bound Limited Edition (1500 copies) in July 1992, according to the Callaway Communiqué of May 1992. The price was $22.95 plus $3.00 postage and handling. Does anyone know if there are still copies available?   Dianna's husband, Don Callaway, had a Great Aunt Eunice who had a great baked bean recipe. Here it is :

Aunt Eunice's Sweet and Sour Beans

12 bacon strips
2 T. bacon drippings

3 lg. onions

1 cp. brown sugar

1 - 15 oz. can Lima Beans

1 - 15 oz. can Kidney Beans

1 - 15 oz. can Butter Beans

1 - 29 oz. can Pork and Beans

1 t. dry mustard

1 t. ginger

1 t. salt

1/2 cup apple vinegar

Fry, drain, and crumble 10 bacon strips. Fry last 2 strips in clean frying pan. Set bacon aside. Slice onions into rings, and sauté in bacon drippings. Mix in sugar, mustard, salt, ginger and vinegar. Simmer for 20 minutes. Drain beans, and place in large casserole dish. Pour in simmered mixture. Place bacon on top. Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour. Stir and enjoy! It's great for picnics and barbeques!
Who is next to submit a Callaway recipe for sharing with your Callaway Cousins?

FAMILY DATABASE  EXCHANGE

Speaking of sharing, another new CFA member, Robert Stansbury of Pleasant Grove, AL, has suggested that we invite people interested in sharing their family databases by e-mail to get together somehow.   Bob has already exchanged Family Tree Maker and Gedcom files with quite a few folks (not CFA members, though). It has the distinct advantage of avoiding typing/input errors, he says, by not having to retype all the information you get from someone. Russ Callaway, Kermit Bridges, Gary Garnett, and probably others should be able to provide input to this idea. Bob's e-mail address is rastansbury at worldnet.att.net.

WORTHWHILE  WEBSITES

A Canadian prospective member, Laurie Deelman of Port Alberni, B.C., e-mailed me to ask if I had spotted an interesting website. It happens to be part of Bill Kellaway Piper's Website, that was mentioned in Bulletin #4 in May 2000. Since Bill has just rejoined CFA, this might be an appropriate time to highlight it. Try http://members.tripod.co.uk/dreycott/links.htm   You will find REQUESTS FOR KELLAWAY CONTACTS. It is like a query column for all spellings of Callaway.
