THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION Volume XI No. 8
Always regard
with esteem the name you were given; The Editor's Corner Our thanks once again to CFA Member, Bill Piper in the UK for sharing the following very interesting story of Matilda Jane Kellaway, or is it Mary Eliza Tremaine, or is it Mary Eliza Field, or is it Mary Eliza Teale, etc. etc. etc. Her story reads like a Soap Opera! "Mary
Eliza" again. - Since the committal of this imposter to the
sessions, we have been furnished with other particulars of her
past life. Her real name is Matilda Jane Kellaway, as returned
by the parochial authorities at Chelsea. She visited Darlington
a second time in November, 1854, when, under the name of "Mary
Eliza Smith," alias "Mary Eliza Kellaway," she was brought up at
the police office, charged with obtaining money, food, and
clothing, by pretending to be the daughter of Mr. Joseph Pease,
of Darlington, eloping from her father's house. When before the
Darlington magistrates, she declared her age to be 22, but she
was evidently a great deal older. Mr. Pease told the bench that
she was in the habit of going about the country as an imposter,
assuming to be the daughter of some influential gentleman. She
had pretended to be the daughter of Dr. Hook, and said she had
turned to be a Roman Catholic, and was turned out in
consequence. She had assumed Mr. Pease's name on several
occasions, and had imposed on some of his friends in Norwich.
She had been in gaol (jail) several
times. Scarcely a month passed but he received letters about
her. She was committed at Norwich, and the last trouble he had
with her was in the summer of 1854, when his son found her in
Cornwall. She declared she had had three governess's situations,
and had taught English, French, and music to private pupils. She
was at that time committed to Northallerton House of Corrections
for three months to hard labour. - Leeds Mercury.
Conviction of Eliza Tremaine, at Leeds. - On Saturday morning,
at the Leeds Quarter Sessions, Mary Eliza Tremaine, alias
Kellaway, alias Field, was charged with stealing a pair of
scissors, handkerchief, purse, and some money, from John Clough,
landlord of the Bridge Inn, Ferrybridge, near Durham. It
appeared that the prisoner went to the prosecutor's house in
December last, giving her name as Mary Eliza Teale, and on the
evening of her arrival informed him, under an oath of secresy,
that she had escaped from a convent in France, and had spent all
her money in travelling, but was possedded of landed property in
Oxfordshire worth 1,400£. a year. She stayed some days at the
Bridge Inn, and promised Mr. Clough, in return for his kindness
to her, a "deed of gift" for 120£. a year. With the view of
having it "completed," he accompanied her to Leeds, from which
place he went, by her request, to Headingley in search of her
uncle. On his return she was not to be found, except by the aid
of the police, who discovered her in a cottage, to which she had
obtained access by a similar pretence as that by which she
imposed upon Clough. When she was searched, the stolen property
was found on her. The jury at once found her guilty, and the
Recorder, observing that she had been convicted of similar
frauds at Liverpool in 1848, at Derby in 1851, at Northallerton
in 1854, at Oxford in 1855, and subsequently at Reading,
sentenced her to penal servitude for six years.
Editor’s note - I encourage each of
you to send in articles for the e-Newsletter. It doesn’t have to
be lengthy. It could be some "Callaway" news, a family story, a
family photo, a favorite family recipe, results from your family
line research, or any item you think would be of interest to our
readers. Send them to me, and I will take care of adding them.

Hi, Donna.
Thanks for writing back. Sorry I took so long
to reply.
This link goes to a Rootsweb web page that
shows two documents. The first document is the pension
application mentioned in your June CFA newsletter, and the
second document lists several children of James Jr. and says
he escaped from the British for awhile but was later
recaptured while drying fish and frogs for food.
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vafrankl/jamesandsusanwhitecallawayw9771.htm -Randy I would like to thank Pennie Eiben for telling us about her Callaway connections. She may be a candidate for the Guinness World Records because of the number of different connections she has to the same Callaway line! Hello Everyone, Here is my
complicated Callaway connection!
Agnes/Agnes Callaway was my great-great-great
Grandmother. She married William Smith. Their daughter
Susanna "Sooky" Smith would be my Aunt. She married
Flanders Callaway, who was her Uncle. So I have an Uncle
marrying an Aunt.
Ambrose Callaway, son of James
Callaway and Susannah White, was not only brother to
my great-great -great Grandmother Agness/Agatha
Callaway, but he married Susan Jackson. Susan
Jackson was the daughter of Congrave Jackson and
Margaret Bush. Her brother was James Jackson. James
Jackson's son Thomas Jackson was my great-great
grandmother's father.
Then to top it off, I marry a man who is a great (not sure how many greats) something of Elijah Callaway and Mary Cutbirth. And he also had another connection to the Callaway family.
So my children come from Elijah Callaway,
James Callaway. Plus being related to Daniel Boone and
Jacob Faw and Flanders Callaway who were all close
friends.

Query # 497
Subject – Bethany Arnold
Submitter - Bruce Wheat, Hoover, AL
email - Grwtanz at aol.com
Donna, in reference to the article in the July, 2008 CFA newsletter, I wonder if Randall Arnold that built the home in 1860 was related to Bethany Arnold that married John Farrar Callaway (brother of Job) around 1764 in Wilkes Co., Georgia (Washington). John Farrar and Bethany were parents to my 4th Great Grandmother, Mary Callaway. I have not searched Bethany's lineage.
Editor's Note - I have not seen this John Callaway with a middle name of Farrar. Can anyone confirm or deny that his middle name was Farrar? I have only seen the name Farrar used in our Joseph Callaway line.

I am looking for descendants

and Aletha had a daughter named Lois and that they lived in Old

It would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance

James Tillman Callaway
James William Callaway
Aletha Irene Callaway
Information on
James Walter Callaway and his descendants was submitted to CFA
via email by Buddy Stacy Keeton 1/2007. It is suggested but no
documentation has been found yet, to confirm that this James
Walter Callaway is the son of Chesley Callaway, Jr. who was born
bet. 1784-89 in VA.
They are listed on the 1850, 1860, 1870 Lincoln Co., MO census.

My interest is in Polly Callaway who married William North from Bedford Co., Va. I am lost after their marriage and William's death in 1788. Polly moved to KY after William's death and remarried a Baker and had 9 additional children I have read. I can't seem to find out any other info on William's son William, other than his marriage to Polly Ray. Does any of this info sound familiar?
Editor's Note - I wrote to Sonja with the following information:
CFA shows the marriage of William North and Mary Polly Callaway
and their 2 children; John and William, Jr. We also show William
Jr. marrying Elizabeth Lyons. But we have no record of a Polly
Ray.
Then about 1789-1790 Mary Polly married Joshua Baker and they had 11 children. They were married in Jessamine Co., KY.

I am attempting to find a photograph of Eliza H. Browning, a friend of Abraham Lincoln and wife of Orville Browning. The Brownings were residents of Quincy, IL. Eliza was the daughter of Frances Irvine and Robert Caldwell.
I work at the historical society in Quincy. In our collection are letters to and from Catherine Hickman Prewitt. Eliza would have been a granddaughter of Lydia Callaway Irvine Hickman (1764-1835)I think a descendant of Catherine Hickman Prewitt, half sister of Eliza's mother, might have a photograph of Eliza. Would there be a way to let your members know of our need?
