CFANET e-NEWSLETTER
  August 2000

Volume I  No. 7

EDITOR'S COMMENTS   Welcome to Bulletin # 7. I hope the heat of summer is not getting you down, as I notice from the weather maps that many parts of the USA are sweltering in 90+ degree temperatures. Here in B.C., we'll take all the warm weather we can get.   I want to tell you about a recent innovation on our CFA Website. Donna Morgan, the Webmaster, has put all the past issues of the Bulletin (except the first one) on a special link on the home page. Just go to www.callawayfamily.org and click on Bulletin Archives, and you will then be able to check out each month's issue, starting with March 2000.   We hope that this will be a useful tool, not only for our CFANET members, but also for the many outsiders who visit our Website from time to time. If anyone has suggestions for other improvements, please contact Donna at dfmorgan at vnet.net . She is doing a wonderful job for the Callaway Family Association.

CALLAWAY COMMUNIQUÉ   In years past, the CFA published a quarterly Newsletter, which was mailed to all members. Sara Callaway, the then Publication Assistant, kindly sent me some old copies of the Callaway Communiqué starting with Volume 1, Number 1 - August 1990, plus various samples up to Vol. 6, No. 2 - May 1996. That last issue had an interesting notice, "CFA Home Page on Internet". "Thanks to a donation and the support of Charles Hudson, Jr., the Archives is now on the Internet. Russell Callaway has written the home page for the CFA. If you have access to the Internet, look us up and take a peek. "We've come a long way in the past 4 years, thanks to all the hard work of Russ and our Webmasters, first Cameron Callaway, and now Donna Morgan. One of the regular items in the Communiqué was "In Memoriam". In this issue of the Bulletin we have two important announcements to be made, with regret.

IN MEMORIAM   A note from our President, Victoria Jennings, informed us that:
"My mother, Jane Harris, died Friday, July 7. She was in the hospital, having broken her hip the previous Monday. She developed pneumonia and simply stopped breathing about  5.30 p.m. She had been unresponsive for about 24 hours and was ready to go. "She was a Charter member of the CFA and was fiercely proud of her Callaway heritage. She was 88 years old - the last of her generation. She saw a lot in her life, from the Indian reservation where she was born in Oklahoma to Washington in the 21st century. But I think those who knew her would agree - she was a lady of the Old South. "She was buried in Greenville, South Carolina, with my father (Ralph Harris). A memorial service will be held for her at Bethesda Presbyterian Church, Maryland, on Saturday, August 19, 2000. "Thanks to all of you for your support during these last years. My mother knew she was loved and cared for."                       Victoria   =========================================================================

Another sad note arrived about the same time, this one passed on by Russ Callaway. "The mother of Mrs. Eugene C. (Sara) Callaway, Mrs. Guy (Opal) Bennett died Wednesday, July 12. Funeral services were held July 14 at Pleasant Hill Church in New Albany, MS. She was 91 years of age." Gene and Sara Callaway are Charter and Life members of CFA. Gene is a Past President and Sara was Publisher of the Communiqué, as noted above.   =========================================================================

Our sympathy is extended to Victoria and to Sara on the loss of their mothers.

TWENTY-FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION

In recognition of the 25th anniversary of CFA, Gene Callaway has submitted a thoughtful article which is included in its entirety below.
REFLECTIONS OF 25 YEARS WITH THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSN.
Many thoughts and memories flow through my mind as I reflect on the past 25 years of our Association. From 1976-85 I served as a Board member,1985-87 as 2nd Vice President, and again in 1990, then 1991-93 as 1st Vice President and finally 1993-96 as President. I have served in some category of the Association for 25 years.   It all began for me with a letter that arrived in 1974 from the newly elected President, Dr. Hobart Bartlett, inviting Callaways to become members of the CFA. Years before, in the 1950s, I had been searching for my Callaway roots assisted by a cousin, Roselle Callaway Wax of Amory, MS. I had learned through her the names of several researchers. They were Jean Stephenson, Helen Prescott, Ruth Philbrick, and Frances Mitchell. Ruth Philbrick was one of the founding members of the CFA and served on the Board as a Director.   My wife, Sara, and I attended the first and second CFA meetings at Callaway Gardens in 1975 and 1976. There we were privileged to become acquainted with many of our founding leaders including Hobart Bartlett, Sherrill Williams, Bobbie Callaway, Gus Partee, Ben Callaway, Anne Scott and John Mauldin, Gene and Avola Callaway, Berniece Shaw, Rev. Edgar A. Callaway, Lew L. Callaway, Jr., William C. Callaway, Ruth Philbrick and others.   In 1976, President Bartlett asked the late Bobbie Callaway and me to serve as members of the History Committee, assisting Helen Marshall, the first Historian. Shortly afterwards Helen died and Bobbie became the Historian. She and I worked several years together, along with Bill Nelson of Memphis, TN.   A workshop was held in Memphis on June 29, 1978, the purpose being to organize the various functions of the History Committee:

(1) To complete the master file of papers currently turned in by members in the form of bios and family data sheets, and
(2) To make suggestions for the future structure and duties of this committee.

The committee members kept a card file on all members and their Callaway ancestor. Biographical sheets were collected and filed on each member, along with Family Group Sheets and Pedigree Charts. These are now housed in the Archives in LaGrange, GA.   In later years, about 1984, when Dr. Joe Callaway became President, he asked if I would chair an Archives Committee to write guidelines for the preservation of records to be housed in the Troup County, Georgia, Archives. We are indebted to the late Fuller Callaway, Jr., for making these facilities available for the Callaway archives.   The Archives Committee consisted of four members - Pres. Joe Callaway, 2nd VP Gene Callaway, historian Bobbie Callaway and Genealogist Sherrill Williams. A committee workshop was held July 7-9. 1985 at the Archives in LaGrange, GA. Randall Allen, Archival Processor, assisted in establishing, arranging and processing the materials that had been submitted and donated to the Archives. An attractive brochure was prepared and sent to all members at that time.   One of the greatest assets of the Association has been the publishing of the Journal.  The Editor, Ben Callaway, has produced Journals for 24 years that are used worldwide as a genealogical tool, as well as being a general record of the Callaway Family Association's meetings, activities, and membership information.  You can find them in private homes, libraries, and genealogical societies throughout our country.  Another outstanding accomplishment of the Association has been the reading and publishing of the census records beginning with the 1790 census.   Another significant event that I remember was the establishment of the Pioneer Trails Charitable Trust.  This Trust has enabled the Callaway Family Assn. to secure grants to conduct genealogical research in the United States and England.   Two of the most significant major undertakings of the association in the nineties has been the technical aspect and the sending of genealogists to England to search for Callaway data.  We all are indebted to Russell Callaway and his computer expertise, and Sherrill Williams, Cary Moore, and Pat Schnurr for their super work searching the English records.   I have attended 22 of the annual meetings and throughout all of the meetings it has been a joy to meet and greet Callaway cousins, friends, new members and others.  All of the meetings have been well planned with social, genealogical, historical, and religious activities for all.  No other family Association can boast of a Convention. WE CAN!  The family has come together and grown together over the last 25 years.  We have lost many of our beloved members throughout the years, but new cousins have taken their places and will continue to take their place in years to come.
                                                                                                 Eugene Craven Callaway

There is much more to be included in this Bulletin, but I have a feeling it should be fed to you in small doses. Besides, my 6 visiting grandchildren are needing my attention, not to mention time on the computer. Ah, the lazy, hazy days of summer. So, in the manner of Bulletin #6, this one will be divided into 2 (or more) parts. More to follow soon.

CFANET BULLETIN 2000 - # 7, Part 2

August 4, 2000

FROM THE EDITOR

Well, it's time to finish the Bulletin for this month. I am finding that summer is not a good time to be doing this job, what with the fine weather, visiting family, golf games, etc. Is anyone still home to read this, anyway? There has been very little feedback on the first part of #7, but then a lot of people may be away on holidays. Maybe they went over to England to help the Queen Mother celebrate her 100th birthday, which is today. Coincidentally, this is the day that World War I started in 1914.   Speaking of England, Pat Schnurr had surgery recently and will be unable to go there on the research trip later this month, according to Cary Moore. Our best wishes for a complete recovery go out to Pat. Hope we'll see you at Callaway Gardens in October anyway, Pat.

25TH ANNUAL MEETING - OCTOBER 12-15, 2000 - CALLAWAY GARDENS, PINE MOUNTAIN, GA

The registration package should be in the mail to all members at this very moment. Meeting Chairman, Victor Callaway, is aiming to make this meeting a special and memorable one.   Please make every possible attempt to attend this very important meeting. You won't regret it. Mail or phone your hotel registration to Callaway Gardens as soon as possible.   Hope to see you there.

A LETTER FROM DR. JOSEPH PITT CHANCEY, JR.  To Assistant Secretary, Martha Winkler:

I'm enclosing membership fees for the year of 2000 for my mother and myself. Pardon the slowness of renewal of membership, but this has been a rather hectic year for the Chancey family, with me having heart and lung surgery in February, and my having to move my Mother from assisted living to a nursing home in March. Things are working out very good at this time, however. I wanted to mention to you, and would like this passed along to CFA members, that my Mother, who is a Charter member of the association, is now 101 years old and is really doing very well. She has always loved the CFA, enjoyed going to the annual meetings, and worked so much on research in my father's Callaway lineage. My grandmother on my father's side was a Callaway. One of Mother's favorite people was Dr. Hobart Bartlett, one of the Charter members, and there are so many more. I must "pick her brain" for more information, for I am not really into genealogy as she was.   I do get the e-mail, and today received CFANET BULLETIN #5. I will share information from these bulletins with my Mother. She has said that she would so much like to go to the Georgia meeting this year, but that of course is not possible.   Thanks for your time.

THE GLOBAL GAZETTE -- Canada's Family History Magazine

Recently I discovered this very interesting publication on the Internet through its parent Web site www.globalgenealogy.com . It turns out that the Operations Manager for this company, located in Milton, Ontario, is one Helen Callaway, who was born in the same city that I was - Hamilton, Ontario.    She is married to Donald Callaway, whose father, brother, 2 uncles and 2 male cousins still live in the area. It so happens they were on my list of Callaways to contact in Ontario this month, as part of my Canadian recruiting drive. Actually, they make up nearly a third of all the Callaways in the whole province.   What a find, to come across a "cousin" who is involved in genealogy in a business way as well as in a personal way. The company, GlobalGenealogy.com, is putting on a Global Family History Fair 2000 on October 14 & 15, with a truly impressive list of workshops and speakers. Unfortunately, the dates coincide with our CFA Annual Meeting.   Helen says "If you have any Callaway events that you would like to post, we would be pleased to include them in the Global Gazette. The Gazette can be viewed at www.globalgazette.net." A notice about our 25th Annual Meeting might be in order.   Have a look at these web sites. I think you will find them most enlightening. And watch for new members for CFA from Ontario.

INTERMISSION

There is still more to come, but that will have to wait for another day. By then we may have a report on the Georgia Picnic held on July 29.     THANK YOU.   Bill Callaway, CFANET Coordinator
