THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION
CFANET e-NEWSLETTER
  July 2000

Volume I  No. 6

EDITOR'S COMMENTS   As promised in the last Bulletin, this issue will be devoted to the CFA Board Meeting which took place in Kansas City, MO on June 2 & 3, 2000. I was privileged to be there as a guest to report on CFANET, and what an eye-opener it was. As a relative newcomer to the Association, I was amazed at the scope of the work that is done by the Officers and Directors month after month.   Here then is my bird's eye view of the deliberations which lasted for 8 hours on the Friday night and all day Saturday. My recollections have been aided by the comprehensive set of Minutes dutifully compiled by our Recording Secretary, Faye Garnett of Des Moines, IA. My apologies to Board members for any errors or omissions or for the recounting of things which didn't actually happen.

GETTING STARTED   Past President Dr. Hugh Port Callaway of Waverly, MO had arranged an excellent meeting site at the Homewood Suites Hotel, near the Kansas City Airport. Sixteen of the 21 Board members arrived from all parts of the country, some accompanied by spouses who were invited to sit in on the meeting if they so wished.   President Dr. Victoria Jennings of Chevy Chase, MD opened the meeting at 7:00 P.M. and after the usual preliminaries of welcome, introductions, announcements and agenda review, plus the approval of the October 1999 Minutes, the serious business commenced.

TREASURER'S REPORT   Heide Callaway of Concord, NC presented a written report for the period Jan.1 - Jun.1, 2000 which showed total funds on deposit of $52,012.77 but this does not include the cost of printing the Journal, which is usually around $11,000.   It is interesting to note that the membership dues to date amount to about the same figure. Handling the large number of cheques that come in, is obviously a big chore for Heide. Sales of Journals, census, index, note paper, coat-of-arms, & slides/photos total about $770.

SECRETARY'S REPORT   Judy Ostler of Crockett, TX reviewed the Membership Report, stating that there currently are 599 members, of whom 51 are Life, 389 Active, 142 Joint (spouses of Active) & 17 Supporting.   Another breakdown showed 558 Renewals, 27 Reinstatements, but only 14 New members.   There are 117 Charter members and 16 "Foreign" members from 5 different countries.   Judy maintains a very comprehensive database of all members and, among other things, can tell you which years any member (past or present) has belonged to CFA. From this she prints labels for Renewal notices, Journal mailings, etc. A formidable task performed ably by a very organized lady.   And then there are a myriad of other tasks for the Secretary to attend to, which are so numerous that a feature article, along with a Bio, should grace a future Bulletin.   Judy requests that if anyone has a change of address, to please notify her as it affects their mailings, especially the Journal mailings.

THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION BROCHURE   Cary Moore of Birmingham, AL agreed to chair a small committee to redesign, edit the text and make additions to the CFA brochure, which needs to be updated. A report will be made to the Board at the October meeting, and then a new supply will be printed.   These brochures are distributed to all new members, passed out at state picnics and reunions, and sent to libraries and to prospective members.

THE CALLAWAY JOURNAL, VOLUME XXV,  2000   Ben Callaway of Cherry Hill, NJ, the Editor of the Journal, was unable to be at the Board meeting, but Victoria read his report.   He planned to have the Journal mailed out (by Rusty Callaway of Columbia, GA) in early June and by now you will have received your copy and read it from cover to cover. Ben has been the Editor of our Journal for all but the first one and he has hinted to me it may be time for a younger person to take over. But who could replace him? What a superb job he has done, year after year! The meeting adjourned for the night at 9:00 P.M. and reconvened at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday morning.

MEMORABILIA   Waldo Callaway of Cape Coral, FL reported on the various items that are now for sale, such as CFA Journals (Vols I - XXV), Journal Index, Video Tapes of Annual Meetings (1987 - 1999), Callaway Coat-of-Arms Jewelry, and Miscellaneous Items such as mugs, note paper & slides (both of St. Neot's windows, England), 5-generation charts and family group charts.   Pat Schnurr of Maitland, FL showed a canvas bag as an example of a new item that could be sold. Waldo's wife, Mary Ann, was designated to look into design and color. See page 27 of Journal 2000 for more details re Memorabilia.

FIVE STAR MEMBERS   Nancy Russell of Perrysburg, OH reported on the process of becoming a Five Star Member. She suggested that one should include photos (at least 3 taken at various ages of their life), and a family history in a video, audio or written presentation.   Victoria suggested that a future Bulletin could include some publicity in order to make a major pitch for the Five Star Membership at the 25th Anniversary in October. Nancy agreed to submit an article, which will make this program more widely known and better understood.   For more information on how to become a member of this exclusive club, check page 17 of your Journal 2000. So far, only Richard King and Russell Callaway have earned this distinction.

AMENDMENTS TO THE CFA BY-LAWS   Richard (Dick) King of Madison, IN reported on the proposed amendments, which were passed unanimously by the Board. They are as follows:
Amendment #1:
Article III - The Board of Directors, Section 5 - Officers Include "Technologist" and "Assistant Secretary" in the list of Officers. They are Russell Callaway of Concord, NC and Martha Callaway Winkler of Denver, CO respectively.   Article IV - Duties of Officers, new Section 11 - Technologist "The Technologist shall serve as the Chairman of the Technology Committee and shall have the responsibility for the general work of that committee."   Article VI - Standing Committees, new Section 10 - Technology "The Technology Committee shall be composed of the Technologist as Chairman, and such other members as shall be appointed by the President. It shall be the duty of this Committee to develop and carry out activities related to research and communication that are based on electronic and other emerging technologies. The Technology Committee also will provide recommendations and guidance to the Board on the purchase, maintenance, etc., of equipment for research and communication."
Amendment #2:
Article III - The Board of Directors, Section 7 - Terms of Office "The Directors and Officers shall be recommended by the Nominating Committee and elected by the Membership at the annual meeting to serve for a term of three years. The Directors and Officers may only be re-elected for a second three-year term in the same office. No Director, nor the President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, nor Third vice President shall serve more than two consecutive three-year terms. A term of office shall begin on January first following the election and continue until re-elected or replaced."
Judy Ostler volunteered to retype the CFA By-Laws and have them ready for distribution at the October annual meeting.

REQUEST TO PIONEER TRAILS CHARITABLE TRUST (PTCT)   President Victoria related that there has been communication between CFA and PTCT for the purpose of requesting funds for this year's research trip to England. This is to include:  (1) hiring the services of a professional genealogist in England to help in obtaining our goal, (2) a planning meeting of our three researchers prior to their trip .   The amount being requested this year is $20,000.

RESEARCH TRIP TO ENGLAND   Pat Schnurr reported that the research team, consisting of Sherrill Williams (Genealogist) of Unicoi, TN, Cary Moore and herself, would be going to England for the 4th consecutive year, from August 27 to September 27, 2000.   Bernard Welchman is the registered, certified Genealogist who will pick them up at Gatwick Airport in London and take them to 5 western counties. He will assist them in each county.   The team will meet in Atlanta, GA for a strategic planning meeting, prior to departure.

GENEALOGIST'S REPORT   Sherrill Williams was asked to report on her work and progress on the first few generations of the Peter and Joseph lines. She stated her data is a reworking of the information found in Journal V. She will include the corrections and new data, in copies to be printed (in booklet form) that will be given out for the 25th Anniversary.

25TH ANNUAL MEETING - OCTOBER 12-15, 2000   Meeting Chairman Victor Callaway of Boston, MA stated that the 25th Anniversary is a most important milestone for the Callaway Family Association and, therefore, his goal is to make this meeting at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, GA, a special and memorable one.   Full details and registration forms will be mailed to all members soon. There is a very interesting article about Callaway Gardens on pages 3 & 4 of Journal 2000, and you can visit their web site at www.callawaygardens.com .

The meeting recessed for lunch and I think I had better interrupt this Bulletin here so it does not become too long. Is anyone still reading?   The final session, on Saturday afternoon, dealt with State/Regional reports, followed by Technology reports from Russ Callaway, Bill Callaway and Kermit Bridges. The final report was from the Nominating Committee, and the meeting closed with a discussion of future meetings. My "take" on these will be presented in a follow-up Bulletin shortly. This being "Canada Day", I need to go and wave the flag for a bit.   Bill Callaway, CFANET Coordinator Parksville, B.C., Canada

CFANET  BULLETIN 2000  # 6,  July 2000 Part 2

EDITOR'S MUSINGS   The first part of this Bulletin was written on Canada Day, and it is being concluded on Independence Day. Being a Canadian, and one of the few "foreign" members of the Callaway Family Association, my knowledge of U.S. history is not what it should be. But as I ponder the significance of the 4th of July, I wonder what the Callaways were doing during the American Revolution. Did any remain loyal to Britain? Did any return to England?   While perusing the Index to the Callaway Journals, I came across only 2 references to the revolution: "Peter Callaway, Revolutionary Soldier;" (Vol. VIII, 1983) and "Samuel Callaway, Revolutionary Soldier;" (Vol. X, 1985). I will have to obtain copies of those articles to expand my knowledge of the Callaways in that period of time.   Last year there was a very interesting PBS mini-series titled "Liberty - The American Revolution". It has a PBS Companion Site at revolution.h-net.msu.edu/ which contains, among many other things, an essay by Susan Lindsey Lively, of Harvard University, called "Rediscovering Britain." She states that "Americans who came in contact with Britons found themselves to be objects of curiosity." It is to be hoped that our "Three American Ladies" did not experience such a greeting on their last 3 trips to England.

CFA BOARD MEETING - JUNE 3, 2000 (Continued)   When the first part of this Bulletin ended, the Board had recessed for lunch on Saturday. Upon returning, they plunged into the remaining agenda items, beginning with:

Genealogical Data: Victoria announced that Connie Sherrill agreed to be the person to receive all biographical data and family sheets sent out to new members. She will then send them to the designated persons who are handling and processing them. She also will be responsible for keeping the 5-Star Membership records so we will know what has been completed by whom.

State / Regional Organization:   Carole Romano of Castroville, TX, CFA National State/Regional Chairman, was unable to be at the meeting. In fact, she and Louis were celebrating their 47th wedding anniversary in New York City. So her report was read by Judy Ostler.   After commenting on the successful picnics held in Texas on March 11,and in Arkansas on April 29, Carole stated that attendees are encouraged to attend the CFA annual meetings as well. She reiterated her feeling (expressed eloquently in Bulletin #5) that we must target the younger members in order to have a group ready to assume CFA duties in a few years. Carole again asked Board members to become involved or try to find someone to chair their state or region.

Arkansas Reunion:    Don and Evelyn Dixon of Benton, AR reported on the picnic held on their farm on April 29, 2000. There were 45 Callaways/Calloways of all ages in attendance, including 3 CFA Directors. Due to the enthusiastic results, they plan to have another reunion next year.

Louisiana Reunion:   Connie Sherrill of Strong, AR reported on the origin of the Louisiana Calloway reunion, which was born as a result of two of her ancestors working on genealogy. After contacting and communicating with various family members (many that they did not know) to collect family history data, it was decided to have a picnic to meet everyone.   Their first Calloway reunion was held July 18, 1971 with 150 people in attendance. This has continued each year since, and is now held the first Sunday in August every year.

Georgia Picnic:   Not mentioned at the Board meeting, but needing to be publicized in this Bulletin, is the upcoming Georgia Callaway Picnic which will take place in Fayetteville, GA on July 29, 2000, hosted by Clay and Maria Callaway. Full details can be found in Bulletin #5.

TECHNOLOGY UP-DATE   Russell Callaway of Concord, NC is the Technologist mentioned in Article IV of the amended CFA By-Laws. In addition, he is 2nd Vice President.   Russ is responsible for "activities related to research and communication that are based on electronic and other emerging technologies". He reported on the new Web Site at www.callawayfamily.org stating that the new Webmaster, Donna Morgan, is doing a very fine job. Any changes to and proposals for the web site should be directed to Donna at dfmorgan at vnet.net.  Russ also reminded us that the Chat Room is the first Sunday night of each month at 10:00 P.M. Eastern Time. Kermit Bridges is the Facilitator, and he is also putting together 5 generation charts on Family Tree Maker with great hopes of merging generations. A separate report from Kermit appears below.   The Technologist proposed that the CFA purchase a digital camera (Sony MVC-FD88) at a cost of $650. The following uses were suggested:
1. Copy original documents into digital form.
2. Photograph each member at annual meetings.
3. Record their voices as a part of the camera record.
4. Make it available to regional meetings (adding those not able to attend annual meeting).
5. Input the Journals into a database. Approval was given to this proposal for digital record keeping.   Russ has since advised me that he was able to purchase a better model, Sony FD90, for the same price as the cheaper model. Good shopping, Russ. Although it was not part of the Board meeting, I think it is appropriate at this stage of the Bulletin to insert a very interesting Bio of our Technologist for your information.

MEMBER BIOGRAPHY - (Removed from CFA Web Site Archives)

To respect the privacy of our members, none of the biographies submitted to CFA will be posted on the CFA Web Site Newsletter Archives.

CFANET   Bill Callaway of Parksville, B.C., Canada (who happens to be writing this Bulletin, and can therefore take some liberties with the Minutes) as CFANET Coordinator, was asked to report on what this job means.   He gave a brief history of CFANET, which Russ Callaway had originated several years ago. It evolved from a few members passing on information to a number of other members (grouped alphabetically), through to a system of 14 Group Leaders forwarding Bulletins monthly to their own State / Regional groups. They deserve recognition, and are:

Group Leader Group Name Area Covered
Dorothy Rea of Kansas City, MO ACKOMN AZ, CO, KS, OK, MO, NV, NM, & UT
Martha House of Huntsville, AL ALARLA AL, AR, LA, & MS
Omar Callaway of Antioch, CA CAN California North

Roger Bartlett of Austin, TX TXNW Texas North West
J.E. Callaway of Beaumont, TX TXSE Texas South East
Sharon Provenzano of Poplar Grove, IL WHERE all unlocated CFANETers

Newly aligned groups will be established in the near future.   There were 184 CFANETers at the end of 1999, and this has now increased to nearly 300, which includes a number of prospective CFA members. Due to improved e-mail capabilities, it is now possible for the Bulletins to be sent to the total list at one time, instead of having to be forwarded by all the Group Leaders. This will free up the GLs to take on more challenging tasks for CFA, if they so wish, but these have yet to be determined.   Texas has the most e-mailers (38) followed by Georgia (30) and California (27). This was graphically shown on the map of the U.S.A., with a map pin placed at the location of each CFANETer. In all, 38 of the 50 states are represented. If you wish to see this map, it will be on display at the Annual Meeting.   The Bulletin 2000 has grown like topsy in the 6 months of its existence. My wife says "topsy-turvy" would be a more accurate description. It is hoped that it is fulfilling a useful function for CFA. The generous contributions of material from numerous people, makes the job much easier. Now, if only I could learn to type with more than 2 fingers.   Victoria stated that the Bulletin was an incentive for people to get e-mail, since we no longer have a newsletter. A question was asked about sending the Bulletin to those who do not have e-mail, and it was decided that extra copies will be made for distribution at the Annual Meeting.

FAMILY TREE MAKER PROJECT   Kermit Bridges of Meadow Bridge, WV reported on his work in merging all the 5 generation charts that Russ had given him. In the process of merging, he has found there are items in some of the original documents that need to be corrected. When finished, he will send to Donna Morgan, who will put it on the CFA web page. A big job, well done, Kermit.

NOMINATING COMMITTEE REPORT   The Nominating Committee consists of Dr. Hugh Port Callaway, Past President (Chairman), Sherrill Williams, Eugene Callaway & Russell Callaway.   It was reported that we have Board members whose terms are coming to an end. Mary Jo DuBois and Wanda Phillips would like to terminate their tenure on the Board.   Hugh Port said that two nominees, Kermit Bridges and Bill Callaway, have been asked to fill these vacancies, and they will accept this nomination at the October Board meeting.   Eugene Callaway reported that three other Directors have terms that are up, namely, Cary Moore, Don Dixon and Waldo Callaway. Each will be asked if they want to serve another term.

FUTURE MEETINGS   Victor Callaway said it was his understanding that the 26th Annual Meeting will be in Richmond, VA in 2001 and that the 27th will tentatively be in San Francisco, CA in 2002. Victor feels strongly that we should encourage hosts and hostesses for these Annual Meetings. Russ Callaway stated that Mr. and Mrs. John Callaway Olson will be the hosts for Richmond, VA.   Victoria Jennings brought up the possibility of having the Board meeting earlier in the year, giving more time to accomplish the various tasks between the Board meeting and the Annual meeting. After much discussion, it was decided to have the next Board meeting in May 2001 and Bill Callaway offered to host it in Victoria, B.C., Canada. The first weekend in May has been chosen, so as not to conflict with Mother's Day, Victoria Day and Memorial Day. Efforts are now being made to find a suitable venue for the meeting. The Empress Hotel seems to be the favored place at the moment. A number of hotels have been asked by Tourism Victoria to give quotes, with July 6 being the deadline.   Future board meetings will be where the date and climate permit. Victoria asked about having the 2002 Board meeting in Key West, FL. The meeting adjourned at 4:30 P.M. after a total of 8 hours of deliberations on the Friday and Saturday. The Board members then treated themselves to a well-deserved dinner at the famous Savoy Grill in downtown Kansas City. They were joined by two local CFANETers, Dorothy Rea and Berniece Miller. Two others, Ruth Kent and Phillip Callaway were unable to attend, unfortunately, due to prior commitments. By noon on Sunday, the hotel was devoid of CFA Board members. All were wending or winging their way home, after a very successful meeting which had been chaired in a most professional manner by our President, Victoria Jennings.

Happy 4th of July!
