THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION Volume VIII No. 6
Always regard
with esteem the name you were given; The Editor's Corner A little Famous Name Dropping (including Callaway of course!)
This time the names we drop are:
Kit Carson, Daniel Boone and Harriett Callaway.
In the early 1800s various family migrations brought members of
these families together in Howard Co., MO. I would like to thank
new CFA Member, Maureen Fish for sharing her research with us.
She descends through Charles Riley Callaway. Besides giving us
many new descendants of this line, she has also provided a copy
of Charles Riley Callaway's will which proves that this
Harriett Callaway is his daughter. Her
information has been added to the CFA master Joseph Callaway
file at RootsWeb. Harriett Callaway's line of descent is as
follows:
Harriett Callaway
So once again we have evidence that the Callaways played a strong role as pioneers, along with many famous families, during the early Westward-Ho movement in American history. I would also like to thank Maureen for sharing this wonderful picture of Anne Katherine Callaway and Robert Burrus family. Anne Katherine is the daughter of Achilles C. Callaway, and granddaughter of Charles Riley Callaway. Hi Donna,
Editor’s note - I encourage each of
you to send in articles for the e-Newsletter. It doesn’t have to
be lengthy. It could be some "Callaway" news, a family story, a
family photo, a favorite family recipe, results from your family
line research, or any item you think would be of interest to our
readers. Send them to me, and I will take care of adding them.
Graduation Congratulations
We all
send our congratulations to Sara Fisher for her
accomplishment and wish her success in her career.
Donna,
Her family lineage is
as follows: Thank You, Ready - Set - Go - Kellaways!
I would like to thank
Canadian CFA Member, Don Kellaway, for sharing with us this
wonderful family story and pictures. It is a snapshot in time of
a "Kinder and Gentler" World.
Donna, perhaps this might be an interesting item for the newsletter.
In the 1930s
depression my father Ed Kellaway and my father-in-law
Maurice Callaghan were among a group that decided to
establish an athletic club for the city's youth to keep them
occupied during those difficult years. Maurice mortgaged the
family home to obtain the funds for lumber to build a club
house on the water lot provided by the City of Belleville.
The club was known as the South End Athletic Club and in
addition to baseball, hockey and other team sports the
club also promoted theatre, boxing and sailing.
I have
attached a copy of a newspaper clipping of my father Ed
winning a race in 1933 and a picture of Maurice's punt the
"After U." The picture shows a type of boat locally called a
" sailing punt" common to the area having sailed on the Bay
of Quinte for over a hundred years. The clipping shows the
crew member hiking out on the hiking board (read plank) to
keep the boat upright. On windy days the larger the person
the better were his chances of crewing that day. If you
look closely you can make out the oar that was used to steer
the boat, everything about the boats was simple and
cheap. The definition of a punt is a flat bottom boat with
square ends and this description certainly fits the Quinte
sailing punts. The boats raced in several classes but all
boats were made by the owners, sails were obtained from
various sources for example, some were re-cut from old
schooner sails, made from canvas remnants from various
sources.
The boatyard was the backyard, the sail loft was the floor of the local armouries and materials were obtained in many ingenious ways, for example, one punt was owned by a man nicknamed "Froggy" who had made his sails from unbleached Redpath sugar bags and as a result the boat was called "Redpath Froggy". One of the punts was said to have been "carried out to plan", they planned all day and carried (lumber) all night. During the depression over 70 boats were built locally and many skills and relationships were developed in the building of these boats.
Rules were
simple, the punt classes were established on the length of
the boat alone, no professional built punts allowed, all
punts had to be planked athwartships (crossways) Only one
schoonerman could race in any boat as they were considered
professional sailors. The majority of punts were gaff rigged
sloops carrying enormous sails for their size (see picture).
Races were usually held in towns on the Bay of Quinte but
occasionally a punt would sail the hundred mile round trip
to Kingston for a weekend race.
Weekly races
were on Wednesday afternoons and the clock to start the race
was the town hall clock as it was visible to all from the
waterfront. The race would start and end at the mouth of the
harbour locally called a "boomerang course." My uncle was
frequently a starter for these races as was King Rogers who
had sailed in the 1881 America's cup challenge from
Belleville. It was common for hundreds of people to line the
shores and bridges to watch the punts race since capsizes
and gear failure was common during the race. Visiting yachts
from Toronto would stay over in town just to see the
Wednesday afternoon races. World War II saw the club go
dormant and efforts to revive it after the war in 1947 were
unsuccessful, the world had changed and the returning
veterans had other priorities.
Cheers, Don
Genealogy Vital Statistics Images and Indices On-line Many U.S. states have put vital statistic information on-line with free searchable databases and in some cases images of the actual certificate. Here are a few that are available, and some links that provide more information.
As of April 2006, the
state of Missouri has put death certificate images from
1910-1956 on-line. You can
search their free database at this link:
The University of
Kentucky has a searchable database of Kentucky deaths
covering 1911-1992. It provides vital information like date
and place of death, age at death and volume of death
certificate. It is only an index, but copies can be
requested
for a fee
from the
Kentucky
Department of Health Statistics in Frankfort, KY. You can
search the free database at this link:
Arizona offers a free
searchable database for birth (1887-1931) and death
(1878-1956) certificates including images of actual
certificates. You can search this database at this link:
Here is a free database
that provides links to state by county death records
available on-line. You can access it at this link:
And finally, here is a
Blog that is great for providing up to date availability for
all kinds of on-line U.S. genealogy records. Some are fee based
and some are free. It is called the Genealogy Roots Blog and

U. S. Joseph Callaway Line I would like
to thank Geneva Greer White for graciously sharing her research
with us. She has given us new information about Susannah
Callaway, wife of Joseph Bryan, Jr. Susannah Callaway's line of
descent is as follows: Susannah Callaway is in my Hartzog family line. Her husband Joseph Bryan, Jr. is a half brother to Rebecca Bryan, wife of Daniel Boone. Rebecca and Martha were children of Joseph Bryan, Sr.'s first wife, her name is not really known. The name I have used is the only one I have found but I have no proof. The reason so many genealogists think she belonged to Morgan Bryan is because she lived with her grandparents when Joseph went to Kentucky with his second wife Alice Linville. It is also thought that they belonged to Alice Linville but the records prove different. This connects you to the Bryan genealogy.
Name: Joseph Bryan
Father of Joseph: Morgan Morgan: Birth: 1671, Denmark
U.S.
and International Marriage Records, 1560-1900 Record
Virginia Land, Marriage, and Probate Records, 1639-1850
Virginia Land, Marriage, and Probate Records, 1639-1850 By this time much of his family had moved to Kentucky when he was about 78 years of age where he undertook his last big venture. He and Alice moved to Kentucky in 1798 where two of his sons and a son-in-law had established large plantations. He acquired an estate of about 14,000 acres at Floy's Fork, Shelby County. He died early in 1805 at age 85 in Jefferson County and left a will dated 20 Nov. 1804 in which he names his second wife and all of his surviving children, including his daughters Rebecca Boone and Martha Boone.
The
will follows: In his will, he mentions his wife, Aylee (probably a pet name for Alice), then his three sons, Samuel, Joseph and John, Martha Boone and Rebecca Boone. My other daughters, Mary Howard, Susanneh Hinkle, Aylee Howard, Phebe Forbis, Charity Davis, Eleanor Adams; grandchildren, Aylee Adams, Noah Adams, Jacob Adams, Wilah Adams.
Has
11 Living Children "In about 1737 Joseph first married and the name of his wife remains unknown. They probably had only two children, both daughters, and the best guess is that the first was Martha, born about 1737 and named for Joseph's mother. Rebecca, the second daughter, was born 9 January 1739." "Most biographers of the Bryan family appear to have been unaware of Joseph's first family and have attributed all of his children to his second wife known as "Aylee." Her real name was Alice (as proven by legal documents) and her surname was probably Linville. "Aylee" was no doubt a family nickname. This oversight will no doubt be perpetuated forever, because some researchers use material distributed or published in the past as factual. The clue to the fact that Joseph was married twice can be found on page 508 of Hazel Atterbury Spraker's "The Boone Family," published in 1922. Then on page 509 of this book, Joseph Bryan, Jr. states that he was the half brother of Daniel Boone's wife (Rebecca). None of the numerous volumes in our collection of Boone family history contain this vital information. Bobbie Callaway, historian for the Callaway Family Association, has long suspected that Martha and Rebecca Bryan were the offspring of a first wife, and that Joseph Jr. was not the oldest son of Joseph, as has been published over and over. As one of the most competent researchers it has been our privilege of knowing, Bobbie has gathered sufficient data to show Joseph Jr., who lived to age 92, was born about 1752 when Rebecca was approximately 13 years old."

Kilgroe Funeral Home - Leeds directing. Other C/K Lines Miners in Copper, Tin, Iron and Coal - a Kellaway family from Cornwall, England
Steam engines first pumped water out of mines in England, in
Cornwall in 1711. Thomas Newcomen invented the steam-powered
pump. James Watt improved it. While tin was the most valuable
metal mined in Cornwall, copper also was found in the mines. Two
mines alone produced twenty million dollars worth of tin and
copper. Mining continues in Cornwall today, although far less
than during the Nineteenth Century. But the invention of a
steam-powered machine to assist in mining brought about the
Industrial Revolution, and the modern world as we know it.
Henry Kellaway, a miner, was born in Cornwall about
1801. He had 4 sons, all miners. One of his sons immigrated
to America, others to Australia. It is interesting to note that this family name was
always spelled Kellaway on the UK census records from 1841-1901.
However, for the family members who immigrated to America, their
name was indiscriminately spelled with a C & K. . . . Now what
does that say about us "Yanks"?

Comment # 422 My father has been accumulating information about our family history. Our family has always believed that we were direct descendants of Daniel Boone and now my father, John Callaway (son of the late George H. Callaway) has found that we are only related by marriage. He also has a son Micajah.
Query
# 423
Dear Donna,
My Dad, Garland
Callaway, would like to find his nieces and nephews. He has
heard that they have been searching for him, but as of yet
there has been no contact. Our family is as follows:
Peter Callaway
John Callaway
Edward Callaway
Job Callaway, Sr.
Joshua Callaway
Leroy Callaway, Sr.
Roland Callaway
Joshua Socrates Callaway
Garland Callaway
This is what I know
about our family which probably isn't enough, but will have
to do at this time.
My Granddad, Joshua
Socrates Callaway was born 26 Sept 1902 in De Kalb, Bowie,
Texas. His parents were Roland Callaway and Nancy Elizabeth
Knight. Granddad went by two different nicknames that I
know of. The first one was J.S. and the other one was "Red"
because of his red hair. Granddad had three brothers -
James, Robbie, and Richard. Dad says they are all passed
away now. Granddad's first wife was Rubie, but I don't have
her last name. Together they had three children who were
Roweina, James, and Garland. (This Garland was my uncle and
my Dad was named after him because he was thought to be
missing in action in 1947, the year my Dad was
born.) Garland was born 6 Dec 1928 and died of cancer in
March of 1979. Granddad's second wife is my Grandma, Lila
LaVerne (Loyd) Callaway. This was also her second
marriage. Together, Grandma and Granddad had two boys. My
father is Garland Joshua Callaway and my uncle is Danny
Alvin Callaway. We have heard that the daughter of James
Callaway, my Dad's half-brother, is wanting contact with us,
but we don't know where she is and my Dad cannot find the
information. We want to get in contact with all our family
members. As for me, I never knew my extended family and
have always desired to know them. Is there any way that you
can help us find them?

Query # 424
Donna,
I just recently
mailed my check to become a member of CFA. Here is my
line:
Roy Whayne Callaway
(me)
Walter Burgess
Callaway
Jasper Marion
Callaway
Andrew Jackson
Callaway
Joseph Callaway
John Callaway
My question or
request for help or information is this: John Callaway,
according to rumor and some fact, is supposed to have
immigrated from Dublin, Ireland. Joseph Callaway, my
great great grandfather came from Virginia and settled
in Washington County, Indiana. He was married to Polly
Sloan. But, he is not part of the Joseph Callaway line
on which there has been much work done. There have been
a few Callaway's buried in Washington County, Indiana
including Flanders Callaway who was married to Jemima
Boone. but I cannot tie into any other Callaway's. Any
help, or information on who I could contact would be
appreciated.
Regards,
Roy Callaway
