Marriage At Covington
Nuptials of Miss Dearing to Mr. R. L. Callaway
from: The Augusta Chronicle, Augusta, Georgia, Sunday, March 9, 1890, p. 2A:

Covington, Ga., March 6 - The Presbyterian church in Covington, at 1 o'clock this afternoon was crowded to its utmost capacity, with an eager expectant throng, assembled to witness the marriage of Miss Eva St. Clair, daughter of Dr. J. J. Dearing to Mr. Robert Lee Callaway, of Lexington, Ga.
The attendant bride's maids dressed in white, entered the church just as the first notes of the wedding march from the organ, finely executed by Mrs. J. J. Corley were heard, and passing down the two aisles took positions in front and to the right and left of the pulpit, Miss Gussie Dearing with Mr. J. S. Callaway, of Lexington, Ga.; Miss Alice Dearing with Mr. Frank Smith, of Athens; Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Dearing, their own marriage vows but lately spoken still trembling in their lips and echoing in their hearts; Miss Fannie Brown with Mr. A. E. Dearing, Miss Bessie Grogan, of Elberton, Ga., with Mr. Z. H. Clarke, of Madison, Ga., Miss Annie Ethridge, of Birmingham, Ala., with Mr. J. P. Simms, Miss Nellie Neal with Mr. O. H. Arnold, Jr., of Machen, Ga., Miss Estelle Thompson with Mr. W. A. Shackleford, of Lexington, Ga., followed down the right aisle by the bride, pretty and sweet in white silk - wearing the same veil, rare old lace, worn by her mother a third of a century ago when she was a young bride with her father, and down the left aisle the groom with Rev. J. L. Rogers, the officiating clergyman.
The church was tastefully and elaborately decorated with a profusion of evergreens and flowers.  Above the pulpit was suspended a monogram beautifully done - the "C" made of scarlet geraniums and the "D" of mistletoe.
The ceremony over, the bridal party with quite a number of relatives and friends repaired to the residence of the bride's father, where a marvel of a dinner for the variety and excellent quality of the viands was charmingly and elegantly served.
The presents, some of them from friends and relatives in Virginia, were very numerous and many of them costly and exceedingly beautiful.
At 4 o'clock the bride and groom left Covington for an extended visit to Jacksonville and St. Augustine, Fla.

Church and Family History Research Assistance for Primitive Baptist Churches in Edgar County, Illinois

SUGAR CREEK

Sugar Creek Church, in Nevins (about seven miles southeast of Paris), was organized in about 1838. The church was already listed as a member of the Wabash District Association in 1839, at which time there were 49 members.

Elders William Shields, F. M. Reeds, Willis E. Gill, W. S. Jones, and probably several others, served this church as pastor.

SURNAMES OF MEMBERS:

Calloway, Cockroft, Craig, Davis, Dengler, Dodimeade, Downey, Downing, Drake, Edwards, Guyman, Holly, Hood, Jones, Kruzan, Mapes, Mason, Moffett, Parrish, Reeves, Rhoads, Shields, Tibbs, White, Zimerly (very incomplete list due to loss of records).

Census records show that Josiah Callaway, (Jonathan, William, Jr., William, Peter Callaway) had the following descendants through his son Jesse Callaway. I checked our Peter Callaway file after reading a query posted by Gail Mosuch on Ancestry.com and realized that our file showed no descendants for Josiah Callaway. Can anyone add to or correct the following information?

Here is the Query:
Looking for parents of Jesse Callaway - Married to Georgia - lived in Bibb Co., GA (Macon). Had a daughter named Addie. Census says he was born in Georgia. Any relation to the Wilkes Co., GA Callaways?
Addie is my great grandmother.

I wrote to Gail Mosuch about her query and here is her very nice reply:

Donna,
Thank you, thank you!—This seems to match up with my Jesse—now I can begin to try to document –My Line is as follows---Jesse Callaway, Addie Callaway (m. Lewis Elexander Hamlin), Lewis Elexander, Jr.. , Hubbard Hamlin, Charles Hamlin, GAIL.  This Hamlin line goes back to a Revolutionary War Soldier. if anyone would like the documentation on this and the ancestry, I will be glad to give it to them . I also received an email today that gave Georgia’s last name as Pratt.

I had already done some research on Jesse—He was in the Civil War… Enlisted  21 Oct. 1861 as a private in Co. A, 1st Independent State Troops Rgmt (Ga)----Mustered out on 02 May 1862 (Savannah, Ga.) Later enlisted in Co. D, 30th regiment on 4 June 1862. His Company fought in many historic battles including Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Pine Mountain, Ga., Kennesaw Mountain, and the Battle of Atlanta. He was wounded in August 1864 at Jonesboro, GA..  I am planning to get his records from the Georgia archives  as soon as I can.

Do  you know where I can find documentation on Jonathan and William Jr.? (Wills, deeds, court documents, land grants, etc.) Something that proves that William is the father of Jonathan and that Jonathan is the father of Josiah----Also anything that proves Peter is the father of William? I am very big on documentation.

Yes, please put me on the newsletter list.

Other C/K Lines

I would like to welcome Donald Stuart (Don) and Joyce Callaway, from Australia. With lots of chat back and forth and some census searching we have hopefully discovered some answers about this new Callaway family with a long history of service in the Royal Navy.

My husband Donald Stuart is the only son of George William Callaway.  There is a branch of the family in San Francisco, descended from his Uncle Thomas, who somehow landed up in America 20 years or so after jumping ship in Sydney, Australia! We are in contact with members of this branch, but wonder how we can ascertain if there are any other family members in America? Incidentally, we have a son Hugh and he has a son David, so the line continues!

My father-in-law always said he was one of 20 but we have only been able to trace six, four of whom are female., so it may have been just his joke!  George & Thomas seem to be the only males, hailing from Gloucester, England originally, George settling in Plymouth eventually.  Donald was born in Liskeard, Cornwall.

Donald's sister Beryl married a Canadian., Howard Newcombe and had three sons, two of whom have families.

I'd be interested to hear of any means whereby I can see if there are any more of this branch of the family in America.

Sincerely,
Joyce Callaway

Editor's Note - and an additional note from Joyce with more family information -

Greetings to you all, Donna, Sherrill and Bruce with apologies from me for not replying to your welcome e-mails sooner - I hope you don't mind a joint letter. I was in a bit of a quandary as to how to reply as it seems as though "you  guys" are clued up more than I am, so I thought I would insert a couple of photos and answer questions.  From this you can gather that I am fairly new to tracking down ancestors, at least as far as the Callaways are concerned, as they are remarkably reticent, an English characteristic...they don't see why anybody should be interested!

A brief family tree.....George William, my father-in-law, was born, as far as we know, in Gloucester, England,  one of the sons of Thomas James and his wife Charlotte Sarah. He definitely had two sons, possibly three.....(1) George William (2)  Thomas Charles and possibly (3) Charles.....I have no record of birth dates apart from George William, who was born in October 1884 and died in Plymouth, Devon in November, 1969. There were also sisters Mabel (Mab), Isabelle (Belle) and Charlotte (Lottie).

My husband Donald Stuart, George William's only son was born in Liskeard, Cornwall, the home county of his mother Mary (Molly) Hill.  He also has a sister, living in Canada, Beryl Honor.

Thomas Charles Callaway  emigrated to America after a career in the Royal Navy, during which he jumped ship twice in Australia but was returned to his ships.  There is a gap of 20 years about which we know nothing.  His descendants live in San Francisco and we are in contact with his surviving male  descendant  Scott...he has a sister Patricia.  I am not certain whether Thomas Charles is Scott's Grandfather or Great GF, all I know is that TC is my late father-in-law's brother, therefore Uncle to my husband.

I hope this is of help and if you want to add anything more to this Donna, please let me know exactly what you want i.e. history, or whatever!  Thanks to you all.....
Joyce

Query # 356
Subject:
Revolutionary War service of Francis Callaway, Jr.
Submitter: Betty Elofson
email: fnecpa at msn.com

Dear Donna,
As usual, I found the Callaway newsletter interesting.  When I went to see the status of the Joseph Callaway line, I found Francis Callaway with "service in the revolutionary war, part time, was stationed at Charleston , S.C."  I have the Charleston service info from the later Francis' autobiography written in the 1860's.  I have not been able to verify this revolutionary war service any place else.  Can you tell me the source for this info in the Joseph Callaway line through Francis?

Thank you for your help.
Betty Johnson Elofson

Editor's Note - Regarding the Rev War service of Francis Jr., the only place I have seen it mentioned in CFA records is the autobiography that Betty mentions, which was published in the 1981 CFA Journal. Can anyone give us source information for his service?

Donna,
I received the following e-mail from my "cousin" in Henry Co. GA. I responded that I was not familiar with these Callaways even though my Callaways came from Henry Co. Perhaps you can post this information in the next e-newsletter and someone will be able to identify them.
THANKS, Judy

Dear Judy, In looking for something else I ran across this, do we know how these Callaways fit into our picture?
Warmest regards,

CALLAWAY FAMILY CEMETERY, Henry County, GA

Surveyed:   November 5, 1932 GPS Location:N33º37.402W084º13.924

Copyright.  All rights reserved.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/copyright.htm

Introduction:

This cemetery is no longer in existence. It was originally located near the intersection of Panola Road and Fairfield Drive in Henry County, Georgia at the approximate GPS location shown above.

The original surveyor, Franklin Garrett, wrote in 1932: "Although known as the 'Callaway Cemetery', this old cemetery contains no inscribed Callaway markers.  There are five graves over which are erected elaborate wooden shelters.  They bear no names.  The entire cemetery area is a tangle of weeds and vines." He went on to record information on the two Lewis headstones.  Additional research* has suggested that the missing graves are those of the three Callaways indicated below.  Currently the area is residential.

Hi,

Jeremiah Gifford Callaway's second wife was Zula Mae Grey Wright.  She was the daughter of Joseph Tazwell Grey and Isabel Greene of Randolph County, Missouri.  Zula was first married to Welford Wright and had one son, Winston Churchill Wright.

Zula and Aubrey are buried in Englewood Cemetery in Clinton, Missouri.  The family home is still standing.
Aubrey was known as Buster.

Any chance that you might have run across the Elihu Greene Family bible that was in Zula Mae's possession back in the 1940's?

Michelle Greene

1851 Canadian Census Now Online -
The 1851 Canadian census covered Canada East, Canada West, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The National Archives of Canada has now announced that the 1851 census has been scanned and placed online. It is available at no charge at the National Archives' web site.

The online site allows researchers to search by geographic location only. As this is not a nominally-indexed database, it is not searchable by family name. The digital images within this database are copies of the original microfilm records held by Library and Archives Canada.

1851 Census images for New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are presented with the support of the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick [ http://archives.gnb.ca/Archives/Default.aspx?L=EN ] and the Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management [ http://www.gov.ns.ca/nsarm ].
