Hello All,
Editor’s note - I encourage each of
you to send in articles for the e-Newsletter. It doesn’t have to
be lengthy. It could be some "Callaway" news, a family story, a
family photo, a favorite family recipe, results from your family
line research, or any item you think would be of interest to our
readers. Send them to me, and I will take care of adding them.

We are getting closer and closer to making the connection across the pond! DNA UPDATE Confirmation has now been received that another proven descendant of the 1760 George Kellaway of Walworth UK is also a close match with all the descendants of the 1640 Peter of Maryland. I believe that when Peter was first discovered by Sherrill Williams and J. Hobart Bartlett before the CFA was even founded there were some doubts as to how his name was spelled. The illiteracy of the times coupled with accents made this understandable. That the C spelling became dominant in the US is a point of historical fact, however in genealogical research, misspellings must be carefully recorded particularly when origins are being sought. Though George of Walworth was a very wealthy London Builder, he chose to be buried in Dorchester, Dorset, the home of many Families of Kellaway whose origins can be traced to medieval and earlier times. Intensive English Research is now being conducted, as it has been for many years, to find Peter’s origins in the UK. BCC April 08
U. S. Joseph Callaway Line I would like to thank Gary Miller for sharing more information with us about the Callaway connection to Stephen Austin's Old Three Hundred. Donna - Thanks so much for the article on Mary Ann McFarland. Mary Ann is my Great Great Grandmother. This was the first picture I had ever seen of her so I was quite surprised and delighted to see her picture. I found the article very interesting. I can also provide you a little more on a further Callaway connection to the Austin Old 300. My Grandmother Corda Callaway was a direct descendent of two of the Austin Old 300 settlers. Corda was the daughter of Thomas Callaway and Leona May Brown. Thomas is the son of Francis Willis Callaway and Mary Ann McFarland. Leona May Brown is the great grand daughter of Old 300 settlers Zadock Woods and Sylvanus Castleman. Leona's mother was Amanda Woods. Amanda was the daughter of Montraville Woods and Maria Isabella Gonzales. Montraville is Zadock Woods son. Leona's father was Andrew Jackson Brown. Andrew was the son of Alexander Brown and Sarah Castleman. Sarah Castleman is the daughter of Sylvanus Castleman. The Castleman's and Woods both came to Texas from Missouri and took their land grants in present day Fayette County near La Grange. The Woods and Browns moved to DeWitt county in 1856 where Leona Brown met and married Thomas Callaway in 1872. Gary Miller Editor's Note - Additional information about the Callaway connection to the Old Three Hundred was published in the Oct 2005 Newsletter and the Apr 2008 Newsletter. Please welcome a new CFA
Newsletter subscriber, Ginger Hamilton. She has shared her
Calloway ancestry with us. Ginger's grandmother was Gertrude
Calloway from the following line of descent: Donna, Please sign me up for your newsletter. I would
appreciate it. I would like to thank Martha
Truax for generously sharing her memories of Charles
Clinton Callaway, who was her friend and neighbor when she was
a child in Eagle Rock, CA. Charles Clinton Callaway's line of
descent is as follows: Dear Callaway Family Association: Editor's Note - see additional information about Charles Clinton Callaway in the June 2008 CFA Newsletter. U. S. Peter Callaway Line I would like to thank Shirley Whipple of Spokane, WA for
sending me the link to the Southern Campaigns of the American
Revolution web site. Posted there now are over 3000 pension
applications which have been transcribed by volunteers. These
pension records hold a wealth of genealogy information. I am
including two applications in this month's newsletter. The
first is for Peter Callaway from the
following line of descent: Pension Application of Peter Callaway: W10564 On this twenty fourth day of March in the year eighteen hundred & thirty four personally appeared before the honorable Superior Court of said County, now sitting, Peter Callaway a resident in said County of Newton & State of Georgia aged Seventy five years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress, passed June 7 1832. That he was residing in Carteret County in the State of North Carolina when it was required that one man should be sent into the service of the United States from a specified number, and that a Major Eli West was one of the number who was required under that regulation to serve in the army of the United States for the term of nine months. That this deponent who was then acting as an overseer for said West went into the army of the United States from said County of Carteret N.C. in the nine months service as a substitute for said West in the summer of 1777 as well as deponent now recollects. The company was commanded by Captain William Dennis who deponent thinks was a Continental officer. That deponents company rendezvous at Beaufort in said County of Carteret. From thence he was marched to Newbern [sic: New Bern] in the County of Craven from thence to the town of Halifax on Roanoke river North Carolina. This deponent saith that after having served at least two month as a substitute & private as aforesaid he by consent of his officers enlisted with sixteen others under a recruiting officer who was called Captain to the best of deponents recollection was named Cassall Medicy [sic: probably Cosmo de Medici]. This deponent as well as he now recollects enlisted in the year 1777 at Halifax in the State of North Carolina in a company of horse for the term of three years as a private. One of the names of the sixteen who enlisted at the same time was Mosely – another was John Renn. That he was put under the Command of Edward Gamble [possibly Edmund Gamble] who was an Irishman by birth – Major Pinkney [Pinketham] Eaton (who was called Pink) Colonel [James] Armstrong. That some time after his enlistment he was marched with the army from Halifax to Purysburg on Savannah River in the State of South Carolina and there joined the army commanded by Gen Lincoln. Governor [John] Rutledge also was in Command at that place. deponent does not distinctly recollect the time he joined the army of Gen. Lincoln thinks it was in the first of the year 1779 [Gen. Benjamin Lincoln took command 3 Jan 1779] – he well remembers it was very cold wether while on his march from Halifax to Purysburg. This deponent was at Purysburg at the time of Gen. [John] Ashe’s defeat [Battle of Briar Creek GA, 3 Mar 1779]. Deponent was marched to different parts in South Carolina – once at Augusta in the State of Georgia – Charleston South Carolina. Deponent further saith that the company of horse to which he was attached usually accompanied Gen. Lincoln. he was not in the battle of Stono [Stono Ferry, 20 Jun 1779] but was near the engagement & near Gen Lincoln. deponent served out his full term of three years & was discharged at the ten mile house near Charleston. That he received an honorable discharge from under the hands of his Capt Gamble From thence he went to the County of Jones in North Carolina & in the year 1780 Volunteered in a company of militia infantry Commanded by Col Hill – Major James Pierce – Captain McDonald. Marched from Trenton North Carolina to Charleston South Carolina. Was in Charleston during the engagement at fort Moultrie [7 May 1780, nine days before the surrender of Charleston]. Gen. Lincoln commanded during this service. Deponent served three months and received a discharge at Charleston From thence deponent returned to his brothers in the County of Jones State of North Carolina. that in the year 1780 he volunteered for a three months tour in said County of Jones under Lieut Laurens[?] Lavender – Captain Simon Edwards. the company to which he was attached marched to the town of Kingston on Neus river [sic: Kinston on Neuse River] North Carolina there Governor or General [Richard] Caswell was in Command in Col. Caswels Regiment & Major Wise. From Kingston he was marched to Cross Creek or Fayetteville N.C. that he kept on the march until he joined the army of Gen. [Horatio] Gates. Deponent recollects it was very warm dry weather but has not a distinct recollection of the month. After joining Gates army he was marched to near Camden and was in the battle called Gates defeat [Battle of Camden, 16 Aug 1780]. Deponents Captain & Lieutenant were killed in this battle he also lost all his clothing & papers. also his discharge from his three years service. from Camden he was marched to Charlotte in North Carolina & from there to Hillsborough – at which place he received a discharge having served fully his three months tour. deponent does not recollect who signed his discharge. From thence he returned again to Jones County in the State of North Carolina. Some short time afterwards in the year 1780 deponent volunteered again for three months in said County of Jones – joined a company commanded by Captain Joseph Rhodes marched with Capt Rhodes Company to Wilmington North Carolina. Officers were Major Whitly – Col. [Waitstill] Avery & General [Alexander] Lillington Deponent was continued near Wilmington harrassing the British forces until his term of three months had expired – that he was marched up on Trent river & discharged about ten miles above Trenton in said County of Jones He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or an annuity, except the present and he declares that his name is not on the Pension Roll of any Agency in any State. Deponent further saith that he hath no other way to establish his service but by this his own oath except the testimony of Gen. David Blackshear & William Jones — which is annexed to this declaration that he knows of no other witness by whom he can prove his service or any part thereof. that he was born in Sussex County & State of Delaware on the 12th day of October 1758 – he has a record of his age made by his eldest sister in a prayer book which is now in deponents possession & that his sister has been dead for many years. Was residing in the County of Carteret State of North Carolina when he first went into the service. After the war deponent returned the place of his nativity & remained about three years. from thence he came to the State of Georgia first resided in the County of Green [sic: Greene] about four years – then in the County of Clark [sic: Clarke] nine or ten years – then in the County of Jasper for more than twenty years – then in the County of Newton where he now resides. Deponent served two months as private militia substitute for Eli West – served three years as a private in a company of horse & was regularly enlisted – and served three tours as a volunteer of three months each which makes the whole time of service at least three years & eleven months. Deponent has stated all the officers he now recollects. Deponent does not recollect by whom his discharges were given further than he has already stated. All his discharges have been for years lost or destroid – has no recollection of having seen any of them since the War. Jack Williams, Robert Leak, John Ross[?], Henry Gaither & the neighborhood generally where he resides will testify as to deponents veracity & their belief of his services as a soldier of the Revolution. [signed] Peter Callaway Editor's Note - Peter Callaway's pension application was approved and he received $30. a year for the rank of private, from 1833 until his death in 1835. On 8 May 1856 Elizabeth Callaway, 79 of Gordon County GA, applied for a pension and bounty land stating that as Elizabeth Wilson she married Peter Callaway 2 Jan 1792, and he died 20 Oct 1834. Elizabeth then received the pension until her death in 1868. The second pension

From the following obituary, we discover
new descendants from the Peter Callaway line that settled in New
Jersey. The census records were difficult to decipher, but I
believe that Denny W. Callaway's line of descent is as follows:
Denny W. Calloway Jr., age 64 passed on Dec. 11, 2007. Born and
raised in Camden, NJ he was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High
School in 1961 where he excelled in sports. A lineman during
high school football, he threw the 47 yard winning touchdown
during the Thanksgiving Game. He has lived in Clarksboro for the
past 24 years. Denny was a very successful Salesman for 25 years
and worked for Conolly/Calhoun (Bakemark) and recently Oteri¹s
Italian Bakery in Philadelphia. He was a member of Incarnation
Church in Mantua, the Hot Stovers¹ Baseball Club in Pennsauken
and was Vice President of the union for the G.B.B.A. Denny was
very athletic, loved sports and enjoyed traveling. I would like to thank Pam Drake who lives in Indiana, for sharing her Callaway family line with us. Pam descends from the Peter Callaway line through Jain Callaway with the following line of descent:
Peter Callaway My 4xgreat-grandparents were: Jain Callaway & Nehemiah Hearn. I don't know where or when she was born or who her parents & grandparents were. In the Hearn Book it said she died 16 Sept.1822 but not where. Her husband died 2 Oct.1815 in Little Creek Hundred, Sussex Co., DE. & is buried in Broad Creek Hundred, Laurel, DE. I descend through their son Daniel Hearn, Sr. born 22 April 1770 in either NC. or DE. They lived in both states. Daniel's wife was Elizabeth "Betsy" Wilson. I don't know anything about Betsy either but her name. I have a feeling he had a first wife though. Daniel & wife/wives had 15 children. I have further information down the line if you want it. Thanks for any help! Sincerely, Pam Drake in IN I would like to thank Judy Howe for

MICHELLE8 CALAWAY, b. Private. I would like to thank CFA Member, Bruce Callaway of Sydney, Australia for sending us these snippets from old newspapers on the Isle of Wight in England.
Hi Donna,
These extracts from old
Isle of Wight newspapers which come through regularly and
fill up my inbox, occasionally have an item relevant to the
Kellaways/Callaways who were ensconced on the Isle for many
centuries. The Freshwater article with the two Callaways was
of particular interest to me as I believe they were two of
my g.great Uncles, Daniel and Jacob.
Might be a story for the
Newsletter.
Kind wishes,
Bruce
21 Feb 1846 I would like to thank Kathleen Kallaway, who lives near Honiton in Devon, for sending us the following information about John Kallaway, born 1819 of Devon, England. Hello, John Kallaway born 1819 married Eliza, had son Henry born 1862. (Richard's direct ancestor) Also has son Charles born 1858.(Bovey Tracey) Charles married Clara from Chagford in 1881. They had son, Harold, born 1882 (Bovey Tracey). Later moved to Mutley Plain, Plymouth. In 1919 Harold with wife Evelyn, daughter Evelyn (10yrs) and son Clifford (7yrs) emigrated from Southampton to New York on ship The Adriatic. Arrived 17th Oct. 1919. Family processed through Ellis Island. John, Charles and Henry were all carpenters. John was also the Mill Wright at the mill in Bovey Tracey. We saw the Mill last Sunday. The building and wheel have been restored though the internal mill workings have gone. Quite impressive. Regards, Kathleen Editor's Note - Harold Kallaway and family are found in the following US census records: They are listed on the 1920 Missoula, Missoula Co., MT census. They are listed on the 1930 Portland, Multnomah Co., OR census. They also had a daughter, Adelaine, born about 1911. I would like to thank CFA Member, Bill Piper for sending us this 1802 news snippet about Naughty Mary. Trewman's Exeter Flying Post (Exeter, England) Thursday August 5, 1802; issue 2024.

Query # 478 I read with great interest the recollections written down by Melissa Grace Smith about her childhood among the Miami Indians in Indiana (her father was the pastor of the church on the reservation). I have two questions: (1) where might I find (or obtain a copy) of the original "recollection" or interview? (2) the minutes of the Indian Baptist church are referenced and I'd like to know where those original minutes are located. I thank you in advance for your help and eagerly anticipate your reply. P.S. I should have noted that the information I found on this site was listed as "Compiled by Lavedah Craw, with the help and input of Mr. Hattery and Madge Callaway Carvey. Mrs. Carvey contributed the DAR information and Lavedah Craw and Mr. Hattery corresponded for years about the family. Submitted to CFA by Peggy Hanes, April 2004." I would be happy for my contact information to be passed on to anyone of these individuals for assistance if they would be willing to contact me. Thanks again. Query # 479
My great grandfather was
Willis Calloway (Callaway?) Owens. I cannot find his parents
or other connections. He was born in 1811 in Cana, Jennings
County, IN, according to the best evidence I have. A person
of that name is also shown as having been born at that time
in Kentucky but I think this is a misstatement. Do you know
of any ancestral connection or information about Willis Call
("o" or "a") way Owens? He married Sarah M. Cox and had
children Delilah, Elizabeth, Mary, John, Sarah A., Charles,
Rebecca, Martha, William Jackson (my g grandfather), Enceba,
Euocma, and William Owens.
By the way, you have a
great newsletter and (apparently) a marvelous family
association.
Garry Owens Editor's Note - I wrote to Garry with the following information. Can anyone offer anything further to help his research? Hi
Garry, Query # 480 Any help? Editor's Note - Between the 1840 - 1870 census records, this family can be found in the Gloucester and Camden Co., NJ areas. Query # 481 My grandmother was Nell Grace Callaway, I am looking for a picture.
