THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION Volume III No. 5 BULLETIN BILL'S BLURB
Normally the Bulletin arrives
at your Inbox on the first of the month, but this time it is very
late due to the fact that I was away at the Spring CFA Board of
Directors meeting in Key West, FL on May 3 & 4. Since we were
going from one geographical extreme (North West) to the other
(South East), my wife, Rosemary, and I decided to make an 11 day
holiday out of it, travelling first to Atlanta, GA, then to
Orlando, FL and finally on to Key West, before flying home to
B.C. from Miami. A report on some of the items
on the agenda will occur later on in the Bulletin, but first of
all I want to thank Past President Victoria Jennings for hosting
the Board meeting in Key West where she and Peter have a second
home, which, due to their busy work schedules, they seldom have a
chance to visit. Key West is a fascinating place, with many
interesting historical buildings and fine restaurants. Although
everything was very pricey, we certainly enjoyed the stay
there. For Northwesterners like me, the climate in Florida took
some getting used to. Talk about hot! A COMMENTARY FROM 1ST VICE PRESIDENT GARY GARNETT
"CFA is international!
The CFA Board of Directors is very pleased that the Callaway Family Association has international interest and membership. In October 2000, Bill Callaway of British Columbia, Canada, became a member of the Board and hosted the CFA Board of Directors meeting in Victoria, B.C. in May 2001. Bruce Callaway of Australia has been active with the CFANET and recently helped test some new video communications technology over the internet. The international members offer new opportunities to trace the movement of ancient Callaways across the continents. This is exciting, and we want to encourage continued and growing interest of the international membership, along with our U.S. membership.
But we have encountered a problem that is not yet severe, but could become an obstacle to the growth of our international membership. The problem is that our annual membership fees are in U.S. dollars, and our long standing financial accounts are at a Federal Credit Union that charges the CFA no banking service fees, and pays higher yields on CDs, compared to most other federally insured institutions. This helps keep our cost, and subsequently our membership fees, as low as possible. But this institution has the drawback that it only accepts checks written on U.S. banks or a bank with an U.S. affiliate, which means that our international members need to obtain and send U.S. dollars, get an international money order, or do a wire transfer from their bank to the U.S. (which costs almost as much as the membership fees).
The Board understands the burden this presents to our international members. It is equally burdensome (and sometimes impossible) for the CFA to exchange international money. Since the last annual CFA meeting (in Richmond, VA), Heide Callaway has investigated options for how to minimize this burden, and these were presented and discussed at length during the May 2002 CFA Board meeting. The result is that we do not have any better solution that will be in place in 2002. However, the Board did develop a plan that will benefit all members, both international and United States members.
A team, led by Bill Callaway, will research the options for renewing membership electronically via the CFA web page with the use your Visa or MasterCard credit card. A report is expected by this October's CFA meeting in Baltimore, with plans to test this first with the selected U.S. membership, and then expand its use regionally until all members, including our international members, can use this method. Your financial security confidence in this system is key to its success.
Please be patient."
P.S. The other members of the "team" are: Treasurer Heide Callaway, Membership Secretary Judy Ostler, Assistant Secretary Martha Winkler, (the 3 Officers most involved in this change) plus Donna Morgan, the CFA Webmaster, and Geoff Callaway of Australia, both of whom have expertise in this field. Work on this project is already underway.
CFA GUEST BOOK
Speaking of our Webmaster, Donna has just revised the web page for the Guest Book on our web site: www.callawayfamily.org . Since Donna started it in June 2001, there have been over 80 entries. You can view these by going to the web site and clicking on Guest Book. You can then "View Archived Guest Book Entries" for Jan 13 - May 13, 2002 and for Jun 27 - Dec 22, 2001. You might find a family connection or someone you can help.
Before you finish using the web site, would you please take a moment to "Sign Guestbook". It would be great to see all of your comments. When you come to "How did you find us?" please check "Other".
This Bulletin is going to 338 CFA members and 47 non-members who have signed up to be on the CFANET e-mail list. What a pleasant surprise it would be to see another 385 entries in the Guest Book!
Of the 64 entries that gave "City/Country", 55 were from the USA (Texas leading the way with 12), 5 from England, 2 from Australia, and 1 from Canada. Also, one of the entries is from a person from Saipan (pop. 38,896), CNMI . After much searching in my World Atlas, I discovered that Saipan is the capital of the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands ( CNMI ). This string of 16 islands - some large, some small - forms a 500-mile-long arc in the western Pacific Ocean, north of Guam. It would be something to have a CFA member from that remote location, wouldn't it? Only 10 of the respondents were CFA members.
The participants were roughly half men and half women (that doesn't sound quite right), but the women had much more to say in the "Comments" section than the men. No comment! FLORIDA CFA PICNIC - JUNE 15, 2002 Our first Florida CFA picnic will be held at Fort Christmas, a replica of the fort built in 1837, a part of the long and bitter Seminole wars. The fort exhibits include maps, weapons, treaties, uniforms, and the recorded chant of a Seminole medicine man. We've reserved a covered pavilion from 10 am to 3 pm on Saturday, June 15th, for this traditional American picnic. Everyone is welcome. If any Callaway members who are planning to visit Florida at that time will let us know before the May 15th (?) RSVP deadline, they can join in the fun and help make this event a big success. Just bring picnic food and bottled drinks. Please contact: Elizabeth Grainger, E-mail: lizcg at msn.com CFA BOARD MEETING - MAY 3 & 4, 2002 As mentioned at the beginning of the Bulletin, the CFA Board of Directors met in Key West, FL earlier this month. Membership Report ( as of April 22, 2002 )
Judy Callaway presented her usual very comprehensive report on the membership of CFA.
The 2002 current membership was reported as 547 members (469 contacts + 72 spouses + 6 juniors). This is almost the same number as reported at the 2001 Board meeting.
There are: 342 Active Members (single contacts) 128 Joint Members (64 contacts x 2) 20 Supporting Members (14 contacts + 6 spouses) 51 Life Members (49 contacts + 2 spouses) 6 Junior Members
There were 498 Renewals, 22 New Members and 27 Reinstatements, for a total of 547. Of these, there were 17 International Members and 101 Charter Members.
Membership By States shows Georgia leading the way again with 76, followed closely by Texas with 73. Third was Florida with 51, then California with 37, and Tennessee with 28. The total number of members in those 5 states is 265, which is exactly half of the total US membership. The remaining 265 members are scattered amongst 39 other states.
The Research Report by Genealogist, Sherrill Williams, will be published in the 2002 Journal later this year.
The Technology Report by Technologist, Russ Callaway, will be carried forward to a future issue of the Bulletin.
CFANET BULLETIN SURVEY
As mentioned last month, a Survey has now been designed to provide your Co-Editors with some useful feedback regarding the Bulletin's delivery, format and contents. We first tested it on the Board of Directors, and we are now ready to send it to all recipients of CFANET BULLETIN.
It should take you only a few minutes to complete, so your cooperation would be most appreciated. All returned Surveys will be treated confidentially, and the results will be used only to improve future issues of the Bulletin. Look for the Survey in your Inbox sometime during the week of May 20th.
