The Callaway/Kellaway Family in Medieval Times

Some extraordinary things are happening in the research being conducted by our English Research Team. Our family beginnings are being documented back to Medieval Times. How many surname genealogy societies can say that? Very few, if any others, can say that! Take a stroll through 23 generations of our ancestors going back to 1000 A.D. You can view the genealogy report on our web site here. It is a remarkable accomplishment and an ongoing project. There will be many additions and probably some corrections as more information is gathered. It is a very exciting time for the Callaway Family Association! Here's a great big "HIP HIP HOORAY" to all those whose tireless efforts are building a picture of our family for us . . . and for all those who come after us.

Editor’s note - I encourage each of you to send in articles for the e-Newsletter. It doesn’t have to be lengthy. It could be some "Callaway" news, a family story, a family photo, a favorite family recipe, results from your family line research, or any item you think would be of interest to our readers. Send them to me, and I will take care of adding them.
I look forward to hearing from you.

In Memory

It is with sadness that we learned about the passing of CFA Member, Carmen Roetzel's father. Our thoughts and prayers are with Carmen and all of her family.

Donna,
I am sending sad news of the passing of my father and wanted to ask that you include this in the next newsletter. You put the information about my parents 50th anniversary in the August 2005 newsletter. We just got the diagnosis that he had cancer on the 27th of December, 2006. There just wasn't enough time to get over the diagnosis when we lost him. Many people that came to the visitation said that my dad never said an unkind word about anyone. He was a good man and he will be missed greatly.

Hunt Moore & Associates starting in 1952, first as a part time draftsman, then full time, and then moved into sales, where he became a Vice President. He remained in sales at N. Hunt Moore until the formation of the AZO Incorporated. Thorp was a key member of the start-up team when AZO Incorporated was formed in April of 1978 as a spin off of N. Hunt Moore & Associates. He served as Components Vice President/Sales Manager until his retirement in 1993. Thorp's engaging style and keen sense of humor made him a "salesman's salesman", and his many years of efforts are a key part of the success of AZO in North America. The Thorp Callaway Product Testing Center was named in Thorp's honor in 2003 on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of AZO, Inc. The family requests all memorials be sent to Underwood United Methodist Church.

Callaway Hospitality "Down Under"
Here's a happy family story about Jane & Gus Callaway's grandson, Graham, who made a trip to Australia. Thank you to Jane for sending it and the great photo.

Getting along WITHOUT Dr. Bruce Callaway -

I don't think this family of Callaways could.  In January I happened to notice something in the CFA newsletter queries that rang a bell.  Someone was looking for a family named Callaway; Gus, Jane, Randy, Jim and Kate. They had a photo taken at  Christmas time 1964.  That was/is us, my family of Callaways, but I didn't know what to do with it.  Austin (called Gus) was amazed and he didn't know either so he said. "Send it to Dr. Bruce.  He will know what and how to do the correct thing."  He also said, "And send it to the Newsletter Editor."  I had been corresponding with Bruce for several years about Austin's DNA and the very little I have on Austin's Callaways, but I never imagined any of the following.  Within the next 15 minutes I had a copy of the e-mail that Bruce sent to the Inquirer, and by the next morning, I was safely and soundly talking to the gentleman on the phone.  Maybe you read about it in the February Newsletter.  He had found a box weighing 12 pounds with letters and pictures dating back to 1898 all about MY MOTHER'S family and my mother.  (Needless to say, she nor I were/are Callaways except by marriage.)  But I was enthralled at all the trouble that this nice man had gone through to return these to the owners and or their family.  I was so grateful to him and to Bruce who had the magic key that opened the door.  I had no pictures of my mother as a young woman or child.  She died when she was 53 and I had very little knowledge about her youth and her family.  Just what I remembered listening to as I grew up.  Now I have pictures of her as a Newborn, clear down to my wedding.  Letters from my grandmother and grandfather, farmer's deeds, articles about them, et al.  It is just amazing and I will be eternally grateful to both gentlemen.  But there were no Callaways in any of them.

In the middle of the correspondence about these pictures I mentioned to Bruce that my Grandson Graham, who had graduated from the University of South Carolina in December, had been by to see us and announced out of the blue, "I am going to Australia."  We were excited for him.  It was something he had apparently always wanted to do and he had friends there as exchange students and so some place to stay once he got there. I just mentioned this to Bruce in an add on to something about the pictures, and he wrote back, "Have Graham call me if he gets here.  This is our phone number.  Maybe we can help steer him around and we would like to meet him".  We told Graham about this "lucky angel" we knew in Australia and gave him Bruce's e-mail and so began another tale when we couldn't have gotten by without Bruce Callaway.  At least this time it was about a fellow Callaway and not, Grays, Randles and Nowels.  He is, as I write this, on his way to Charlotte, where his Dad will pick him up and with great good luck, Austin and I will be able to see him after he sleeps off the jet-lag.  He said he took thousands of pictures and I can hardly wait to see them.  I have been in love with all things Australian ever since I discovered Neville Shute years ago and we knew some wonderful people from Australia during WW II. Graham and Bruce kept each other up to date by e-mail the three weeks Graham was "in country," and met the last day he was there and Bruce took him and all of his stuff (I can only imagine) to the airport so he would get on the right plane at the right time.  No mean feat with any of my grandchildren. Here's a picture of Graham and his friend Meredith at Bruce's & Dawn's house.

So this is to tell you all what a wonderful part of the CFA are Bruce and Dawn Callaway.  AND how thankful my Callaways are that we know them.

My father was approximately 13 months old in this picture.   The canal opened in 1914.

My grandparents were married on 1/23/1909 in Topeka, Ka. Bettie at this time joined Lawrence in Panama during the canal's construction. They lived in the Canal Zone until 1943.  Grandpa retired as chief of police and they moved to Long Beach California.

My great grand parents were Thomas M. Callaway (01/12/1846 - 02/11/1931 MO). Emma Barnhouse Callaway (05/31/1847 Baltimore, MD, 06/06/1913 Lexington, MO. Married 04/12/1877 in Lexington, MO. I would like to thank Gene Lierheimer for graciously sharing with us all of his hard work in researching the family line of Edmund Callaway. You can view his family file at Ancestry.com under Public Member Trees. Edmund Callaway's line of descent is as follows:
Joseph Callaway
James Callaway
Edmund Callaway
William Dudley Callaway

Thanks to immense help from Theresa Snyder and Julia Mortenson, I have now completed (more than) what I set out to do in tracing the descendents of Edmund Callaway in general and those of his son William Dudley Callaway in particular. I will still try to add anecdotes and other bits and pieces, including an email in draft about the civil war service of all six of William Dudley's sons. Otherwise I plan to move on to similar close attention to the Lierheimer, Erisman and Dehart lines of my ancestry.

If you wish to add to the callawayfamily.org listings, I think you might find the entries in my "Ralph Eugene Lierheimer tree" on ancestry.com of use. I have added numerous Callaways and descendents of Callaways--mostly with census or other verification.

In doing research on my Callaway line, I found that all six of my gggrandfather William Dudley Callaway's sons served in Illinois units of the Union Army during the Civil War. William Dudley (Edmund, James C., Joseph) had moved from Kentucky to Illinois shortly after the 1834 death of his first wife, Inez Barnard Callaway, and his subsequent marriage to Amanda Wigginton. By the early 1840's he had settled in a part of Sangamon County, Illinois (near Springfield) which then became Menard County. Abraham Lincoln's New Salem was about 10 miles southeast of William Dudley's farm near Sweetwater, and about 10 miles northeast of the Tallula, Illinois home of William Dudley's eldest son, Samuel Barnard Callaway and later home of Wm Dudley and Amanda. I have found no specific note of meetings between these Callaways and Lincoln, but given the proximity involved, and William Dudley being a staunch unionist, some connection seems likely.

William Dudley's sons, their military units, and later professions are:

Samuel Barnard Callaway: 114th Infantry Regiment, Illinois (Distinguished service.)
(Farmer - Menard County, Illinois)

James Edmund Callaway: 28th Illinois Volunteer Infantry
(Physician - Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri)

John William Callaway: 10th Illinois U.S. Cavalry
(Carpenter, builder - Menard County, Illinois)

Albert (Alfred) Lindsey Callaway: 14th Illinois Vol Inf Regt and 28th Illinois Vol Inf Regt (Albert L. "Tip" Callaway served more than five years. He stayed on until late 1866 for service on the Mexican border, and was brevetted a lieutenant after several years as a senior sergeant.)
(Farmer - Nodaway County, Missouri)

Charles Henry Callaway: 152nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry
(Took over Wm Dudley's wagon making business - Menard County, Illinois)

Seth Wigginton Callaway: 152nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry
(Took over Wm Dudley's farming activity - Menard County, Illinois)

In addition to his sons, at least two of William Dudley's nephews served in Illinois units of the Union Army:

James Edmund Callaway (son of Wm Dudley's brother Samuel Taylor Callaway): This one of two James Edmund Callaway cousins in his generation became a major during the Civil war, and later was a member of the Montana Supreme Court.

Chauncey Callaway (son of Wm Dudley's brother John Chesley Callaway) later became a rancher in Colorado and Nebraska. (My grandfather, Albert Lindsey's son Chauncey, was obviously named after this older cousin.)

Further, at least one nephew of William Dudley served the Confederacy:

James Edward Payne (son of Mary Ann Callaway Payne O'Bannon) was a captain in the 10th Missouri Volunteer Infantry of the Confederate Army. Interestingly, James Edward later served as a senior officer in the Union Army during the Spanish American War.

Also of interest is that John William Callaway was captured in Arkansas by Confederate forces, which might have included the 10th Missouri Volunteers. John William was reportedly marched without shoes for some 40 miles after his capture--and never fully recovered from the resulting injuries.

Yours,
Gene Lierheimer

Please welcome new CFA newsletter subscriber, Cheryl Peet. I would like to thank her for sharing information about her Callaway ancestry. It is a wonderful story of one of our "Callaway women".

Donna,

Thank you for your prompt response to my newsletter subscription, and for your interest in my history.
My grandmother was Zelna Elby Callaway (1903-1972), a great, great grand-daughter of Joseph Callaway.
She and my grandfather, Charles W. Rhoden, lived in Whittier, CA until she passed away, after which my grandfather came to live with us for a time.
Although I was only six years old when my grandmother Zelna passed away, I can still remember her vividly.  I was her first grandchild, and because she often called me "sweetheart" when I was learning to speak, I began calling her "Sweetheart".  She was thereafter known as "Sweetheart" by all of my family members and siblings yet to come.  I still remember her sweet personality and her sense of style.  She always wore the most striking "sparkly" pins and earrings, along with hats, and other things that made her stand out.  My grandfather Charles became my closest friend growing up, and before he passed away, he gave my grandmother's "sparkly" pins and jewelry to me because he knew they were what I most remembered of her.
My first memory of 'The Callaways' was of being at a reunion of some sort near Anaheim, CA when I was about seven years old. A man walked up to me and asked if I was a Callaway.  Puzzled, I just looked and him and replied "huh?"   My embarrassed father immediately informed me that although my last name was not Callaway, I was still a Callaway.
Not too long ago, I began doing my genealogy, and I stumbled upon the CFA web-site.  I remembered years ago when my aunt, Alta (Callaway) Lay, told me about her visit to the Callaway Gardens. Your website brought back some fond memories, and I realized that there was probably a lot that I did not know about the Callaways, so I decided to subscribe to your newsletter.

Again, thank you for your interest.

Everyone please welcome new CFA Member Milicent Remy, of Apalachicola, Florida.

Hi there!
I was delighted to find the CALLAWAY info on your site as well as on Rootsweb. I am just beginning (as of this last year) to work on my maternal line, & found on a search a Rootsweb entry on my great grandfather,  Wm. Lawrence Lott, who connects to the Peter Callaway line thru Pheraby Callaway.

I do NOT yet unfortunately have a formal submission, but would like to provide the following added info to what CFA has put out on Rootsweb related to the following line; and then provide late this year or next year, a proper gedcom file:

my line is (thnx to your assoc.'s research!):
Peter Callaway (md) > John Callaway (md) > Edw Callaway (md/nc) > John Callaway (md/ga) >
Pheraby Callaway (ga) > Lydia Strozier (ga) > Lucy (Lucinda?) Ann Philips (ga) > Effie Vandalia Embry (ga) >
William Lawrence Lott > Louise Embry Lott > Eleanor Stevens McMichael > Helena Melicent Remy (nee 'Reamy')

The additional info, from the 'Lott family bible' started by my great grandmother, Effie Vandalia Embry, is:

Effie Vandalia Embry Lott: your birth & death info confirmed; m. Wm Lawrence Lott 14 Oct. 1885, Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA

Wm Lawrence Lott: birth info confirmed; d. 30 Aug 1937, Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA
children by Effie Embry:
Louise Embry Lott, correction: b. 26 jul 1886; m. Dr. Jack Richard McMichael, 14 Jan 1908,
Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA; confirm d. as 26 Aug 1970, Quitman, Brooks Co., GA; interred Lynwood
        Cemetery, Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA;

Effie Alcine Lott, b. 6 Jul 1888, Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA; m. Ralph W. Edge, 29 Nov. 1910, Columbus,
Muscogee Co., GA; d. > 1950 (will research & later supply)

I hope supplying this info this way is not too inconvenient; I thought it better to now provide it, rather than wait a year or more!  Yes, I will be joining your fantastic organization, and ordering the family history CD.
Thanks so much,

I would like to thank Jane Callaway for sending us information on what they know about her husband, Austin Callaway's ancestors.

Donna: What you never really needed to know about the Christopher Callaway Line..... I have to Copy this into an e-mail because I am so old I still use, and like, Microsoft Works.  Okay, here goes.  If it doesn't come through, let me know.

These are pictures of Austin’s Great Grandfather Frederick Christopher Callaway and his wife Electra McDougal, both born in 1810 and most probably married in Newark, New Jersey  He died in 1899 and is buried in Newark.

The pictures are miniatures, done in color and they are in their original frames of tiger maple.

They were painted by Electra’s brother J (we think for John, but maybe James) A. McDougal.  He was a well known painter and furniture designer of that time.  There was a General John A. McDougal, of New York, who was a hero of the American Revolution and the person that McDougal’s Alley in the Village in Manhattan was named for. (That’s not REALLY a sentence?)  He is a g-g-grandfather (?) of Electra. There was a brother
of Electra, named Hugh who was a writer and had a column in the Newark paper and wrote a few books, collections of humorous “life and times” essays I think.

Frederick Christopher’s father was Christopher Dix Callaway.  He was one of five brothers, Thomas, William, John, and Samuel. Thomas, the oldest brother had three children, Thomas, George and Elizabeth.  I believe that these children were all born in England and came to this country with their father, Christopher Callaway, while still young children. I think he came to this country about 1756. but we have no documented history of these ancestors of my husband, only some very sketchy notes written by his Aunt G. Edna Callaway.

Christopher Dix Callaway married Ann Scaulding, but where or when we don’t know.  (I believe Bruce Callaway has a little something more concrete, but this past 14 - 15 months have been too hectic for me to
even file correctly that letter, much less enter it into my computer.)

Frederick and Electra had four children -- Frederick Henderson born May 14, 1810, died July 8, 1899, Thomas, Charles and Edna.  He married again after Electra died, an Elizabeth Peckwell, and they had twins
born in 1861 and who died before the 1870 census.  Probably before they were a year old.  It is an odds on that the twins were preemies. It is also odds on that they did not live long.  It was not the times for Preemies nor twins.

Bruce Callaway said he found Frederick and Elizabeth, and Frederick’s oldest son, alive and living in Newark in the 1860 census.  (Bruce that is from memory, hope I remembered correctly.)  At that time he stated that his job, (craft?) was working in a blinds factory.  This ties, somewhat, into the family story whereby he owned a woodworking factory, where he made, mantles, doors and lintels, windows and frames, blinds and other wooden things for the house i.e. moldings and handrails, etc.  We have some of his huge tools, such as bench planes, wooden mallets.  They are marked FCCo.  Frederick Callaway Company. We have a grandson, Keefe Austin Callaway, who will graduate from Brevard College this Spring and he is very proud to be a Master Carpenter. He has one of the planes on his mantle.

Frederick Henderson Callaway the oldest son of Frederick Christopher was married to a woman named Worn.  They had one son, Frederick Worn Callaway and when the mother died, Frederick left him with his maternal Grandparents in what is now Montclair, New Jersey.  He would have been my father-in-laws half brother, but no one ever mentioned him except for Aunt Edna.  The Westfield family knew nothing about him or what happened to him. Frederick Christopher, (10/2/1841 -- 7/8/1899) ventured forth and met Margaret Aymar Scudder, (April 4, 1850 -- December 10, 1923) of Newark and Westfield, New Jersey.  They married and had Four Children:
  Gussie Edna Callaway, October 20, 1875, -- December 10, 1923.)
Percival Aymar Callaway (1877 -- 1962) married Emma Brown.
Elizabeth Scudder Callaway, (February 10, 1881 -- March 3, 1973) Spouse Charles Dyer Fox
Guy Mulford Callaway, (January 16, 1887 -- 1970 Married Catherine Bernice Cannon January 17, 1923. Catherine was born in Manhattan January 27, 1898 and died in Darien, CT November 21, 1972.
They had three children:
Austin Scudder Callaway married Jane Gray. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
Margaret Bernice Callaway married Alfred Avison.  Al died in about 1980. They have two children and four grandchildren.
   Robert Guy Callaway

As you can see I came up (or do you say down) my husbands branch of the tree.  I think it is interesting that my father-in-law spoke about his family when he was young and that his father was musical and played the
flute. (The  family only story goes that this grandfather sort of fiddled and fluted his way through life and completely missed the Industrial Revolution.  His wife’s family, the Scudders were huge land owners and first families of New Jersey)  Dad Callaway played the “fiddle” and could pick out any tune on just about anything you handed him.  Music was not his main nor only talent. He was an artist, a painter and had studios in Westfield and New York.  The New York “office” was given over to package design for some of the huge
companies of his time.  (He did all of the packaging for Colgate, The Girl Scout cookies, and several others for years.)  He did this so that when he was home in Westfield he could paint what ever and whenever he wanted.  He was a most debonair man, very clever, a great writer, (he used to illustrate his letters), and a hard worker, a man set in his ways.  I think of him as the ultimate gentleman. Today we would say he was an anomaly.  His daughter Margaret was/is very artistic and married an artist and they took over Dad’s New York Office when he retired.  My in-laws moved from Westfield to Rowayton, CT, next door to their daughter in Darien, and Dad set about painting his first love, the sea, it’s beaches and the boats he sailed in all of his life.  He began to
learn some new ideas from his son-in-law and had a showing of his work at the age of 80 in Westport.

My husband, Austin Scudder Callaway, also can draw very well.  When the children were small they would go to him and ask him to draw them a horse, for instance.  Austin would draw the finish at the Kentucky Derby.  It was most embarrassing because I could not even draw a stick horse.  He also used this talent in the apparel and sportswear industry by designing things for the different lines by himself when he could not make the designers he had, understand what he wanted.  He also designed a lot of the packaging, and used our daughter as a model for the little girls things that he designed.  She used to get a big kick out of that.  It is too bad that he could not design a way to keep the textile business in the States.

Query # 409
Subject – Mary Lavinia Callaway
Submitter - Nathan White
email - whiten at prodigy.net

Mrs. Morgan:
I am Nathan White, husband of Wanda Cason White, a descendant of the Callaways, Bramletts, etc. of Georgia. I talked to Sam Geer tonight and he gave me your E-mail address and suggested I E-mail you. Wanda is applying for membership in the Jamestowne Society  and we are looking for documentary proof of the following: The information available to us suggests that Hugh Alvin Bramlett is the son of John Bramlett (b. 1785) and Mary Levinia Callaway (b.1796). She is of the Peter Callaway line and is the daughter of Jacob and Lucy Parker Callaway. What proof do we (you) have that Hugh Alvin is the son of John and Levinia Bramlett?   We are interested in joining the Callaway Family Association as well. Thank you very much.

Query # 410
Subject -
James Walter Callaway
Submitter - Bud Keeton
email - budkeeton at sbcglobal.net

Donna,

Thank you for the inclusion of my information in the March 2007 CFA newsletter, I very much appreciate it.

I now regret not answering your email promptly, it is still in my active list for response. Actually I do have further information on this line, though some of the specific deed details (b/p and actual property location) are misplaced in my files.

I have put equal effort into proving James Walter is not the son of Chesley Jr. and I cannot. The evidence against this relationship is Chesley Jr's will, I am told, does not mention James Walter, though, I am told, it does not mention most of his surviving children. (I would love to have a copy/transcription of this) The only other evidence against this relationship is Beverly Harvey's (husband of Mary Elizabeth Callaway and Chesley's son in law) family bible, which was quite detailed, I am told (I would love to have a copy/transcription of this too), and does not mention James Walter.

To connect James Walter to Chesley I have James Walter listed in 1850 census in household adjoining Chesley's widow and remaining children this is less than 2 years after Chesley's death. In the 1860 census James Walter had a son named Chesley 10 years old (this Chesley who would have been born about 1850 is the first male born to James Walter after Chesley Jr's death) it is certainly reasonable to name your next son after your recently deceased father. These facts obviously indicate a very close relationship to Chesley Jr.. This cannot be the James, son of Zachariah who married Eliza Holcomb as they show up in the same census years in another household. I can find no other possibilities.

There is a deed dated 29 May 1852 (recorded 27 Sep 1853) from Stephen Callaway & his wife Elizabeth to James W Callaway, this deed refers to another deed dated 22 Mar 1852 from Andrew Callaway to Stephen & Elizabeth. This set of transactions within a couple years of Chesley Jr.'s death again indicate a close relationship between the three (son's of Chesley Jr.) (Note: there is another deed dated 18 Aug 1848 to James Callaway from A Presley, this is within a few days of Chesley's death [Aug 1848] though may be unrelated - Another deed dated 12 May 1850 to Andrew Callaway from William Knox)

I would like to find further evidence, if not conclusive proof, that James Walter is indeed the son of Chesley Jr.. Or I would like to compile any further evidence to the contrary.

Thanks again
Bud Keeton

One Jesse Callaway or Two?

Donna, in 1999 I printed a list of War 1812 from Family Tree Research center which listed
JESSE CALLAWAY  4th Regiment (Booth's) Georgia Militia
JESSE CALLAWAY  5th  Regiment Delaware Militia

Were there really two Jesse's or could one have fought his way to DE & re-enlisted in DE or vice-versa?

I didn't find  another Jesse in any of my collection!
Peggy

Editor's Note - Also listed in 4 Regiment (Booth's), Georgia Militia is a James Callaway, and in 5 Regiment Delaware Militia is a Joseph Callaway.

I am a descendent of J.B. Callaway through Levi Gaines Callaway mentioned in the answer to Query #278 in the newsletter of July 2005. The answer was supplied by Judy Ostler. Wondering where she found the information on the birth date of J.B. Callaway and maiden name of Eliza. They are buried at Mt. Carmel Methodist Church Cemetery in Henry County, GA along with many relatives.

If it helps my Nan and Grandad are called Gerald and Kathleen Callaway? I would be grateful for any help you may provide. Yours Sincerely, Stephanie Callaway

I have recently completed The History of the First Baptist Church of Weogufka which was established on land provided by (William) Benjamin Callaway. I look forward to hearing from some of you.  Callaway ancestors were instrumental in the founding of the church and the continued operation even today. Anyone liking a copy may have it by sending me their mailing address and a check for 45 dollars. This is for copy, bind, postage, and 10 dollars for the church.

Query # 416
Subject -
The old Calloway house in Spangle, WA
Submitter - Shirley Whipple

Hi Donna,

I wrote last month about the Callaway place at Spangle. Here is part of an old letter written by an elderly woman who's father once lived in that house and who was a nephew to a James Callaway. Maybe someone who knows how to look up patents can find the patent mentioned in this letter.

I think the letter was dated 1994. I wrote to the nursing home to see if Thelma (Timmi) was still living and they never responded. She would have been Jim Callaway's great niece and she didn't even know he was related to her. They didn't have the advantage of computers, but she did know he was related somehow and that tells me that the story of Nathan living there was probably a true story as well. I wrote you about that some time back (December 2005 Newsletter). No one has responded so far but there are still some of the old timers around. Maybe they will have an idea. Thanks for answering.

"I always thought that Calloway was relation to my dad's first wife, Katy Brown. The old Calloway house is close to Spangle. Their son, I think his name was Jim, he lived there after his parent's died. He patented a beautiful gate. I use to like to go by there just to see that gate."

Donna, the land where this farm she mentions was listed on an old plat map as belonging to J.C. or J.D. or J.O. Callaway. The middle initial is hard to read.

Do you have any idea how to find out about an old patent?
Thanks,
Shirley

Sights to see in Atlanta-
It could be argued that the history of Atlanta began at Fort Peachtree, where Peachtree Creek flows into the Chattahoochee River.

Way back when this point was the borderline between the Creek Indian lands to the south and Cherokee territories to the north, there stood a large peach tree (or, depending on who you listen to, it may have been some sort of pine, or "pitch" tree.) The tree gave the name to the nearby creek, which in turn gave the name to the main Indian trail in the area, and from that, the street, and so on.

And on this spot in 1814, the Americans built Fort Peachtree to watch over the neighborhood (and maybe also the tribes) during the War of 1812. (The fort in the picture is a latter-day recreation constructed by the Water Department, which today operates a water quality monitoring station on the site.)

Later, this spot was briefly chosen as the location where the railroads would come together to form the city of Atlanta. But later, possibly because rivers and train tracks all coming together in one place would promise too confusing, they decided to locate the terminus several miles to the east.
