Abraham Callaway is mentioned as cousin and executor in the will of William Price of Sussex Co., DE dated May 1, 1792. This is a clue to his possible identity, because Samuel Callaway (Peter, Jr., Peter Callaway) was married to Mary Price. Could Abraham be the son of Samuel Callaway? Can anyone identify Abraham Callaway? He is a "Mystery Callaway".

DAR Members Dedicate Markers at Graves of Revolutionary Soldiers

On Veteran's Day, November 11, members of the Christopher Harrison Chapter D.A.R. dedicated markers at the graves of two Revolutionary War soldiers. Dedication ceremonies were conducted at the grave of John Holler, Jr. at the Prowsville Cemetery and at the grave of Micajah Calloway at the Peugh Cemetery. The markers were provided by the United States government.

The ceremonies were conducted to honor these two soldiers and all soldiers of the Revolutionary War.

Micajah Callaway
According to a descendant, Sharon Lachenmyer, Micajah Callaway was a gregarious soul with the determination and the perseverance to overcome all the obstacles that fate set in his path.

Already recognized as an expert woodsman at age 22, he eagerly joined his brothers in Botentort County, Virginia when that colony's assembly authorized the formation of a military company to aid the fledgling Kentucky settlement at Boonesborough.

Micajah helped defend the community against British-inspired Inidan attack during the winter of 1777. In January of 1778 he joined 29 other men in gathering salt, a desperately needed substance by the community. On January 8, 1778, during a blizzard, Micajah and 27 other men were captured and forced to march to the Chilicoate (Indian) towns across the frozen Kentucky and Ohio ground.

Micajah was one of the men, improperly shod, who walked barefoot upon the snow-covered ground. Thus began the five years and five months of captivity as alluded to on his tombstone.

During the peace treaty negotiations along the frontier in 1783, at age 27, Micajah was "compelled" by the Indians to act as their interpreter during the sessions. General George Rogers Clark was instrumental in obtaining Micajah's freedom when the Indians wanted him to return with them, insisting he was not part of the prisoner of war exchange group.

Micajah served our fledgling country several times as an interpreter, scout and  volunteer throughout his life. He was loyal to his country always, refusing British offers of freedom from his captors if he would guide them to Boonesborough.

Micajah first came to the Salem area in 1803, when he and his oung family took part in the second Daniel Boone migration group from Kentucky to the Femme Osage district of the then Spanish Territory of Missouri.

Losing his wife and an infant daughter to malaria, Micajah walked all the way back to "healthy ol' Kentuck" beside his two young sons, who were astride his horse in buffalo panniers.

Micajah, now remarried with more sons and daughters, returned with friends in 1809 to settle on a knob of hills near Salem where he lived for the next forty years.

Always willing to help his friends and neighbors, to serve his country as an interpreter and scout, Micajah was a typical man of his era.

Micajah's feet suffered terribly during his latter years (as a result of his Indian captivity) and he could always be found wearing moccasins instead of the boots worn then.

He received a pension in 1832 for his services in the Revolutionary War. He spent the latter 40 years of his 94 years telling the fascinating stories of his experiences, homesteading his land, and shooting at the abundant wild turkeys from his cabin window (which his grandchildren had to fetch), providing for his family  always.

Micajah's life is detailed in The Centennial History of Washington County, published in 1916 by Mr. Stevens. He died in 1849.

Born on Sept. 18, 1916, in Albany, N.Y., he was the son of the late George W. and Ella C. (Hann) Callaway. George was raised in Bloomfield, Conn., where he graduated from high school. He continued his education at Cornell University, where he received a degree in botany in 1941. He married the late Helen (Gledhill) Callaway in 1941.

George began his professional career as a science teacher and taught at Argyle Central School. In 1952 he started his own tree, crop, and farm animal care business while still teaching school. He eventually left teaching in 1956 to pursue arboriculture as a full-time career as operator/owner of Llenroc Tree Experts. George continued taking care of trees well into his 80s!

George was a Scout leader for the West Hebron Scout Troup during the 1960s. He was a dedicated and perpetual student of natural history and instilled in all who knew him a wonder, awe and respect for science and the natural world. A prolific hiker, he often shared this knowledge on his many Adirondack adventures with those willing to join him and learn.

Besides his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his daughter, Sandra Ferguson, and his sister, Vesta Walters.

Survivors include his daughter, Alice Woods and her husband, Thomas, of Oak Ridge, N.C.; his son, John Callaway and his wife, Norma, of Triangle, Va.; his grandchildren of daughter, Sandra: Brian, Diane, David and Hue; his grandchildren of daughter, Alice: Carisa Woods-Gerber and her husband, Jeff, Jeffrey Woods; his grandchildren of son, John: Melissa, Micajah, and Annelen; his great- grandchildren, James Ferguson; Crystal, Cheryl, and Timothy Nyguen; Tela, Elyse, and Matthew Gerber; and niece, Pam Keller of Baltimore, Md.

Hello I found this site at Rootsweb.

My name is Penny Goodwin. My husband is Eric Goodwin, son of Margaret Nell Miller Goodwin who is the daughter of Orville Delno Miller and Marjorie Lee Miller. First of all I want to thank you very much for putting your information on the web because we have spent considerable amount of time on the wrong path with another Orville Miller born in 1903 in Greene County, Indiana.

I am afraid that we have very little information past our immediate family, however we are more than happy to share it with anyone who wishes to have it.  And I would really love to have any information on siblings you have available along this line, whether directly or sideways.

Thank you Donna for getting back with me.  My husband's Great Grandmother was Maggie Callaway so this was a huge help. Maggie was Orville Miller's mother. :-)

Thank you for your time,
Penny Goodwin

Jim Bellamy has kindly shared with us some new information he has discovered.
James J. Callaway's line of descent is as follows:
Joseph Callaway
James Callaway
James Callaway, Jr.
Ambrose Callaway
James J. Callaway

While doing some research, I stumbled upon the James J Callaway family.  I was searching the marriage records for Dallas County when I came across a marriage between Laura B Callaway and Joseph W Frost on 2 Nov 1865 recorded in Book C.  However, the item that really got me interested is that the ceremony was conducted by James R Jeffries.  That stimulated my pea brain into action.  I thought, “Didn’t Elizabeth Jefferies have a half brother named James R?  And wasn’t her father a Baptist Minister?  Also, didn’t Samuel Boone Callaway have a brother named James who also came to Texas?”

So, I began to search the census.  I found James J Callaway in District 15 of the 1850 census for Carroll County, Missouri.  He was listed as 26 years old with wife Ann, also 26 years old, from Virginia and daughter Laura, age 1.  James is family 717.  Family 713 is Elijah Jefferies, Baptist Minister. Listed in Elijah’s family is Elizabeth R, age 11.  On the previous page, family 709 is James R Jefferies.

I have been unable to locate James Callaway in the 1860 census, but in 1870 they are living in Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas.  The family is listed as:
J J Callaway           M            45            Missouri
Ann Louisa              F             45            Virginia
Mary S                    F            19            Missouri
E H                         F            15            Missouri
L A                         F            13            Texas
Hugh                      M            11            Texas
Also living in Fort Smith, Arkansas are J W and Laura Frost with children Alice, age 3, born in Texas and Charles, age 1, born in Arkansas.

J W and Laura Frost appear in the 1880 census for Eastland County, Texas.  Listed with them are children:  Allis, age 13, born in Texas; Romie, age 8, born in Arkansas; Ednie, age 6, born in Texas; Annie, age 3, born in Texas; and J W, age 4 months, born February in Texas.

The only other family members I have located in the 1880 census are Ann and Lucy Callaway. Ann Caloway appears in the 1880 census for Dallas County, Texas, age 5?, born in Virginia. She is the housekeeper for Lawrence W Johnson, family 381.  Ann is listed as a widow.  Also listed is Lucy Caloway, age 21, born in Texas.  Lucy listed her father’s birthplace as Missouri and her mother’s as Virginia.  Samuel Boone and Rachel Caloway are listed on the following page of the census.

Widower, Joseph Frost is listed in the 1900 census for Sacramento County, California.  He indicated that he was born May 1842 in Missouri.  He is listed as father-in-law in the household of John and Roma Thompson.  Roma indicated that she was born in May 1872 in Texas. Also living in the household are:
Charles Hildebrand          Brother-in-law                     Apr 1872            Nebraska
Annie                               Sister-in-law                        June 1877          Texas
Emma Frost                      Sister-in-law                        Apr 1883           Texas

Further, I have found in the California Death Records for Alice Melvin (13 Nov 1866 – 14 Feb 1941).  This record indicates that Alice was born in Texas and her father was named Frost and her mother was named Callaway

Also listed in the California Death Records is Roma Thompson, born 10 Aug 1872 in Arkansas and died 12 May 1948 in Los Angeles County, California.  Roma’s parents are listed as Frost and Calloway.

And that is about it for now.  So once again, I have created more questions than answers, but at least now we have a starting point.  I am very interested in your opinion and comments.  I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks.

I was pleasantly surprised to see my ancestors and all the information you have compiled!!  I have two old photos of Grace, one of her husband James and several of there children if you are interested? I have been looking for old photo's of my ancestors and I found one today on your site. I would be happy to share what I have. I do not have a way to scan them to send at the moment but I will get a scanner this week. I also have some info on Grace's death date 3/10/1931 age 41.  Her husband James Vanderport died 2/6/1934 age 57, both died in Superior, WI. They had three sons James Clyde (Bud) born 1913, Russell (Mac) born 1918, Frank born 1925. I have just started tracing my family history and I do not have software yet to org. the info. I can type it up though if you would like to add it to the web site? I plan on joining the assoc. and look forward to studying the history.  Hope to hear from you!

I would like to thank Revis Cauble Leonard for the nice compliment about the newsletter, and for sending us the following family news.

Donna, thanks once again for the great newsletter.  I was surprised to see that Verna Henry Tuckness from Uvalde was a Callaway as I read her obituary.  I live in Uvalde, Texas, too.

If there are any descendants of David Callaway (b. 1779-Montgomery Co., NC; d. 31 Aug 1844, Colorado Co. TX) and Judith Tillery (b. abt. 1780-Stokes Co., NC; d. 1869-Gonzales Co., TX), or their children, esp. daughter Jerusha Emily Callaway (b. 1814-Telfair C., GA, d. Feb 1883-Gonzales Co., TX), my gr-gr-gr-grandmother, who married William Henry Harrison Baldridge of Gonzales Co., TX, I would like them to contact me.  I would love to have copies of any pictures that anyone has on these families, including Jerusha's siblings and/or the Baldridge kids.

Jerusha Emily Callaway was the second wife of William Henry Harrison Baldridge, whose mother was a Zumwalt from Gonzales County, Texas.  W.H.H.'s first wife was Sarah Kent Dillard (his 1st cousin), daughter of Alamo defender, Andrew Kent.  Andrew Kent's wife was a Zumwalt and a sister to W.H.H.'s mother.  Sarah Kent Dillard died in childbirth and W.H.H. Baldridge then married Jerusha Emily Callaway.  The Kent/Zumwalt's etc say that W.H.H. gave Sarah some kind of "herb" that resulted in her dying in childbirth, and that he did not take "proper care" of her little girl (by the Dillard husband) so the Kent family raised the child.  W.H.H. Baldridge was also the first appointed executor of Andrew Kent's will after Kent died at the Alamo.

Jerusha Emily Callaway and husband W.H.H. Baldridge are the parents of my gr-gr-grandfather, John David Baldridge, a/k/a "Jasper" (in the family bible of James Campbell Stroud of Medina County, Texas).   John David Baldridge had 4 wives; I descend from 2nd wife, Jemima Elizabeth Stroud, through their daughter, Nina Ada Baldridge and Oran Martin Dennis.

I will gladly pay for copying of any pictures that can be found of these family members.  The home that my Mother grew up in Roby, Fisher Co., Texas, burned up when she was a child.  All pictures and other momentos were lost, including the rifle that had been John David Baldridge's.  Unfortunately other pictures that might have been in the possession of my grandfather in San Angelo, Texas, seem to have disappeared...probably thrown away by family members.  My Mother made a mistake by not taking family heirlooms, etc. from her Father when he tried to give them to her several years before his death.

I also wanted to let anyone out of Jerusha and W.H.H.'s line know that on June 17 the Andrew Kent Muster will be held in Gonzales, Texas.  This family reunion includes all extended families, as I'm told, and I have been invited to go.

I have been in the process of studying for certification tests with regard to work, and I'll be finished with that in March.  Hopefully then I can get back to doing genealogy!

Oh, I also wanted to note if anyone travels off of I-10 from San Antonio to Houston that in the little town of Waelder, Gonzales County, Texas, the home of of these families is being remodeled.  I will go by there for sure in June when I head to Gonzales to the Andrew Kent Muster.

I had a very nice note from David White who is researching the family line of Annie Urania Callaway and William Henry Pope. Annie descends from the following Callaway line:
Peter Callaway
John Callaway
Edward Callaway
Job Callaway, Sr.
Isaac Callaway
Urania Callaway

Donna,

I expect that you already have all the information about the Callaways and their interactions with Henry Pope, but I'll give you the main things I have.  I found in the estate records in Wilkes County, Georgia that in 1822 Henry Pope (Urania Callaway's husband) received 200 acres and slaves from the estate of Isaac Callaway.  On Jan 12, 1824, Henry Pope was appointed guardian of Mary Ann and Martha Henrietta Callaway at the request of their former guardian, Winnifred Callaway, Mother of Annie Urania Callaway Pope.

The 1830 Census of Wilkes County, Georgia, shows Henry Pope and Urania Callaway.

The 1850 Census for Athens, Clark County, Georgia, page 34, has Urania Callaway Pope, age 50, as the head of the household.  She was born in Georgia.  Children listed include William H (28), Mary (17), Chandler M. (16), Sarah (14) and Celestia (11 - notice different spelling from your website).  Eleven other people are listed as living in the house as students.  In another record, Henry was reported to have died while visiting the home of Judge D.A. Vason (Husband of two of his daughters at different times), in Albany, Ga, in 1838 or 1840.  My cousin who researched Henry Pope, over 40 years ago, had his death as 1838.  His being missing from the 1840 census probably confirms his death in 1840 or before.

Some additional information I have been provided:  I had one other child of Urania and Henry Pope identified as Tabitha Catherine "Keddy" Pope, b. unknown, d. abt 1838 in Mallorysville, Wilkes County, Georgia.  She married a William Thurmond and had a daughter Nancy Pope Thurmond b. abt 1832 and d. abt 1916.  Nancy married Robert Ligon McWhorter and had Hamilton and Joe V. McWhorter.  (I don't remember where I found this information.)

I have Chandler M. Pope's family information if you are interested in that:  b. May 30, 1834 in Georgia. d. April 15, 1912 in Alabama (most likely Goodwater, Coosa County - but not verified).  Chandler married Anne Haseltine Brown, daughter of Samuel Neuman Brown and Anne Devane Roberson of Montgomery County, Alabama.

Chandler and Annie were married on January 1, 1863 in Columbus, Georgia.  (in marriage records for Columbus)

Annie was born September 1845 in Georgia and died in 1917, most likely in Goodwater, Coosa County, Alabama.  Chandler's children were Annie Urania Pope (b. Oct 9, 1863 in Alabama, d. July 9, 1948 married David Marion White, b. 1856 in Coosa County, Alabama in 1893), Mary V. Pope (b. abt 1866 in Georgia, married J. A. Neighbors in Coosa County, Alabama in 1892), Margaret "Maggie" B. Pope (b. abt 1869 in Georgia, married Walker in Sylacauga, Alabama), Fannie W. Pope (b. abt 1875 in Alabama, d. in Greenville, Mississippi, married James or John E. Mann, Sr.), Samuel H. Pope (b. abt 1877 in Alabama, married Mary), Charlotte "Lottie" Pope (b. abt 1879 in Alabama, d. December 26, 1966 in Coral Gables or Miami, Florida, married to William Jones McLeod on April 10, 1900, in Alabama) and Lucy B. Pope (b. July 1880 in Alabama, married to E. George Crowell).

Chandler Pope appears in the 1850 Census for Coosa County, Alabama.

Chandler M. Pope is on the roles of the 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment during the Civil War.  He joined Company D as a private in 1863 after he was distressed by the losses at Vicksburg and Gettsburg, according to family lore.  He fought through the end of the war, and was a 1st Lieutenant in Company L at the end of the war.

He is listed in the 1870 census for Lee County, Georgia as head of household, Physician, with wife Ann H. and children Annie (6), Mary (4) and Maggie (1).

Chandler was a medical doctor recorded as an early pioneer doctor of Goodwater, Coosa County, Alabama in 1878 (documented) until the end of his life.

He was postmaster of Goodwater from 1879 to 1881.

He appears in 1880 census for Coosa County Alabama with wife and children.  Did not own the hotel in 1880.

Someone in the Pope family purchased the Railroad Hotel in Goodwater, Coosa County Alabama from William Banks, the original owner, in 1890 for $1000. (I have to verify specifically which Pope).  Chandler's wife was the proprietor of the Hotel until they turned it over to their daughter Annie Urania Pope White, wife of David Marion White sometime in the 1890s.  The Whites owned and operated the hotel until it burned in 1952.

He appears in 1900 census for Coosa County Alabama with wife and daughter Lucy B. born July 1880.

Chandler also appears in 1910 census for Coosa County Alabama.

I am very interested in finding out William Henry Pope's father and mother.  I currently have John Pope and Catherine "Keddy" Hill (b. abt 1770, d. abt 1818).  But I cannot verify which John Pope he was. I hope someone in the Callaways has more information, but in the interim, I plan to contact the Hill clan and see if they can assist me.  The Hills appear to be almost as big a genealogy group as the Callaways.)

Thanks for your help.

Other C/K Lines

Our thanks to Warwick Kellaway for giving us information on Christopher Farewell Kellaway, a "Mystery Kellaway" from the March 2006 newsletter.

As regards Christopher Farewell Kellaway 1741-1805, you are right in the heart of the Upwey family of mariners and brewers. He was the son of Brewer Henry (jun.) and Mary, nephew of the two Luxborough Galley boys. Apparently married to a Mary when young, he married widow Mary Hilliard at Melcombe Regis in 1790. The story becomes more interesting, when his will (he left a substantial estate) is placed against the Parish Registers. His sons were Henry, Christopher and Thomas. Henry died young and left a young daughter.
However Christopher and his daughter Mary married Bryants. Mary had married John Bryant of Abbotsbury, but had a son James in 1791, a little before the marriage. James was brought up by his grandfather as James Kellaway (my point that there may be some Kellaways about with Bryant DNA). Intended by his grandfather to be a husbandman, he joined the East India Company and rose to the rank of Captain. Retired to Melcombe Regis.
Now, I have no record of his burial, but his 1802 will was probated in 1805. Remember 1805? Nelson - Trafalgar. It may be co-incidence, and he would have been 64, and in his will he was described as a Yeoman, but he just could have died at sea.

A Puzzle Still Unsolved -

In March of 1996 CFA received a letter (copied below) from Bonny J. Arnold with information about her Calloway ancestors from Madison Co., KY and Washington Co., IN. To date this line is still undetermined. Can anyone identify this "Mystery Calloway"?

I joined the Callaway Family Association last year and have been meaning to write to you to see if you could help me with my great  grandfather, John R. Calloway. Briefly, here is what I know and my sources.

Born 1839 in Lexington, Fayette Co., KY. (from his Civil War pension file & date from tombstone & newspaper obituary)

In 1840 Fayette Co., census with mother, Delila Calloway, as head of household (ages of John and his mother coincide with ages from 1850 and 1860 census). This would indicate that John's father died in 1839/40 (or left the family) and that John had an older brother & an older sister.

In 1850 census of Washington Co., IN, with Ballard Jones as the head of household and Delila Jones as the mother. This would indicate his mother remarried and there are two younger daughters in the family - the older male and older female are not in the household.

In 1860 census of Washington Co., IN, with Ballard and Delila Jones and 1 younger sister.

In 1863 he enlisted in Company C (or G) of the 117th Indiana Infantry (1890 Special Census from Madison Co., KY, and Civil War pension papers)

There is a possible marriage in 1865 to a Syntha Headrick in Washington Co., IN. There is a recorded marriage but no other information & on the Civil War Widow's Pension paperwork, his widow, Sarah, indicates that he had not been married previously.

About 1868 he left for Kentucky. (Statement on Civil War pension papers)

I have been unable to locate him on the 1870 census.

21 Jan 1876 he married my grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth Haley, in Madison Co., KY. (recorded marriage)

He is listed on the 1880 census in Madison Co., KY.

He died 21 Jan 1897 (on his wedding anniversary). I have a copy of his obituary from the Richmond Newspaper & his tombstone indicates the year.

I would appreciate any information that you might be able to give me on these lines. My great grandfather's Calloway name line has ended. . .his one son had one daughter. . .unless of course he did have an older brother as in the 1840 census who continued the line.

Thank you for any help,
Bonny J. Arnold

Rufus P. Callaway - Who Am I?

In 1996 CFA received the following letter from CFA Member, John S. Callaway of Okeechobee, FL. He was trying to identify his Callaway ancestor, Rufus P. Callaway. To date Rufus Callaway remains a "Mystery Callaway". Can anyone help to identify him?

Dear Miss Callaway,
I got your name and address from an old flyer from the Callaway Family Association. I understand that you are, or were, the historian, and if you are, I was wondering if you could help me find some information.

My great-grandfather was Rufus P. Callaway. From my grandfather's birth certificate, Rufus was born about 1881 somewhere in Missouri. From family legend that has been passed down, I've been told that he was from Springfield.

He married my great-grandmother, Maude M. Smith on March 31, 1908 at the Logan M. E. Church (Logan Co., IA). My grandfather, Claude Eugene Callaway, was born May 2, 1908 at Wessington, SD. In the old days, Vayland was somewhere in that area, and that is where Maude's father had a horse ranch.

Shortly after the birth of granddaddy, Rufus took off because his father-in-law gave him an awful time. Apparently Rufus came from a family of maritime lawyers. Harvey E. Smith, Sr. used to say, "We've had hoss thieves, cattle rustlers and murderers in this family, but never any lawyers." Apparently Harvey thought that lawyers were the lowest form of life.

Any information you could send me, or if you could tell me where to look, I would be grateful.
With best wishes,
John S. Callaway

The following biography of Joseph Kelway is found in the Dictionary of National Biography. The Dictionary of National Biography began in 1882 as an ambitious project spearheaded by George Smith to produce a biographical dictionary of prominent figures from Britain and Ireland from the earliest of times up to 1900. The efforts of hundreds of contributors resulted in a 22 volume alphabetical series containing thousands of biographies.

Kelway, Joseph (d. 1782), organist and harpsichord player, studied under his brother, Thomas and Geminiani. He succeeded Shuttleworth as organist of St. Michael's, Cornhill, about 1730, and resigned in 1736 to succeed Weldon at St. Martin's-in-the-Fields. His extempore playing, with its 'flights, fancies, and execution adapted to the instrument' had not been excelled 'even by Handel, though the fugue. . .of the latter was greater.' Handel himself, among other musicians, frequented St. Martin's Church to hear his fantastic performances. Kelway was no less esteemed as a performer on the harpsichord. Among his pupils were Charles Wesley, Mrs. Delany, and Queen Charlotte, to whom he was appointed harpsichord master on her arrival in England, 1761. Mrs. Pendarves wrote in 1736 to Ann Granville; 'My brother has tied me down at last to learn of Kellaway; he has paid him the entrance money, which is two guineas, and has made me a present of Handel's "Book of Lessons." I don't find Kellaway's method difficult at all;' and Ann Granville asks Lady Throckmorton, in August 1739: 'Have you heard Mr. Kellaway upon the harpsichord'? He is at Scarborough, and a most delightful player, very little inferior to Handel.' He rendered Scarlatti's most difficult sonatas brilliantly, and is described by Burney as the 'head of the Scarlatti sect.' John Christian Bach subsequently introduced a new style, the pianoforte became fashionable, and Kelway's musical 'sect' did not survive the change in public taste.

Kelway died in 1782, and his will (signed 14 April 1779 and proved 5 June 1782) provided for his grandnephew, William Kelway, and for four grandnieces, one of whom was Elizabeth, wife of John Stafford Smith. To her and to Ann Heather he left his harpsichord (made by Petrus Joannes Couchet), his Cremona violin, and all his instruments and books of music. He had given his picture of Germiniani and his own portrait to his 'faithful servant, Ann Phillips,' to whom also was granted during her life the use of his house in King's Row, Upper Grosvenor Street, and his household goods. Robert Heather, coachbuilder, and John Stafford Smith were the executors. The collection of music was sold in 1782. Except a few court minuets, etc, Kelway's only publication was 'Six Sonatas for the Harpsichord,' 1764.

Donna,
Just wanted to let you know that - with your help in nailing down my elusive Callaway ancestors - I have just been accepted into DAR under the name of Micajah Callaway. After several computer crashes, I bought a new one, but my information saved online did not all return. I know that there was a file I had saved regarding an annual family reunion held each June in Indiana by the descendants of Micajah Callaway.  I would love to be able to attend this year as well as visit his gravesite.  Does anyone in CFA attend and/or have the information regarding this event (time/place/whom to contact?) Does anyone plan to attend?

I am applying for DAR and having an extremely hard time with Bethany Callaway (1780-1871) married to Joseph Hale Talbot (1775-1858). It seems that all info on ancestry.com is wrong. Chambers Co. says she is not buried there. Wilkes Co. says they have no record of them being married there. I am having a hard time. Is there someone who could point me in the right direction. This is my last link in my DAR application. Thanks, Pat in Chicago

Editor's Note - I wrote back to Pat with the following information:

I checked our archives and found only one reference to Bethany and Joseph Talbot. In the 1993 CFA Journal there is an article regarding John Callaway Cemetery, Wilkes Co., GA with an identification map of the cemetery. It states, Exact locations of graves for John and Bethany Callaway are unknown; marker erected in 1904. The granite for this marker and the posts for the fence were quarried on the farm, approximately ¼ mile southwest of the cemetery. … The cemetery was begun between 1783-1800. Graves were marked only with field stones at first. Several graves are in the area surrounding this marker but exact locations and identification are unknown. Joe Talbot, husband of Bethany Callaway (daughter of John and Bethany Callaway), is buried among these unknowns. Bethany Callaway Talbot moved to Alabama with her children.

I am interested in CFA Membership. Is there any information about the parents of Mary Baker, wife of Captain Thomas Callaway? Thank you, Allie Nelson

I'm researching the history of Canterbury's Public Library. It originates from 'The Friendly Society for the Cultivation of Useful Knowledge' founded in 1769 by John Callaway, 1738-1807 a Master Weaver in Canterbury. More info about him very welcome.
