THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION Volume III No. 4 EDITORIAL by Dr. Bruce Callaway
Further great progress has been made this past month in filling the gaps in the History of the Name and in personal Family Trees due to intense work and e-mail communications between the CFA genealogists and International members. It is to me, personally astounding being able to participate in the unravelling of the enormous amount of research that has been accumulated from around the world by the individuals concerned.
Much recent focus has been on Coats of Arms held by our ancient forbears. These unique pictorial devices, in use since medieval times, each have a very revealing story to tell when finally interpreted. The right to “bear Arms” and the very strict guidelines for heraldic symbols can not only identify persons, but can indicate inheritances and marriages. Their survival over the centuries as stained glass windows in churches and castles often reveals or confirms the place of abode of our ancestors.
It is hoped that in the very near future you will be able to view some of these magnificent ancestral devices in full living color. Watch this space!
LIVE VIDEO/AUDIO
COMES TO THE CFA Led by Kermit Bridges in West Virginia and Gary Garnett in Texas, and suitably encouraged by your computer expert Russ Callaway, your co-editors in Canada and Australia are achieving simultaneous live video and audio links around the world. Whilst still requiring some fine-tuning, it is hoped that we will soon be able to advise any CFA member with a home PC with our recommendations.
The potential for the advancement of the CFA is huge. Not only would it assist your genealogists in their research, enable members of your Board to eliminate some long distance travel for meetings, but allow live interaction between a number of our members. What’s more, it’s lots of fun and relatively inexpensive!
An “advanced” Chat Room even! PROPOSED BULLETIN SURVEY
Your co-editors have discussed the possibility of shortly having a brief, non-intrusive survey of our readers. Firstly, as any “Editor” would like to know, are you actually receiving the Bulletin? Whilst its content largely relies on the contributions of the members, we would like to know what you think about its format. Inherent in this question would be maybe, what sort of PC and system do you have? Perhaps then, and only then, your ‘highly paid’ editors can provide you with the content and format, which you will actually read! Stay tuned! MARKER INSTALLED
William Munroe Callaway, who died 140 years ago in 1862, has finally had his marker installed in Oakwood Cemetery Virginia. John J. Zoch, Sr. of Seaford, Delaware, reports that his ancestor William, who was born 1837 in Sussex County, Delaware, was a 1st Sergeant of the 17th Georgia, Company “K”.
Linda Snow Davis, of Georgia, is the author of a book shortly to be released on the 17th Georgia Regiment and in which appear details of William M. Callaway’s service in, as John describes, “This tragic episode in American history”. William’s resting place and the SSRF web site can be viewed at: www.southernsoldiers.comRICHARD S. KING
President Pat Schnurr has been in touch with long time member and Director of the CFA, Dick King, of Madison, IN, following his recent serious illness. Dick, who is presently recovering from a heart operation and the insertion of a pacemaker and is quoted as saying, “It was a heck of a way to spend your winter vacation” can be contacted by e-mail at richard214 at webtv.net. Our best wishes go to Dick and Dianne.JOHN AP CALLAWAY
Former Board member Margaret B. Stephenson sadly writes to say that John Ap Callaway died March 4. His funeral was at Conyers, Georgia. His widow Doris, is in a personal care home, Remington Health Care, 1508 Renaisance Dr., Conyers, Georgia 30012.
Both John Ap and Doris were faithful to attend meetings and he was on the Board of Directors for many years. They had many friends within the CFA. SPRING MEETING OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
A very full Agenda is promised by President Pat Schnurr for May 3, 4 for the Directors of the CFA attending the meeting in Key West, Florida. Many will be travelling long distances and fitting this in to very busy schedules. It is a matter of regret that this “little black duck” will not be able to attend. A 24,000-mile round trip is a little tiring for his wings! Hope to see you’all in Baltimore, MD in October.
Because Co-Editor Bill will be in Florida until May7, the next issue of the Bulletin will be delayed for a week or so. It will feature highlights from the Board meeting. CALLAWAY TARTAN
Much discussion ensued when the question was posed “Is there a C/K Tartan?”
I have to sadly report that, no convincing argument has appeared to support the existence of such an item. As always with research, one must keep an open mind to any possibility. Receipt of factual historical evidence for a tartan remains open! TEXAS CFA PICNIC

CALLAWAY GARDENS SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN submitted by Bill Callaway
While we're on the subject of Georgia, an old friend of mine, Ed Rumohr, of North Vancouver, B.C., just sent me a clipping from a magazine called Taste of Home. It gives the recipe for "Callaway Gardens Southern Fried Chicken", which is served in the Country Kitchen restaurant at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia. Ed thought the recipe might be of interest to the readers of the Bulletin, so here it is:
2 cups all-purpose flour 6 tablespoons seasoned salt 1/4 cup salt-free seasoning blend 2 tablespoons paprika 1 tablespoon pepper 2 broiler/fryer chickens (3 to 4 pounds each), cut up Oil for frying
In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the first five ingredients. Add chicken, a few pieces at a time, and shake to coat. In a large skillet, heat 1/4 in. of oil on medium-high; fry chicken in batches for 18-20 minutes, or until juices run clear, turning once. Yield: 6-8 servings.
How many of you have already had the pleasure of eating this specialty of the Country Kitchen? Bon Appetit! RENEWAL REMINDERS
Martha Winkler, Assistant Secretary, recently mailed about 250 Renewal Reminders, 90 of which went to members on our e-mail list. If you are one of them, please send your form back to Martha at your earliest convenience. Last year she had to send only about 150 notices, with only 60 being e-mailers. Hmmm!!! HAPPY EASTER!
