Volume II  No. 3

RENEWALS
Since the last count at the middle of February, there have been another 75 renewals, bringing the total to 381 (of 558) for a renewal rate of 68%.   Hopefully, a good percentage of the outstanding renewals will send their forms (with dues enclosed) to Martha Winkler, our Assistant Secretary, before she has to mail a Reminder to them about the middle of March. Let's save the postage.   It is interesting to note that the renewal rate is much higher for those members with computers (73%) than it is for non-computer members (55%). Does that mean that the Bulletin is playing a role in encouraging early renewals? I hope so.   In addition to all the recent renewals, there have been four New memberships added to the previous 11, for a total of 15 so far this year. They are:
Bockman, Christie Jo
of Branson, MO     chris94537 at aol.com
Deelman, Laurie E.
of Port Alberni, BC, Canada     ellenora3 at home.com
Jarrell, Roland, Jr.
of Cumming, GA     ga-Jarrell at juno.com
Trammell, Faye Stephens
of Fayetteville, GA
Welcome all to the Callaway Family Association.

Just took a break to check out that 6.4 earthquake near Seattle about 11:00 am today, (Wednesday). It was felt even up here in Parksville. A little unnerving to see the monitor and keyboard wobbling around for a few seconds. No damage here, though.

SOUTHERN  SOLDIERS  REMEMBRANCE  FUND
New member, John J. Zoch, Sr., of  Seaford, Delaware has requested that the following e-mail, dated Feb.26, 2001, be published in the Bulletin.   Subject: After 139 years Stone to be dedicated for William M. Callaway, 17th Georgia Infantry, Company K.   To: Mr. Bill Ward & Southern Soldiers Remembrance Fund   Thank you so much for your quick reply! I think you have a wonderful website at
www.SouthernSoldiers.com and I recommend your site to everyone! When I clicked on Oakwood Cemetery in Richmond, VA, I could not believe all the graves without any stones - 18,000 soldiers in Oakwood alone. I couldn't believe the V.A. wouldn't place stones on "Confederate Graves" until a couple of decades ago. What a disservice to these soldiers! Can we be sure that the V.A. will place a Grave Stone and not a brass plaque on William M. Callaway's grave? Must someone claim William as an ancestor? My wife and I would like to be on site, upon dedication of this Grave Marker for our "possible" Cousin; Pvt. William M. Callaway, of the 17th Georgia Infantry, Co. K. Please let us know of this date in advance.   We are still researching to see if we are related, and hope that some reader of this e-mail could place soldier William M. Callaway with his Georgia family.
Southernly, John and Joyce (Henson) Zoch
Seaford, Delaware
E-mail: Zochster at aol.com

A NOTE FROM DONNA MORGAN, CFA WEBMASTER
There have been some (hopefully) improvements in the accessibility to the Joseph and Peter family files on the CFA web site. Those of you who have already visited the pages, please visit again and tell us what you think. Those of you who haven't visited yet, now would be a good time for you to try it out.
Kermit Bridges and Dan Smith are hard at work organizing and proofing and keying in vast amounts of Callaway data. So the files will be updated many times as they progress. Here's a link directly to the family tree page: http://www.callawayfamily.org/familytree.htm Once there, choose the line to view (either Joseph or Peter). The viewing screen gives you a couple of options:

  •  You can click on an alphabet letter to see an index of surnames contained in the file, and then go directly to a particular person, or,

  • You can click on the little tree in the middle of the page to go to the beginning of the file
    (i.e., Joseph or Peter).

Each name you see that is clickable will take you to that person's family group sheet, where you can view the family data plus any notes, sources, and photos available for that person. You can also view US or World migration maps for the family, and statistics about the information in the file.   Please drop me a note and let me know your thoughts, suggestions, ideas, and problems (hope not). It won't be the last changes made, I'm sure, but I hope this moves us in the right direction.
Thanks for your help, Donna Morgan, dfmorgan at vnet.net

Russ Callaway, CFA Technologist, adds, in a message to Donna: "Please do not forget that we will be having more lines than just Joe and Pete. The International lines will be coming along in time, and should fit into your scheme of division."

Part  Two

INTERESTING  WEB  SITES

Webmaster Donna Morgan has found a brand new genealogy site that is loaded with links and resource information. It is www.personalheritage.com   One of the useful tools to be discovered at Personal Heritage is called a "Memory Prompts Kit" which helps you record your life history, and create a living legacy for your children, grandchildren, and other descendants.   "By recognizing this privileged responsibility and making this commitment to record your life story, you will ensure that your family can enjoy the memories, stories, insights, and personal accounts that only you can relate. You will be sharing a priceless piece of yourself with your family."   A full description of this program can be found at the above-mentioned web site.   On a personal note, I ordered the Kit on Feb. 19 and it arrived yesterday. The $39.95 cost (which includes 4 interesting bonuses) is a fair price for Americans. Unfortunately, for those of us living outside the US, the foreign exchange rate of 1.57 increased the price to $62.72 CDN, paid by VISA. Then when it arrived by UPS, another amount of $32.40 was added for Import Charges. Grand total = $95.12. UGH! I must make sure to use it now.

Still on the subject of web sites, check out our own Callaway Family Association site at www.callawayfamily.org and under Directors you will find a new Bio and photo for Connie Sherrill, of Strong, AR.
