THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION
CFANET e-NEWSLETTER
  March 2000

Volume I  No. 2

INTRODUCTION

Here is the second issue of the BULLETIN for the year 2000. We hope that you will find it to be a useful addition to the Callaway Family Association arsenal. It is evolving month by month and we would like your input on how you wish it to develop. Please send any suggestions and/or comments to Bill Callaway at callawaybill at home.com .

GROUND RULES

The following is an important reminder from Russ Callaway, Computer Chief.  "We are glad to have Callaways and their descendants join us in the CFANET e-mail  program. Please remember that our purpose is to exchange information on matters of  genealogy and family interest. Please do not use these lists for spamming or jokes. (One  more set will surely fill my in-box so there will be no time to do my other work). Thanks  again for your support of the CFA and its goals."

MEMBERSHIP

As of February 14, there had been 242 renewals processed by Martha Winkler (Assistant Secretary) and by Heide Callaway (Treasurer). Heide has sent copies on to me for updating the CFANET roster. There are now 72 of you included in that group, plus another 36 new e-mailers, giving us 108 paid-up CFANETers. In addition, there are 10 CFA Life Members with e-mail, giving us a grand total, so far, of 118.

Martha tells me that renewals "have been kinda slow this year" so if you haven't sent your form back to her yet, please do so A.S.A.P. She is eagerly waiting to process them.

CFANET MAP

I am plotting all CFANETers on a map of North America to present a clear picture of where you all live, so that  the new CFANET Roster, as of April 1, will reflect proper State/Regional groupings.  There are now 118 pins in the map, which is mounted on cork board. We will be happy to provide you with a copy of the new Roster, (but not the map) upon request. Come to the Annual Meeting if you want to see the map. Members from far-off lands such as Australia, New Zealand, England and Belgium, will be combined with Canada to form one group.

CFA HOME PAGES

Russ also reports that  "The CFA Home pages have been transferred from Cameron Todd Callaway, TX to Donna  Morgan, NC. Cameron took the original pages I developed and did wonders with  them. His workload has gone up and we are giving him some rest. We owe a great deal  to Cameron for his work on the pages these years. We look forward to more  improvements to the pages from Donna."

Donna has agreed to give us an update report for the next issue of the BULLETIN in April.

CHAT ROOM

Just a reminder that the next regular Chat Room session will be held on Sunday, March 5 at 10 PM Eastern Time (9 CT,8 MT, and 7 PT). Join us by going to the Callaway Family Association Home Page (see above) , click on Chat Room, then follow the instructions.

P.S. The Chat Room is open at all times and you can set up your own session by inviting others to be there at a designated time.

INTERESTING WEBSITES

While there possibly could be a whole newsletter devoted entirely to Websites, we will just mention a few each issue. If you have some favorites, please let me know so that they can be included.

For some of us, there is a particularly interesting one at
 1.
www.igrandparents.com, devoted to "enriching the lives of grandparents and their grandchildren". In this most recent newsletter, you  can click on a link called "Reminisce with your grandchildren", and you will get a 2 page article on Family History. Enjoy.

2.    A Website that will interest all of us, is
www.familytreemagazine.com    -  "Discover, Preserve and Celebrate Your Family History". You can subscribe to a free weekly        Newsletter called TIPS AND UPDATES, with helpful research, organization and         preservation tips. It has many links to useful information.

HOT TIP - Just off the Press

Helen Imburgia, of Aston, (near Philadelphia) Pennsylvania, just e-mailed me this important genealogy up-date info.
"Last night at a lecture, I was talking to my friend & colleague, Dr. Robert (Bob) Plowman
of the Mid-Atlantic National Archives in Philadelphia. He told me that on July 1, 2000,
the cost of the Military Records was going from $10.00 to $17.50 & the cost of the Pension Records from $10.00 to $40.00. This is for the Revolutionary War, Civil War,  etc. So you may want to send for these records before the cost goes up! The passenger  ship list will increase in price too. Please pass this on to others doing genealogy research!  Happy hunting, Helen"

The BULLETIN would be happy to print other such tips in future issues. It is exactly this kind of interaction that will make this newsletter successful. Thanks, Helen.

GENEALOGY QUESTION OF THE MONTH - Submitted by Kermit Bridges

Richard Callaway (7) had two wives and 15 children. Which of the children belong to his second wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Jones Hoy? The 1980 Callaway Journal says their marriage was "about" 1767. The birth years of his children were 1746, 1748, 1750, 1752, 1754, 1756, 1758, 1760, 1762, 1763, 1764, 1766, Keziah b. 8 Aug 1768, Richard, Jr. b.14 Jun 1770, and John, b. 25 Aug 1775.
"My opinion, which doesn't count for much, since I am descended from William Callaway (5), is that it is most probable that the only child of Elizabeth Hoy is the last one." "I am putting together the Callaway Family Tree and would like to consider the input from all sources. Let me hear from you!" Kermit Bridges jundal at verizon.net

NOTICES OF STATE/REGIONAL ACTIVITIES

1. Carole Romano of Castroville, TX reports that the 4th Annual CFA Texas Picnic will be held at Bastrop State Park on Saturday, March 11, 2000 from 11.00 am - 3.00 pm. All CFA Callaways are welcome and if any CFANETers have Texas Callaway relatives, please pass the information along. They are most welcome! All they need to bring is their lunch and their family. Also bring any genealogical information or pictures - that is always of great interest.
2. Evelyn and Don Dixon of Benton, AR have just notified us that the CFA ARKANSAS PICNIC is planned for April 29, 2000 at the Dixon Farm, complete with fishing and a hayride. WOW! More on that next month.
3. Clay and Maria Callaway of Fayetteville, GA will be hosting the FIRST CFA GEORGIA PICNIC on July 29, 2000. More details to follow.

FINALLY

I would like to thank my wife, Rosemary, for helping me with the word processing part of putting out this Bulletin which, judging by the length of it, should be renamed Epistle.

If there is anyone out there with newsletter experience and who has some spare time once a month, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. The pay is poor (actually non-existent) but the other rewards are tremendous!

We had a number of other items to include in the Bulletin such as :
 - A Feature Article
 - Bio of the Month
 - Members' Home Pages
 - Reports from CFA Board Members, e.g., President, Treasurer, Secretary, etc.
 - Surveys
 - Any CFA-related item you would like to suggest.

However, space and time did not permit. See you next month.
