Always regard
with esteem the name you were given;
with praise and renown that it should endure.

The Editor's Corner
As we
discovered last year in the newsletter, February is Library
Lovers Month. A very appropriate celebration for genealogists.
And along those lines I would like to thank Ted Kellaway, our
new "Cousin" in South Africa for sending us a copy of the Thomas
Hardy poem entitled Heredity. It speaks so eloquently to why we
do what we do.
HEREDITY
I am the
family face;
Flesh perishes, I live on,
Projecting trait and trace
Through time to times anon,
And leaping from place to place
Across oblivion.
The years-heired
feature that can
In curve and voice and eye
Despise the human span
Of durance - that is I;
The eternal thing in man,
That heeds no call to die.
~ by Thomas
Hardy, written and published in Moments of Vision, 1917.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Many years ago I came on these lines and they appealed to me so
much that I set them on the opening page of my family tree
portfolio.
They are so appropriate to our interest, I thought I would share
them with you.
Regards,
Ted

Editor's Note - Now is a great time to
submit your Callaway/Kellaway family genealogy information to
CFA. For all of you who have already submitted your family
information, we thank you. And for those of you who have not
done so yet, it's a great time to rummage around in your
genealogy shoeboxes and share what you have learned about your
Callaway/Kellaway ancestry. The sharing of genealogy information
benefits all of us.
I look forward to hearing from you.

I
would like to thank CFA Member Martha Winkler for
letting us know about the death of long time member, Pat
Schlabes who lived in Davis, CA. Our condolences go to
her husband, Whitey, and all their family.
Patricia
Chiles Schlabes
Pat was a fourth generation Davisite of the pioneering
Chiles family. She was born Aug. 17, 1929, in Woodland,
the youngest child of William Earl and Olga Ketelsen
Chiles. She died unexpectedly on Wednesday, Oct. 22,
2008, at the age of 79.
She graduated from Davis High School in 1947 and
attended Sacramento City College where she was a Pioneer
Day Queen. She married Walter "Whitey" Schlabes on Sept.
2, 1951. She was a homemaker and was a passionate
historian of her Chiles family history. She compiled
pioneer biographies and helped prepare the manuscript of
the book "Davisville '68" with author and long time
friend Joann Leach Larkey. She served many years as a
4-H leader, was active in the Sacramento Pioneer
Association, Yolo County Historical Society, Hattie
Weber Museum of Davis and St. James Catholic Church.
Pat was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, neighbor and

smile and a special sparkle in her eye that let everyone
know she took an interest in them and how she genuinely
cared.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Whitey
Schlabes; daughter, Nancy Douglas and her husband Marc
of Davis and their daughter Jennifer; sons, Jim and his

Genealogy
Research is About to Improve in Missouri
I would like
to thank Anne Leyden for letting us know about a
new genealogy project underway in Missouri.
Dr. Hall's Index
offers unique research tool
Stroll under a blue-sky canopy and a stately wooden
arch into the local history department tucked away
in the northeast corner of the Library Center.
There, you'll find an extensive collection of
histories, treatises, genealogies, volumes of all
kinds, bound in respectful blacks, grays and browns
befitting their dignity and seriousness.
Midway and toward the back, you'll notice a
contrast, a rainbow hue of thick books bound in a
wide assortment of crayon-colored covers, about 39
linear feet of shelving packed with what staff
appreciatively and respectfully refer to as Dr.
Hall's Index.
These 225 volumes represent one of the most
important and valuable tools the Springfield-Greene
County Library District can offer its genealogical
patrons, said Local History Librarian Michael Glenn.
Officially called "Abstracts and Index of Items
of Genealogical Interest," the books contain
something like 3 million clippings of obituaries,
marriages, births and divorce announcements printed
in Springfield newspapers between 1865 and 2006.
Springfield native and retired dermatologist Dr.
William K. Hall, now a St. Louis resident, began
indexing these items in the 1940s from Springfield
newspapers for his own personal research as a
genealogist.
"Dr. Hall took it upon himself to provide our
libraries, as well as others in the state, with
these colorfully hardbound copies of his work every
year," said Glenn. "It's truly a unique collection
and rare that a library would be provided such a
comprehensive and extensive resource."
The work is not only of interest to those
researching their family trees.
"It's valuable to people trying to contact
classmates, or to find out about past tragedies. The
clippings have helped birth parents reunite with
their children and locate long-lost relatives. The
information has provided clues for research into all
kinds of events and is a way to confirm dates," said
Glenn.
"The books have saved researchers countless hours
in time spent searching through multiple documents."
As valuable as this printed resource is to those
who can get to the Library Center (and to a limited
collection at the Library Station), digitizing the
data and placing it online will reach a far wider
audience. With generous financial support from Dr.
Hall, the library's computer services department has
already started this momentous task.
"The potential this project has for aiding online
research is incredible," says Glenn.
For more information about Dr. Hall's Index,
visit the Library Center or contact local history
staff at 883-5341.

A Kelloway
World War II Casualty
I would like to thank
CFA Member, Don Kellaway in Ontario for sending us this
information. Can anyone identify his family line? He is a
"Mystery
Kelloway".
Donna:
This is an
excellent website re WWII and it details the last flight
of Lancaster DV187 on which Edward Kelloway of Thunder
Bay, Ontario was the only Canadian crew member, the rest
of the crew being English. When he was reported missing
in 1943 I recall my parents contacting his family to
offer their condolences. If you should publish it
perhaps someone may know the name of his parents so that
their names can be added to the website and to
the websites of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission
and the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.
Cheers, Don

Edward
Kelloway was a pupil at Hillcrest High School in Thunder
bay, Ontario, Canada. Each year during a semesta, the school
honour their pupils who have died in many conflicts world
wide to date. They have a "Stairway of Honour" where
photographs of their pupils who have died are displayed and
the photograph of Edward above has come from this stairway.
In total there are now photographs of 84 former pupils who
are honoured including the most recent who died in
Afghanistan in 2006. Edward has no surviving family.

Editor's Note - After sending the above information, Don
was able to discover who Edward Kelloway's parents were.
Hi again
Donna:
Here are the
parents of the Edward Kelloway that was killed over
Germany in 1943. I checked the 1911 Canadian census
(most recent) and I could not find his father in Canada.
Since Newfoundland didn't join the confederation until
1949 he may have been born there as the Kelloway
spelling is most common in that province.
By the way
the information came from the new pilot program (Family
Search Record Search) that the Mormons are testing;
just a great program for information. If it is expanded
it will be the best search program on the web.
Cheers,
Don

Check out this
book on the beginnings of Greene Co., IL. I was
looking for my Greene Co. relatives and came across
this. Starting at the bottom of p 49 and
continuing on p 50:
"On the breaking
out of the Revolution, the British held every post
of Virginia, and the sturdy pioneers of the West,
alive to their interests, and recognizing the great
benefits of obtaining the control of the trade in
this part of the New World, held steadily to their
purposes, and those within the commonwealth of
Kentucky proceeded to exercise their civil
privileges, by electing John Todd and Richard
Gallaway, burgesses to represent them in the
Assembly of the parent state.".........
I believe
this should be Richard Callaway ???

U. S. Joseph Callaway Line
I would like to thank Betty Silvey for sharing
some wonderful pictures of her Callaway ancestors. Betty
descends from the Joseph Callaway line, but may have one link in her
family to the Peter Callaway line. Her line of descent to her
great grandmother is as
follows:
Joseph Callaway
Richard Callaway and 2nd wife Elizabeth Jones
John B. Callaway
John B. Callaway, Jr.
Edwin Henry Callaway
Eloise Callaway
Donna,
I have come across something again that may
have the paths of Peter and Joseph Callaway crossing in my
family.

Eugenia Callaway Melton
This picture of Gina Calloway Melton came
from an album that my cousin has of our great grandmother
Eloise Callaway Williams. I have only recently seen it and
starting delving into who she was.
The first Gina (Regina)
Callaway Melton I came across was on Ancestry deaths:

America
Born: 5 Oct 1888 Died: 26 Jan 1989 State (Year) SSN issued:
Texas (1956)
I tend to believe Gina may have been the dau
of Lewis and Martha Howell of MO as they were closer to my
family, however, how many chances are there that two Regina
Callaways would marry a Melton?? My Callaways were born in
KY; moved to MO; back to Jefferson Co., KY in 1850 census
and then were in Greene County, IL by 1860. I have found
numerous other pictures if you are interested.
Also think I have identified M. J. Callaway
in the 1850 Jefferson Co., KY census of John B. and Sarah
Callaway. There is an Illinois marriage for Mary Julia
Calaway and Samuel L. Freeborn married 27 Aug 1857, Greene
Co., IL. This fits, but she may have died as I cannot find
them in census. There is a Samuel L. Freeborn m to Mrs.
Addie Wilson 1 Nov 1863 St. Louis, MO and they are in later
census of MO. This was around the time of Richard M. B.
Callaway's marriage to Harriett Boggess.
I have pictures of Matilda Matlock; her
mother Margaret McKirgan Matlock; her sisters and brothers;
Clinton DeWitt Callaway; Minnie S. Callaway McChesney and
her husband and children; Eloise Callaway Williams and
family. My mother will be 93 in January and had never seen
some of these pictures that were in the album.
Maybe you can use Gina Callaway Melton in the
blog or unidentified area.

believed to be Edwin Henry Callaway
The one "Matilda Matlock
Callaway and one I said believe to be Edwin Henry
Callaway are early 1850's silver oxide pictures. My
mother just found them and gave them to me this last
month. She did not know who they were or whether they
had come from Eloise or Minnie's family. She had old
pictures passed down thru the Callaway and Matlock
families but none were identified except for DeWitt
Clinton's and Minnie's mother-in-law, as well as the
later Callaway/Matlock photos. Later one of Matilda was
in Grammie's album.

John Thomas Callaway's store

DeWitt Clinton Callaway

John Thomas Callaway

Eloise Callaway and husband Albert Williams

believed to be Minnesota (Minnie) Callaway
I had the others of Ed,
perhaps John, as well as most of the ones of John
Thomas. The store one was in Grammie's album. The one
of DeWitt Clinton in full uniform was in the album, I
had the other one along with a note saying verified by
E. H. Callaway.
I had possibly on several
others, but after putting them together I am pretty sure
that's who they are.
The one "possibly E.
H. Callaway" could well be John B. Callaway, Jr. It is
a tintype and was under the smaller picture of DeWitt
Clinton with the lock of hair between (over his face, so
was hard to distinguish.) I have been told it would be
highly unusual for a brother's picture to be placed on
top of a brothers, but would be more plausible to be over
his fathers. John B. died in 1860. DeWitt Clinton
during Civil War. I would be interested in getting the
DNA of the hair to determine who it might have belonged
to. It is a small snippet tied with a black string.
It is strange that I cannot
find any pictures of Lillian May Wooley Callaway, wife
of John Thomas, that I can identify. Surely some of the
unidentified ones are of her. Someone in IL had a lot
of unidentified among his Metcalf pictures and had one
of Blanche Wooley, sister to Lillian, so I am trying to
match up with ones I have. Albert Newton Williams'
sister married a Metcalf. Another married a Henderson
descended from the ones at Boonesborough.
A friend photographed the
Callaway graves in Greene Co., IL for me as well. I thought I was through with
my genealogy, but things keep popping up to check
further.
Paths have crossed before. A lady in Texas, who is
married to a descendant of Peter Callaway, is descended
from John Akers of Crawford, IL, who was husband of my
Grandmother's sister on my father's side.
She copied me an entire book on the Akers family
including pictures.William Callaway, brother to
Richard, sold some property in Beaufort, SC to Gideon
Orrell, an ancestor of my first husband.
Peter Callaway's descendants
were in Baldwin County, AL with the Orrells (at Ft.
Morgan with them during Civil War as well).
There was a William Callaway
in Greene Co., IL that was mentioned in John B.
Callaway's Will that I have not identified. Perhaps he
was the father of Gina. Will be interested to see if
anyone has any information on her.

THE EDISON LIGHT
The Northwest Electric Company Carries the Day, and Receives an
Extension of Permits.
A special meeting of the
city council was held yesterday afternoon for the purpose of
considering the application of the Northwest Electric Company
for a renewal of their permits to erect poles and string wires.
In receiving the first permit the company agreed to have the
system in operation within the period specified, which extended
up to the 3rd December. The fire, water and light committee, of
which Ald. Campbell is chairman, held that the permit had
expired at the date mentioned, as the lights were not yet
furnished; and the council passed a resolution that before a
renewal be granted the company be required to enter into an
agreement to put up insulated wire only. This the company
refused to do, and held that, as their operations had been going
on, they had not forfeited their permit. They also asked for an
opportunity to produce evidence that their system involved no
danger to life or property; and a resolution was accordingly
passed by the council that a special meeting be held as soon as
the company should be prepared with the representations they
desired to submit. In pursuance of this resolution the meeting
was held yesterday, the members of the council present being the
Mayor and Aldermen Ross, Hargrave, Callaway, Fletcher, Campbell,
Black, MacDonald and Lewis.
Mr. Harry Cameron, secretary
of the company, produced correspondence from about 40 different
cities out of fifty in the United States to which he had
written, where bare wire is in use. He had asked the managers of
the different companies to reply to a series of questions. Among
the principal of the forty cities heard from were: Williamsport,
Pa.; Roselle, NJ.; Cumberland, Md.; Des Moines, Ia.; Harrisburg,
Pa.; West Chester, Pa.; McKeesport, Pa.; Erie, Pa.; Reading,
Pa.; Wilmington, Del.; Topeka, Kan.; Wayne, Pa.; Laramie City,
Wyoming; Wilkesbarre, Pa.; Elgin, Illinois; Rockford, Illinois;
Abilene, Kansas; Norriston, Pa.; St. Paul, Minn.; Renovo, Penn.;
Spokane Falls, Washington; Birmingham, Ala.; Albany, N.Y.; Sauls
St. Marie, Mich.; Paterson, N.J. the letters after being read,
were handed to the city clerk, in whose office they can be seen
by any citizens interested in examining them. The evidence
received from all the places where bare wire has been in use in
main and conductors for periods of one to six years, was
unanimous that no single instance had been recorded of accident
to life, or fire traceable in any way to the use of such wires.
In addition to this testimony which was in every way favorable,
evidence was received from the secretary of the board of
underwriters, St. Paul, which went to show that buildings in
which this light is employed, are registered as A1 risks. there
had also been forwarded certificates from the superintendent of
the North American Telegraph Co., the superintendent of police
patrol telegraph, St. Paul and superintendent of telegraph
construction, all of which agreed that no cases of fire had
occurred for which the bare wire of the Edison company was in
any way responsible. A number of writers mentioned incidents of
men receiving the whole strength of the Edison current in their
bodies without injury; they stated that men could handle the
bare wire at the dynamo or anywhere on the line with impunity.
All agreed that there was no danger to life from the current,
and it was stated to be the custom for men to work on the poles
while the current was on. Those who professed to have a
knowledge of both the alternating high tension, and the direct
low tension currents, considered the latter perfectly safe and
the former absolutely dangerous; and the latter safer with bare
wire than the former insulated.

it?

Communications.
Wanted an Explanation.
To the Editor of the Free
Press.
Sir, - In a report in this morning's Free Press of the special
council meeting, called for the purpose of considering the
Northwest Electric company's application for a renewal of a
permit to erect poles and string wires, it is stated that
Alderman Black moved, seconded by Alderman Callaway, that the
time be extended for sixty days. This was after evidence had
been given from over forty cities in the U.S., showing the
system to be safe.
Mr. Bathgate, the manager of
the rival company (Manitoba Electric and Gas Light company),
opposed this, and was followed by Alderman Colin H. Campbell,
who moved, seconded by Alderman Lewis, that the matter be
referred to the city engineer, evidently for the purpose of
delaying matters.
Alderman Joshua Callaway
then asked the mayor's ruling as to whether Alderman Campbell
was not disqualified from voting, on the ground that he was an
interested party, his partner being a director in the rival
company. the mayor overruled this and said that no one in the
council suspected that Alderman Campbell had anything to do with
the gas company. It would have been a very easy thing for
Campbell to have denied instead of evading Alderman Callaway's
charge as he did, by saying he would treat it with contempt.
The amendment injuring the
rival company was put and declared carried by the mayor, but
upon an appeal to the council it appeared that only three, the
unsuspected Alderman Campbell, Lewis and Hargrave voted for it,
while no less than five were against it. The mayor was then
compelled to declare the amendment lost.
Couldn't the mayor count
properly? One would think that with only eight persons in a room
it would be easy for a small boy who never learned to count any
more than eight apples, to find out how the vote was.
Let us be charitable and
suppose that it was an error in judgment, on the mayor's part.
Then the strangest thing of all occurred. The original motion
extending the time was then put and declared by the mayor to be
"lost." Alderman Callaway again appeared to the council and it
was found that only "two" had voted against the motion as
against "five" for it. Alderman Campbell and Hargrave being the
two.
How did the mayor make the
same mistake twice in succession always against the Northwest
Company's interest? Did he see the two who voted for the
amendment through a magnifying glass? Has that magnifying glass
a similar interest in the Gas Company to Alderman Campbell's or
was it an attempt by the retiring aldermen to muzzle the
council? Did Alderman Campbell ever hold shares in the Gas
Company? Were any of them transferred to his partner before his
election to the council? did he ever attend any meetings of the
Gas Company? Why does be always oppose the rival company? Why
did he not deny Alderman Callaway's charge instead of evading
it? Why is it that including the mayor, the four persons
supporting his amendment retire from the council within the next
ten days, forever? Above all, why did the mayor make two such
gross mistakes in counting eight persons within five minutes?
Without suspecting any member of the council as being an
interested party, but as a ratepayer without a dollar in either
company, and desirous of competition, I think an explanation is
in order.
Signed - Ratepayer.

A Mystery in
Perquimans Co., NC. Can anyone identify this Zebulon Calleway
who appeared on the 1729 tax list?
"The first Tax list found in
Perquimans was one taken by Edward Hall in 1729. This list is
interesting from the fact that it mentions the acreage of each
person named on the list. They are given in rotation as follows:
Jeremiah Sutton with 50 acres; John Leary, 100 acres; Edward
Hall, Jr., —; Nathan Long, 150 acres; Zebulon Pratt, 46 acres;
John Smith, 75 acres; Ann Wilson, 100 acres; Robert Roe, 50
acres; Elisha Stone, —; William Arkill, 167 acres; Thos. Thatch,
96 acres; Zebulon Calleway, 50 acres;
. . ."
~ from
History of Perquimans county as compiled from records found
there and elsewhere, by Ellen Goode Rawlings Winslow, Raleigh,
Edwards & Broughton Co., 1931, p. 22.
Editor's Note
- I found this snippet very interesting because the Callaways of
Perquimans Co., NC are probably the branch of the family that my
Callaways belong to. But it is also puzzling because the only
Zebulon Callaway I know of wasn't born until 1752 and couldn't
be on this 1729 tax list. So who is this Zebulon and where does he
fit into the following family line? Or does he fit elsewhere?
Caleb Callaway
born about 1644
Joshua Callaway born 1679
John Callaway died 1772
Zebulon Callaway born 1752
I would
like to thank Ted Kellaway from South Africa, for writing to tell
me that he had submitted his Kellaway family ancestry to Lesley

One of

Donna,
I have been in
contact with Lesley Haigh and given her my family tree

It should prove
worth looking at.
Kind regards and a

Mystery Callaways of Indiana.
I have started our family search. I joined CFA this week. We are in the line of Indiana Callaways. Dr. Beniah Tharp Callaway (sometimes spelled Calloway and/or Benniah) He was a physician, banker and farmer in Madison County, Elwood, Indiana lineage:
Beniah Tharp Callaway
John W. Callaway
Charles A. Callaway
John Beniah Callaway
John Lee Callaway (my husband)
I got information from Wayne County Library- Complete lengthy obituary with picture for Dr Beniah Callaway Dec 4, 1899 stated that he was born in Wayne County, Milton IN 1827. He is listed as head of household 1880 census T9-0293 page 54-D Family search.org history library 1254293.
Beniah is listed as born in Wayne Co Indiana. In History of Wayne county, volume 2, Chicago Interstate Publishing 1884.
I also found unverified information that Beniah's father was James 1798 born in Delaware and died 1879 in
Wayne Co, Milton, IN. and his mother was Matilda (Cooper) Callaway from Pennsylvania.
Beniah and Mary A (?)born abt 1829 Ohio. Children of Beniah and Mary Callaway (all from Indiana)
Henry C Callaway,
Frank Callaway,
John W Callaway,
Robert Callaway,
Emma Callaway.
I am looking for information on this line, especially on John W Callaway 1853-1931
Charles Callaway ( also spelled Charley Calloway) born 1881 Wayne and Madison county Indiana. I am also looking to verify Beniah's
parents- James and Matilda Callaway. I have just begun the
process of gathering hard copies of the birth and death
certificates. Personal stories or pictures would be great.
Editor's
Note - Here is the very nice reply to this query from Sherrill Williams, CFA
Genealogist:
Donna,
I believe this James Callaway of Wayne Co, IN can be found on
the 1830 or 1840 NC census. Years ago when we were working in
Raleigh, Bernice Shaw found him - but I don't recall the county.
It was not in one of the usual Callaway locations. Bernice knew
about this James, and was looking for him.
James was from Bernice's
Callaway line:
Peter - Eliz. Johnson
Peter, Jr - went to Kent County, Del.

Hi, I'm
researching the Callaway/Calloway for a friend, his name is Jack
Callaway. I came across your site, and came across William
Callaway born 1814 Devonport. I'm just trying to find his
marriage certificate to confirm who is father is. Jack comes
from William's son Thomas. I'm putting together his tree for him
for his grandchildren. So I'm wondering if you have any further
information on William. Also can you send me information on your
association so that I can pass it on to him. Jack has lived all
his life in Hayle in Cornwall, as did most of his branch of the
Callaway/Calloway family. Thank you. Yours sincerely, Vivian
Thomas, also in Cornwall.
Editor's
Note - Below is the very nice reply from Lesley Haigh in the UK:
Hello
Vivian and Jack,
Donna
has passed your information request to me in the
UK as I have many records from this and
other areas of the
UK. I have previously also been in contact with another researcher on this particular line.
You can find these families on my website which is
www.leshaigh.co.uk
Select Kellaway Research, then Other Locations Page, Stoke Damerel is in the Plymouth Area Families. Phillack is in the Far West
Cornwall Families. The actual pages are
www.leshaigh.co.uk/kellawaymod/plymouth.html
and
www.leshaigh.co.uk/kellawaymod/farwestcon.html
Hopefully you can scroll down on each page to the town and family you want -
let me know if there are problems with that.
I have
some further information on William and Mary Harris which is not
on the website and may be able to help tracing the Thomas in
Buckland Brewer.
I hope
this helps and look forward to hearing from you.

Hello CFA members &

I am interested in

far back in history for our beloved ancestors that we forget

Query # 523
Subject - Sibyl Callaway Miller
Submitter - Jama Miller Fiscus

I was reading on your website that someone was looking for
information regarding "Mystery" Callaways. Sibyl Callaway
Miller was my mother, her father James H. Callaway, and his
father Lafayette Callaway. We know nothing of Lafayette's
father (I think it may have been a birth out of wedlock) type of
thing. If more info is needed, they can contact me and I'll do
the best I can to fill in any blanks. My name is Jama Fiscus
(Miller).
Thanks....I'd love to be able to piece this thing together.
Sincerely,
Jama Fiscus
