THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION Volume IX No. 2
Always regard
with esteem the name you were given; The Editor's Corner Submit Your Family Data I'll bet you didn't know it, but February is Library Lovers Month. This is a very appropriate celebration for a genealogy society and a great time to submit your Callaway family information to CFA. For all of you who have already submitted your family information, we thank you. And for those of you who have not done so yet, it's a great time to rummage around in your genealogy shoeboxes and share what you have learned about your Callaway/Kellaway ancestry. The sharing of genealogy information benefits all of us. It's easy to submit to CFA. See the instructions on our web site at: http://www.callawayfamily.org/submitdata.htm If you would also like to have your Callaway ancestry published in the CFA Newsletter, then please send a copy of your information to me. (As a reminder, CFA does not publish personal information on the internet about living individuals.) CFA DNA Project
We now have results for 79
members in our Y-DNA project from the US, UK, France and Canada. Some amazing results are showing up from these DNA results. We thank the CFA DNA committee for their hard work in recruiting participants, and to Cameron Todd Callaway for compiling our results on the FamilytreeDNA web site, so all can view the information. Visit the site and see what's happening. If you are interested in adding your DNA results, contact the CFA DNA Project Co-ordinator, Russ Callaway at r.callaway at juno.com. The more participants we have, the more we will learn about our very early ancestors. (The DNA test is easy, private and results are secure. No personal information about participants is ever published.) http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Callaway
Editor’s note - I encourage each of
you to send in articles for the e-Newsletter. It doesn’t have to
be lengthy. It could be some "Callaway" news, a family story, a
family photo, a favorite family recipe, results from your family
line research, or any item you think would be of interest to our
readers. Send them to me, and I will take care of adding them.
In Memory
It is with
sadness that we have learned about the passing of David
Scott on December 27, 2007. His home is in Swindon in
Wiltshire England, and he was a good friend to so many
in CFA and provided so much valuable research and
support for our international Callaway genealogy. He
will be greatly missed. Our condolences are offered to
his wife Pat and all their family.
In Memory It is with sadness that we have learned from CFA Member, Lucy Gray, of Pensacola, FL, about the passing of Charlotte McGeachy Sellers. Charlotte and Lucy are sisters and both have been long time CFA Members. We send our condolences to Lucy and all of her family at this very sad time. Lucy graciously has sent us a copy of Charlotte's obituary.
Donna,
This is the
obituary of my sister, Charlotte McGeachy Sellers.
She attended her last Callaway Reunion in
Charleston, SC in 2004.
Charlotte is a
descendant of Joshua Callaway of Wilkes CO, GA
through his son, Edward Callaway of Monroe CO, GA.
Edward had a daughter, Caroline, who married Isaiah
Jeremiah Langley. Charlotte is also a descendant of
Elijah Hosea Callaway of Emanuel CO, GA and Jackson
CO, FL. E. H. Callaway was the son of Thomas
Callaway of Delaware and Jackson CO, FL. E. H.
Callaway also had a daughter, Caroline Callaway, who
married Josiah Daniel of Emanuel CO, GA and Jackson
CO, FL. So Charlotte descends from two Caroline
Callaways who lived in the same time period but
probably did not know each other.
Lucy Gray
CHARLOTTE McGEACHY SELLERS
After retiring to Pensacola, she gave generously of her time to First United Methodist Church of Pensacola, where she sang in the choir and worked with various committees for many years. She was also involved with many charities and volunteered her time tutoring elementary school children at local elementary schools. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Reuben Arthur and Vivian Daniel McGeachy, her cousins, James Nixon and Christine Daniel, and brother-in-law, Paul R. Gray. She is survived by her daughter, Lucy Sellers Smith, of Pensacola, two grandchildren who were the light of her life, Warren Smith, of Capistrano Beach, CA, and Paul Smith, of Pensacola, her sister, Lucy M. Gray, of Pensacola, her sister and brother-in law, Octavia M. and Denton R. Coker, of Pensacola, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom she loved and cherished. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, January 4, 2008, at First United Methodist Church in Pensacola, with Dr. Wesley H. Wachob officiating. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. at the church prior to the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church charities or Habitat for Humanity. In Memory It is with sadness that we hear
from Nancy Brett about the death of her aunt, Elizabeth (Jackson)
March. Our condolences go to Nancy and all her family. Elizabeth is the daughter of Mirvin Callaway and
John C. Jackson from the following line of descent:
Elizabeth March, daughter
to Mirvin Callaway Jackson (Charleston, SC) died Sunday,
January 20, 2008 at their home in Palmetto, Florida
where she lived with her husband Russell March. In Memory I would like to thank CFA
Member, Margaret Miller, for sending us this obituary
which appeared in the Wichita Eagle, Wichita, KS.
Ruth Callaway's husband, Elmer Legrand Callaway's line
of descent is as follows: Ruth I. (Gilbert)
Callaway, BELLE PLAINE, KS In Memory I would like to thank CFA
Member, Sam Geer, of Dallas, TX,
for sending us the obituary of Henrietta Sisk Callaway. She was
the wife of Robert Eugene Callaway from the following line of
descent:
Henrietta Sisk Callaway
from: The News-Reporter, Washington, GA, Thursday, September 20, 2007 http://www.news-reporter.com/news/2007/0920/Obituaries/ Funeral services for
Henrietta Sisk Callaway, 80, of Sunset Drive, Washington,
were held Saturday, September 15, 2007, at the First Baptist
Church, Washington, with Rev. Chris Townsend officiating.
Interment was in the Callaway Family Cemetery at Rayle. She
died Thursday, September 13. Callaway Cornet Band I would like to thank CFA Member, Sallie Nelson, of San Benito, TX, for sending us this link. Do you have an ancestor who might have been a member of this band? Callaway, Nebraska was named for Samuel Rogers Callaway,
second vice president and general manager of the Union
Pacific Railroad when the Wood River Grade was made from
Kearney to the new town site. The founders of this new
community at the end of the line found it fitting to
honor him with a community bearing his name.

Our
best regards, Lifetime CFA Members This month we have two new Lifetime Members of CFA. Lifetime membership is a wonderful commitment to the work ongoing of the Callaway Family Association. Congratulations and thank you to our new lifetime members, who have both been annual members for some time.
LCol. Gregory J. Burton
of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, from the following Callaway
line of descent: Greg has submitted information and pictures of his Callaway ancestors, and they were published in the Mar 2006 CFA newsletter. Geoff Callaway, who is a member of our Australian Callaway family, is currently living with his wife, Lyrian, and their children, Scott, Alyssa and Hayley, in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England. Geoff is the son of CFA members, Dr. Bruce C. Callaway and his wife, Dawn, of Sydney, Australia. Geoff and Bruce have their Callaway roots on the Isle of Wight in England. Both Geoff and Bruce are active in CFA's international research to sort out all the different Callaway/Kellaway tribes, tracing them back, in some cases, more than 500 years.
U. S. Joseph Callaway Line I would like to thank Mary Giera for sending us this RootsWeb link. There are some very good photos of Callaway grave markers in the Willow Cemetery, Haskell, Haskell Co, TX.
I think Garland Pratt and Paul
are brothers from the following Joseph Callaway line:
Elbert B. Callaway (CFA
records show his middle name was Eubank after his great
grandmother Elizabeth Eubank, but this wouldn’t be the first
time I have seen errors on a tombstone) is also from the
Joseph Callaway line: http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/tx/haskell/photos/tombstones/willow.html Noted Scottish Clans in San Antonio, Texas Ancestry And of course, Callaways are involved. Read
the
new post on the CFA Blog. It is an article written in 1911
by Mrs. James H. French. James was the mayor of San Antonio in
1880 and could likely be related to the James French who married
Keziah Callaway, daughter of Richard Callaway. There are
some errors in the genealogy in this article, which I have noted
and corrected. Because a lot has been discovered about our Callaway
Clan since 1911, it is not surprising that errors appeared.
Christopher Irvine married Lydia Callaway from the following
line of descent: U. S. Peter Callaway Line I
would like to thank Amanda Cole May for sending us this link to
a picture of Stephen
Pickney Hart. He was the husband of Mary Jane Callaway. Mary
Jane's line of descent is as follows: Thought you would like this.
Stephen Pickney Hart is at the bottom right hand side CFA Member, Gene Callaway, of Germantown, TN has just graciously donated some of his Callaway Family memorabilia to the Pontotoc County Historical Society in Mississippi. This very nice write-up in the Pontotoc newspaper followed.
Gene descends from the
Peter Callaway line as follows:
THE PONTOTOC PROGRESS Mr. and Mrs. Gene Callaway of Germantown, TN visited the museum and donated letters, documents, newspapers, books and other items of the Reverend James Render Callaway (1796-1865) and other Callaway family members, Cicero Marion Callaway, Robert Andrew Callaway and Clarence W. Callaway. Rev. Callaway, a Methodist preacher, donated eight acres for the Mount Pleasant Church, which later became Camp Ground Church. Camp Ground Methodist Church is the pioneer Methodist mother church of this area built in 1836. He and his sons erected the first building, which was made of logs. Mr. Gene Callaway collected the items from the attic of his grandmother, Mrs. Ada Brown Callaway many years ago. The Pontotoc County Historical Society will use this collection for research and is a wonderful addition to our repository.I would like to thank CFA Newsletter subscriber, Judy Howe, for sending us these tidbits. The episode of "If Walls Could Talk" was described as follows: "For Selena and Ed Walker of Washington, Ga., a call from a stranger led to the discovery of the prominent past for their Southern home". I wonder who the stranger was that called the owners of the house to tell them about its history? Donna, Also, there was an
article today in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about a Dr. Cai at
Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Cai has devised a unique method
of enhancing illegible tombstones using computer imaging. What
is unreadable by the human eye becomes crystal clear with his
method. Although I'm not sure if and when the method will
become available to the general public, I just thought I'd pass
along this interesting bit of information.
I would like
to thank Ed Stapleton for sharing his family research with us,
including some corrections and
additions for the CFA Peter Callaway master file, and some
wonderful pictures. His Callaway
line of descent is as follows: Hi Again Donna, I was reviewing the CFA family tree for Peter Callaway on Roots Web and discovered a few inaccuracies for his descendants that I would like to see fixed for future generations to see. It lists you as the contact person so that is why I am writing. Here are the issues: 1) Garner Callaway - Roots Web list his birth as "Abt 1814" and his death as "Unknown". His birth is August 22, 1810 and his death is January 9, 1891. Garner Callaway (1810-1891) is the son of Joshua Moses Callaway (1783-1879) and Rebecca Campbell (1785-1813). As you can see by the attached marriage certificates, Joshua married Rebecca Campbell on November 14, 1808 (two years before Garner's birth). Joshua was widowed and he remarried to Nancy Roles March 29, 1813. Nancy Roles was Garner's step mother.
2) You have Garner Callaway's wife listed at "Nancy Elizabeth Unknown" and her birth as "Abt 1817" and her death as "Unknown". Her actual name is Nancy Elizabeth Karnes (Callaway) and her birth is March 25, 1818 and her death is September 1, 1898. 3) You have Joshua A. Callaway listed as "Abt 1850" and his death unknown. The initial "A" is incorrect because his middle name is "Moses", just like his grandfather (also Joshua Moses Callaway). His birth is January 4, 1850 and his death is September 10, 1934. His wife is Melinda B. Wills (Callaway) and her birth is May 2, 1859 and her death is March 27, 1943.
You can see more information and pictures that Ed has submitted to
the Find A Grave web site here: Ed Stapleton, Myrtle Beach, SC Editor's Note - See additional information on this family line which Ed submitted for publication in the Dec 2006 CFA newsletter.
I would like to thank
Mary Giera for sending us this listing of the Callaways in the

Here's a nice note from Carol Sturdevant responding to the article in last month's newsletter from James Callaway about his Lyme Regis Callaway ancestors.
Hi, Donna! I would like to thank CFA Member, Betty Callaway, who lives in Yamba, New South Wales, Australia, for sending us information and pictures of her husband, William's Callaway ancestors. You can view the research that Betty has done on this family line on the CFA web site here. Also there is additional information on this family line in the August 2004 CFA Newsletter. Donna,
Really enjoy reading the
monthly letter which is recorded so professionally.
As a result of placing
my e-mail address on research sites I have been rewarded
with a Callaway contact through the 'Immigrants to Hobart'
site , that is a government initiative, in Tasmania,
Australia.
The common ancestor
between Alan (my new cousin) and my husband, William, is
g-g-grandfather William Callaway b 1827 in Timberscombe,
Somerset, England. Then the siblings William b in
England 1854 and Frank b in Tasmania 1858 are the
g-grandfathers.
However, the exciting
thing is that Alan had some photos of this family which he
has kindly sent us.
I am, in turn, sending
them to you in the hope that you are interested in adding
these more distant relatives onto your site.
