THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION
FROM BULLETIN BILL A whole year has passed since the first Bulletin was published. If any of you have not received them all, you can access the previous issues on our excellent web site, www.callawayfamily.org by clicking on Bulletin Archives, which our Webmaster, Donna Morgan, updates monthly. The contributions from many CFA members make writing the Bulletin a fairly simple task. Typing it is another story. Thanks for keeping me supplied with material. If, by some chance, you have submitted something and it doesn't appear within a month or two, please let me know so I can rectify the situation. I have been known to misplace the odd thing or two. In the last Bulletin, I mentioned that it would be great if we sent in our renewal forms in January, or in February at the latest. Well, you have responded beautifully. Martha Winkler, our Assistant Secretary, reports that she has received about 350 renewals as of January 31, which is nearly 3 times the number received by the same date last year. Congratulations! Hopefully, all the rest will arrive this month. More than half of the renewals have e-mail. By the middle of January, six new members
had joined the Callaway Family Association. They are:
Bell, Linda S. of San Jose, CA lsbell
at ix.netcom.com It is interesting to note that all 6 new members have e-mail addresses. Welcome to CFANET. One of the renewals received by Martha contained the following note: "
I will be 90 years old on Jan. 17, 2001. I have lived a good long life
and I am very thankful for that. I still live alone, take care of myself
and still drive my car. I do not have any immediate family left." As Martha says, "How many of us can expect to live to 90 - live alone and still drive? Remarkable! Late cards would be nice." Our Genealogist, Sherrill Williams, passes on the following information about other long-time CFA members: "I have just had an email from one of our long-time CFA members who has just come on board as a computer user and 'emailer'. In case no one has given you his address, here it is: dkshelledy at lisco.com . Ken Shelledy, a Charter member, has attended many CFA meetings over the years. He lives in New London, IA. Ken would have been at the meeting at Callaway Gardens, except that he had so recently lost his wife, Vera. "Ken was reporting to me the death of another valuable CFA member, Winifred Sanders. She lived in Michigan and contributed much research effort to CFA. She also was an attendee of many CFA meetings. In the last some years, Winifred was in a nursing home. She had lost her hearing and phone communication with her had become impossible. Finally, Ken had a response to one of his many queries to her son, that Winifred Sanders died in October 1999 around the age of 91. Ken is trying to get an 'obituary' from the son for publication in the CFA Journal." MEMBER BIOGRAPHY - (Removed from CFA Web Site Archives) To respect the privacy of our members, none of the biographies submitted to CFA will be posted on the CFA Web Site Newsletter Archives. CFA WEB SITE www.callawayfamily.org In last month's Bulletin, I should have mentioned a new "Moment in Time" submitted by James A. Calloway, a new CFA member and a Joseph Callaway descendent. Jim is a retired professor living in Ruston, LA. He and his wife, Mary, enjoy traveling the country playing golf and researching his Calloways. Have a look at his story about three brothers. His e-mail address is jmcalloway at earthlink.net. Also new on the Web Site, is a Link under Personal Pages. It is the Jesse Bartlett and Frances Callaway Web Site, produced by CFA Charter and LIFE member Roger Bartlett. It contains a wealth of Callaway genealogy. Roger's e-mail address is bartlett at onr.com. TO BE CONTINUED Due to the large amount of submitted material, and the need to replace my two index fingers, this Bulletin will have to be divided into two parts. Therefore, this section will be sent today, with Part 2 to follow next week. Amongst other items, it will contain a Bio by Dr. Bruce Callaway of Sydney, Australia, plus information on a fine newsletter called Kellaway Link, written by Bill Piper of Tonbridge, England. Bill is the one who submitted "A Foxy Story" for Bulletin 2001 - #1. Also to be included are reports on the work of the Genealogy and Technology Committees, by CFA Officers Sherrill Williams and Russ Callaway respectively. CFANET
BULLETIN 2001 - # 2 Just a few interesting highlights from the renewals and new memberships received in the month of January.
They are: Burton, Walter L. & Sandra K of Washington, GA lburton at nu-z.net Callaway, Thorp & Lucille F. of Germantown, TN tlcallawa at aol.com Conner, Tim of Austell, GA tfconner at bellsouth.net Smith, Mickey L. of Huntsville, AL mickeymousesmith at aol.com Wetzel, Lisa C. of Bloomington, MN WetzelLisa at hotmail.com MEMBER BIOGRAPHY - (Removed from CFA Web Site Archives) To respect the privacy of our members, none of the biographies submitted to CFA will be posted on the CFA Web Site Newsletter Archives. As Dr. Callaway has mentioned, his article on Tudor Callaways can be found in The Callaway Journal, Volume X, 1985, pages 54 - 57. Also, on page 58, is an article by Mary Funkhouser, giving more details of Bruce's very interesting background. His e-mail address is bruce at callaway.com.au. You can visit four areas researched by Dr. Callaway: In the next issue of the Bulletin, there will be an International Bio on John Warwick Kellaway of Hamilton, New Zealand, who has written "The Caillouet Kellaway Chronicles". Russ Callaway, CFA 2nd Vice President and Technologist, has submitted some one-liners to add some humor to the Bulletin. They will be interspersed throughout each issue. If you don't like them, Russ' e-mail address is r.callaway at juno.com . Here's the first one.
On a more serious note, Russ has sent us a report on: THE CD PROJECT "I am having the 1790 - 1860 census (271 pages) scanned to produce images that can be OCR'd into Word documents. I have three volunteers to do the OCR work so far. They are: Andrea Callaway, Geoff Callaway, Kermit Bridges, and myself. Anyone wishing to help can e-mail me and I will send them a part of the image files to be OCR'd and put into the MS/WORD format." Russ tells me that OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition - the way a computer changes images into text (an image of perhaps 200K bytes is changed into 35K bytes). IN MEMORIAM Martha House, of Huntsville, AL wrote on Feb. 2 to say: "Maybe you would want to include an announcement in Part 2 about the death of my sister, CHLORENE CALLOWAY JONES, age 84, on January 30, 2001 in Crossett, Arkansas. She was a Charter Member and had attended the CFA meetings faithfully for the past several years. "A descendant of the Joseph Calloway lineage, her parents were Joe Lee and Naughvelle Futch Calloway, of Laran, Louisiana." On Feb. 6, Eloise Calloway, of Crossett, AR (wife of Billy Calloway) gave me some more information on the family connections, which will be of interest to you. "Chlorene Jones was the oldest child of what is called 'Victor's Clan' in CFA. She is a sister to Victor Calloway. She is the 2nd one of the 12 children to die. Ten still living and all were here for funeral on Feb. 2, 2:00 PM. Burial in Pinewood Memorial Park at Crossett, AR." Eloise later described the whole remaining family, oldest to youngest: Sallie Ham - Monticello, AR, Allie Cantley - Crossett, AR, Leola Burns - Strong, AR (mother of CFA Director, Connie Sherrill Burns), Sudie Garner - El Dorado, AR, Victor Calloway - Boston, MA (our Annual Meeting Chairman), Billy Calloway - Crossett, AR, Martha House - Huntsville, AL, Joann Smiley - Shreveport, LA, Wayne Calloway - Strong, AR, Elaine Dees - Hermitage, AR. The thing that is remarkable, to me at least, is that 9 of the 10 are CFA members (only Wayne is not) and all 9 (plus Chlorene) were at the 25th Annual Meeting at Callaway Gardens in October 2000. Eloise (who married Billy Calloway) goes on to say: "Maybe they live so long because they get together and laugh so much, wherever it be. So much love for each other, and others!!!" Speaking of get-togethers, Carole Romano, State/Regional Chairman, requested a notice as follows: TEXAS
CALLAWAY PICNIC
GENEALOGY COMMITTEE REPORT Sherrill Williams, of Unicoi, TN reports on the work of the Genealogy Committee, which was formed in November 2000 to assist in maintaining the US Callaway records. A Supplement to Bulletin 2000 - #10 was sent on Nov. 11, outlining the project and calling for volunteers. The CFA Genealogy Committee project was launched just before the holidays. Response to the "call for volunteers" was good. However, we still need volunteers for certain family lines. New readers of the CFANET Bulletin may not know about this project. At the last Annual Meeting of CFA in October 2000, it was agreed to distribute the CFA members' files, now maintained by the Genealogist, among volunteer members. We are trying to match the volunteer with his/her own ancestral family line. There are several reasons for distributing the files: 1. Most
of the CFA membership knows their connection to the two major American branches of the Callaway family - Peter of Maryland and Joseph
of Virginia. CFA members' files consist of pedigree and family group charts, correspondence and other data. The charts are copies; the originals have been sent to the CFA Archives for safekeeping. The files are arranged in the filing cabinets alphabetically by member's name, so it takes some time to go through all the files and sort them by ancestor. These files will be shipped to the volunteers as quickly as possible. Some have been shipped, and others are nearly ready for shipping. Volunteers are asked to maintain the files on their ancestor, organize them, and reply to queries. Those who have the Family Tree Maker program may input the data from the charts according to the guidelines of the Technology Committee. If you do not have the FTM program, the material can be organized in chart form for use by other volunteers of the Technology Committee. Some of the correspondence in the files contains genealogical information. This should be extracted, then the original correspondence sent to the CFA Archives. CFA members have
volunteered as follows: II Isaiah & Zachariah Callaway (Wm. J., Wm. Sr., Peter) - Lou Brown johnlbrown at ispchannel.com III Other Sussex Co., DE Callaway families - Mary Ann Parker jsolfparker at juno.com JOSEPH
CALLAWAY of VIRGINIA line: Volunteers are still needed
for the following family lines: JOSEPH
CALLAWAY of VIRGINIA UNATTACHED
CALLAWAY FAMILIES If anyone has another "unattached" Callaway line, please step forward, identify your line, and volunteer for it. Sherrill U. Williams, CFA Genealogist SherrillUWilliams at prodigy.net KELLAWAY NEWSLETTER On the International scene again, Bill Kellaway Piper, of Tonbridge, England has produced a newletter called KELLAWAY LINK. The first 1/2 of this issue is devoted to "The Callaways", and I am sure you all may want to read it. You can access it at: http://members.tripod.co.uk/dreycott/newslett.htm Bill's Newsletter has a very interesting format, and you will find a number of useful links, including one to a large group of Kelloways in Newfoundland, the 10th province of Canada. Hopefully, Bill can be persuaded to give us his International Bio for the April issue of the CFANET Bulletin. And it would be great to have his Genealogical Home Page on the CFA Web Site, under LINKS - Personal Pages. There may be some items that I have
missed, but it's only another couple of weeks till the March issue of
the Bulletin is due, so until then, good bye. P.S. If you did not receive Part 1 of this Bulletin (or any other Bulletin), you can find it on the CFA Web Site www.callawayfamily.org ALL RIGHTS RESERVED - Copyright © 2001 Callaway Family Association |
