The First Great
Grandson
Congratulations to
Jim Sands on the birth of his first Great Grandson and
the beginning of another Callaway generation!
Donna,
Our first great grandson, Kaden Patrick Hattaway,
was born to Krystal and Ryan Hattaway. Our
daughter, Lisa Sands King is the new grandmother.
He was born November 20, 2007 at Fort Wainwright in
Fairbanks, Alaska where his Dad, Ryan, is stationed
in the US Army.

As you know we are part of the
"mystery" Callaways that can only be traced back to
Thomas Callaway in Windsor County, North Carolina.
Lisa got to fly up there and visit her new grandson
for a week.
Hope you had a nice Christmas,
Jim Sands

DISTRICT
COURT.
Weatherby Acquitted-Squire Haw to Have Another
Trial-Defendants in Nuisance Cases Had Better Settle
Up.
Monday was an interesting day in the district
court, and the spectators, of whom the court is
rarely entirely free, increased in numbers. In the
first place, there was that suit on the
LAW AND CHANCERY side of the docket known as 3111.
Wherein E.M.
Calloway was plaintiff and James Layden and others
were defendants. Wherein Mrs. Calloway, the
plaintiff, claimed $5,000 damages, because, as she
alleged, she had been injured by the drunkenness of
her husband, induced in whole or in part by liquor
furnished by the defendant. The trial occupied four
days and the jury were out two nights, finding at
last for the plaintiff and assessing her damages at
$775.00. And thereat both sides rejoiced. The
plaintiff, because she got damages, and the
defendant, because she didn't get any more.

Everyone please
welcome Pitt Carlisle Tarrant, who lives in Tennessee, as
the first
new CFA newsletter subscriber for 2008. With the first name Pitt, he
must be a Callaway. Indeed he is, and has graciously sent us
information about his family line. He descends from Ella Beneta Pitt Callaway from the following line of descent:
Peter Callaway
John Callaway
Edward Callaway
Joshua Callaway
Rev. Joshua Sanford Callaway and first wife Mary Milner
Pitt Milner Callaway, Sr.
Ella Beneta Pitt Callaway Donna,
This message is sent with hopes that your address is current
and the website for the Callaway's is still active. I am
the third generation "Pitt" named for my grandfather Pitt
Milner Carlisle. He was the son of Moses Nathanial Carlisle
married to Ella Callaway mentioned in the
Sep 2005 CFA newsletter. In the newsletter it mentions
Pitt Milner Callaway. He was my mother's great
grandfather. "Tis a long story, but an interesting one that
I will abbreviate:
I was born the youngest of four children to James R. Tarrant
and Inice Elise Carlisle Tarrant. I have two brothers, Paul
Milner Tarrant and James Richard Tarrant, and one sister
Inice (Neecie) Elise Tarrant. My mother's father, Pitt
Milner Carlisle was born to Moses Nathanial Carlisle and
Ella Callaway Carlisle on July 8, 1876. Prior to his
marriage to my grandmother, Inice Waller (Birmingham, AL) he
was married and had at least one child (Dorothy) and other
details of which I am unaware. Dr. Carlisle (called Dr. as
he was a pharmacist) married Inice Waller and they bore one
child (my mother). At the same time of my mother's birth,
Dr. Carlisle left his family in Birmingham and moved to the
Panama City, FL area where he owned a sand pit and brick
mill. Dr. Carlisle returned to Birmingham and he and my
grandmother re-married. Around 1957 or 1958, Dr. Carlisle
traveled to the state Washington to visit with his daughter
from his first marriage and was there for a period of time.
Dr. Carlisle died unexpectedly in Seattle, WA in 1959. It
is believed that he was cremated, though my mother is
unaware of the disposition of his remains.
My mother has recollections of Mrs. Lillian
West. I mentioned this to her just the other day and she
immediately recalled Mrs. West's association (perhaps)
ownership of the newspaper in Panama City. She recalled
when her mother and father remarried that Mrs. West sent her
some stationery as a gift. She further recalled having
contact with her or Mrs. West's daughter around the time of
Pitt Carlisle's death. Having said all of this, it would be
interesting to know if any of the Callaways connected to the
Callaway Family Association have further information on the
Alabama/Florida Callaways.
As a side note, my Mother just recently moved and we were
looking through some heirlooms and found some rather old
family correspondences. One of which was a letter written
by Moses Carlisle to one of his sons, Horace, about his
experiences as a soldier and dispatch courier during the
Civil War. He wrote this letter in 1918 and was
surprisingly clear in his writing, but difficult to read all
of his handwriting.
Looking forward to hearing from you or others that may have
more information concerning my mother's line...

Other C/K Lines
I would
like to thank James (Jim) Callaway for sharing this information
about his Callaway family line. William Callaway was born in
Lyme Regis in 1832 and was a mariner.
Dear Donna,
I have been tracing my family history for some time now and have
gained a lot of information about my Callaway family tree. Some
has been offered by Carol Battin in the US and Christine Dawson
from the UK, but most is of my own research.

During my summer holidays I
went to the Channel Island of Alderney to trace my ggg uncle
William Callaway. William was born in 1832 in Lyme Regis
England, he was a seaman and in 1856 was awarded the Silver
Gallantry Medal from the Royal National Lifeboat Institute for
saving a life at sea. The following is from a passage from the
Lifeboat Gallantry:
William Callaway, Seaman
22nd August 1856: During squally weather near Lyme Regis,
Dorset, the SECRET, a small boat taking part in a regatta,
capsized and filled, throwing three men into the sea. The
incident was seen by Mr. Callaway who was alone in another boat.
He turned back to the casualty and was able to save one of the
men. He then took off his clothes, plunged in and tried vainly
to save another man. Mr. Callaway had been thrown a rope by a
trawler from the port side, but such was the speed of the boat,
he was dragged under the water and forced to let go of the man
he was trying to save, who by this time was senseless and had
drowned.
Finding this information
really got me interested in William and I wondered if I could
find more about his life. I later found William had moved to the
Isle of Alderney. By this time, 1861, he was a master
mariner and on the Census of 1861 is aboard the ship called
Ajax which he co-owned (with Greenfield) along with a Thomas
Mills, mate from Bridgport and Frederick Bryant, boy from Lyme.
This ship was a cutter. In the 1861 census in England his
children; Emily, Ellen and Reginald are all boarders at a
school, Colyton Devon run by the misses Seaward. Emily was 8
yrs. Ellen 7 yrs. and Reginald 5 yrs. His first wife Sarah had
died in 1851.
William married for a second time to a lady called Lavinia and
in the next censi of 1871, 1881, 1891 she is down as
the landlady and shop owner of the Army and Navy Inn on
Alderney. Along with other family members, he also had shares in
another boat, this time a ketch called the THOMAS and ELIZABETH.
46 tons, so it must have been quite a size.

St. Anne's church on
Alderney is known as the Cathedral of the Channel Islands, and
is quite impressive. I began to search the headstones, starting
from one end of the church Cemetery going along a row at a time.
After a long time I came across a headstone where I could see
Lavinia Crago. I then started to remove some of the weathering
and to my amazement found the following inscription;
In the memory of
James Lusby
native of Chard Somerset
who died on the 18th July 1839
aged 35 years
This stone was erected by his
widow as a token of sincere
affection for one of the best
of husbands
Also in loving memory of
Lavinia Crago
widow of the above
and wife of William Callaway
who passed away October 22nd 1900
aged 90 years
Also of Emily Amelia Callaway
who died November 6th 1906
aged 46 years
here the weary are at rest

After unearthing this it really made me feel quite elated and
yet sad, so I then set about finding William's grave. I again
searched the cemetery and whilst doing so found one belonging to
Christopher Callaway who had owned the public house before
William and it is possible that he came from the Isle of Wight
and again possible that he was a cousin, (re Warwick Kellaway).
His headstone reads as follows:
In loving memory of
Christopher Henry Albert Callaway
who departed this life on the
8th March 1900 aged 66 years
A light from our household gone
A voice we loved is still
A place is vacant in our home
which can never be filled
Also of Ellen Callaway
wife of the above
who fell asleep in Jesus
on the 24th February 1907
in her
65th year
The words
seem to mean so much to both families. Christopher fathered 18
children and I understand at least 2 went to America.
I went back to the grave of Lavinia and started to look at the
one to the left which was badly weathered and saw an etching of
William. As I inspected it further saw the name of his son,
Reginald John and of his daughter in law.
Henrietta Ruth Craven
widow of the above
who fell asleep August 18th 1903
aged 52 years
I do know that Reginald died in 1889. I think William died
between 1902 and 1910, as he is mentioned in the 1901 census,
but due to the Germans who occupied the Island in the 2nd world
war, all information has been lost. The islanders say that all
records were destroyed.
I am attaching some photos of the church, public house and some
of Bray Harbour from where William would have sailed.
This has been a fascinating
journey and I feel a sense of achievement, but I now want to
research further the vessels he had and the Medal he won during his life.
I hope you find this article interesting and if you would like
to publish this in the Callaway Journal please feel free to do
so.
Regards from the cold windy Village of Aldbrough on the east
coast of Yorkshire,

the following information:
From the 1860 Meigs, Adams Co., OH census.
William Callaway 27 OH
Margaret 23 KY
John W 4 OH
Stephen F 2 OH
Lafayette 9/12 OH
Margaret 70 PA (assume this is William’s mother)
On the 1850 Meigs, Adams Co., OH census is the
following family. (probably the above William’s
family)
John Callaway 84 MD
Margaret 60 PA
Andrew 25 OH
William 18 OH
Stephen and Lafayette are listed in the 1880 census,
still in OH living with the McDaniel family in
Union, Highland Co., OH.

the Peter line as follows:
Peter Callaway
Peter Callaway
Thomas Callaway
John Callaway
William Callaway
Can
anyone verify this family line?
Once

PRATHER FUNERAL SUNDAY
Passed Away Thursday Evening of Last Week; Came Here 37 Years
Ago.
Daniel William Prather was born near Des Moines, Iowa,
February 14, 1866, and passed away at his home in Ruthven, Iowa,
February 2, 1939, at the age of 72 years, 11 months, and 18
days. His parents were Martin and Elizabeth Prather and when a
young man he moved with his folks to Audubon county, where he
grew to manhood.
On February 25, 1890, he was united in marriage to
Mary Evaline Calloway and eight
children, three boys and five girls, were born to this union.
The family lived in Audubon and Polk county where the
deceased was engaged in the lumber business, until 1902 when
they moved to a farm on the north side of Silver lake, south of
Ruthven. They lived for a short time on a farm near Gillett
Grove, and then returned to the vicinity south of Ruthven. In
1934 they retired from farming and moved to Ruthven where the
deceased made his home until his death. Mr. Prather served as
town marshal in Ruthven for about three years. Following a
paralytic stroke last September he was forced to give up this
position, and while he rallied from this attack and was able to
be about our town again, he had lost so much of his strength and
vitality he was unable to survive a recent illness with
pneumonia and passed away last Thursday evening at 8:30.
He is survived by his devoted wife, three sons, Claude and
Howard of Ruthven and Harold of Graettinger, and four daughters,
Mrs. D.D. Waterman of Ruthven, Mrs. Arthur Roberts of Royal,
Mrs. Roy Broadie of Estherville and Mrs. Walter Pitcher of
Emmetsburg. One daughter, Bertha, passed away in 1928. Mr.
Prather is also survived by one brother, Ed Prather of Ruthven,
one sister, Mrs. Annie Howard, of Des Moines, 21 grandchildren,
and one great grandchild.
Mr. Prather was a member of the Methodist church and well
liked by all who knew him. His last words, "I have knowingly
wronged no one, and I have always tried to live a temperate
life," spoken as death came to him, characterized his entire
life. He was devoted to his family, interested in their welfare,
and always striving for the better things of life.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in
Ruthven last Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Belden
Weikel, pastor of the church, officiating, Rev. Weikel chose the
20th and 21st verses of Jude for the text of his sermon.
Mrs. A.L. Bragg, Mrs. Lewis Capener, Harry Nelson and J.H.
Thatcher sang, "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," "Sweetly Resting" and
"Going Down the Valley One by One" with Mrs. Merle McGranahan at
the piano.
Five grandsons and one nephew were the pallbearers.
Burial took place in Crown Hill cemetery.
The Lightle Funeral Home of Ruthven had charge of funeral
arrangements.

Query # 460
Subject – Garner Callaway
Submitter - Robert Stansbury
email - rastansbury at bellsouth.net
Hello Donna,
I noted the chart of
Garner Callaway in this issue. Have the CFA genealogists
reviewed this for accuracy? Especially the ZACHARIAH4,
WILLIAM3, WILLIAM2,
PETER1. I have seen conflicting information
on this part of the information.
I am descended from
Garner and have information to fill in this chart. ELLA A.
CALLAWAY, b. Abt. 1874, WV. is my Great Grandmother.
I would also like to
hear if any other descendants of Garner might have seen
this.
Sincerely,
Robert Stansbury
Editor's
Note - Clarification of the descent of Peter to Zachariah was
published in the
August 2005 newsletter, response to
query # 294.
I am
repeating this query from last month's newsletter because I have
a valid email address now. If anyone can help Linda, please
respond.

Callaway from the Peter line

I have searched,
researched and questioned until I don't know where else to
turn. I have always been told I descend from PETER CALLAWAY
as follows:
Peter Callaway
John Callaway/Mary Gould
Edward
Callaway/Elizabeth ??
John Callaway/Bethany
Arnold
Isaac Callaway/Sarah
Anderson
Richard STAMPS
Callaway/Ellen Jane (Jane Ellen) Kemp
Sara(h) LARKIN Callaway
/ John Fletcher Johnson
Lula Johnson/Charley

Rosco Johnson Sharp
Me.
My questions have come
about since I have been trying to join the DAR under John
Callaway of Wilkes Co., Ga.
I have been told by a
member of DAR that my Isaac isn't the Isaac of John
Callaway. But I have a copy of a will that lists an Isaac
Callaway as a descendent. As you can see, I have
emphasized the STAMPS and LARKIN names of my ancestors. I
find AMY STAMPS listed as a spouse of a Callaway and I find
LARKIN Callaway associated with (I think) the Flanders
Callaway and Jemima Boone. Can anyone help me out here? I
really want to join DAR and I have paperwork in on another
ancestor but would also like to add John Callaway if I am a
descendent of that line.
Thanks for any help you
can give me.

Edward George
Kellaway, born 1873 in Bristol, England.
In his teens he went to North America and His family
lost contact with him. Does anyone know what happened?
Did he produce any descendants?
He was my great uncle.

Note -
I found an Edward Kellaway on the 1910 Suffolk Co., New York
census in East Hampton. He is listed as 37 years old, and
single. He and his parents born in England. His occupation
is fisherman and he immigrated in 1888. Perhaps this is the
same Edward George Kellaway.

Hi,
I'm editing a book to be published shortly by the Nesbitt/Nisbet Society about N/N artists. One is Thomas Callaway Nisbet, who married Ellen Hollis, in West Bromwich in 1858. He was born in Kingstone and christened 30 May 1821 at Saint Mary’s, Portsea, the son of Thomas Nesbet and Kezia. He was a distinguished lithographer with work in several public collections. Callaway is an uncommon name - any information on his ancestry would be welcome. Thanks!
