THE CALLAWAY FAMILY ASSOCIATION
CFANET e-NEWSLETTER
January 2003
Volume IV No. 1
The
Editor's Corner
As
most of you are aware, I have volunteered to take over editorship
of the CFA
e-Newsletter. I have some very big shoes (metaphorically speaking
of course) to fill, but I will do my best. It will be a big
challenge, but also rewarding in so many ways. I will be able to
meet many of you, at least on-line, and I will enjoy that very
much. So here we go – starting out with a big Happy New Year wish
to all of you.
I
encourage each of you to send in articles for the e-Newsletter. It
doesn’t have to be lengthy. It could be some “Callaway” news, a
family story, a family photo, a favorite family recipe, results
from your family line research, or any item you think would be of
interest to our readers. Send them to me, and I will take care of
adding them. My email address is
, and I look forward to hearing from you.
And
finally, there is now a new section in the e-Newsletter called
“The Query Corner”.
If you would like to post a query about your “Callaway” Family
Genealogy for our readers to see and hopefully respond to, just
send it to me. Include your contact information if you would like
to be contacted directly. Otherwise, they can send their response
to me and I will post it in the next e-Newsletter.

News from
the CFA Officers
From the
President's Corner
Happy New Year! A new year always means a new beginning. We
pause to reflect on what we have accomplished and we make plans
for the future. Our top priority for 2003 is growth in
membership. I challenge every CFA member to recruit one new
member this year. Look around you -- recruit a family member or a
friend with C/K connections. Our membership has declined. In
order to keep CFA a vibrant, active, working organization we must
continue to recruit new members.
We have achieved much but there is still more to be done. We are
fortunate to have our excellent bulletin, visit our CFA website,
read our wonderful Journal. Avail yourselves of our
magnificent research materials. Order the new CFA CD-Rom.
We continue to abstract the C/K names from the 1930 Census. As
soon as it is completed it will be released for your use.
In January you will receive your renewal form. Send your dues in
promptly. Let us know if you have a change in your mail address
or in your e-mail. Send us your family news or share a short C/K
story with us. Keep in touch - Keep active and Keep working with
us. Thank you.

From the Vice
President’s Corner
I
hope that all of the CFA membership had a Happy Christmas. Ramona
and I certainly did! (Despite a couple travel complications with
the airlines.) Now back at home and the New Year is upon us, it is
the time I use to reflect on the past year and look forward to the
upcoming year. As part of this, I thought about the CFA, and
wanted to share some of these thoughts with you.
While
Ramona and I were visiting my parents over Christmas in Des
Moines, I noticed a restaurant with a sign saying “established in
1974”. It caught my eye because that is close to the year that I
graduated from High School in Des Moines, and I realized that it
is also close to the year that the CFA was formed.
Let’s
all take a moment to remember and say thank you to all of those
who took an idea and made it a reality. It took time, money, and
determination, and a special pioneering spirit to start the CFA,
and to keep it going.
If a
generation is about 20-25 years, then our CFA is in its second
generation of existence, and this means that the challenges, as
well as opportunities for our association has changed from early
forming, maturing, and growing days.
Our
CFA is primarily a genealogical association with a diverse
membership. We have skilled genealogical researchers, genealogical
enthusiasts, and social and family members.
Our
skilled genealogical researchers have traced some lines of study
back almost half a millennium to England, and there is possible
genealogical link that could trace back a line over a millennium
to France. I find this a fascinating possibility, and who knows
what research discoveries we will find over the next quarter of a
century.
It is
the research of the CFA, which entices our genealogical
enthusiasts, which includes me, to be a member of the CFA and
provide technical, administrative, and financial support, for its
activities.
It is
the fellowship of the CFA, which entices our social and family
members, to renew their membership to the CFA This is probably our
largest segment of membership, and just by their membership,
provides funds for our CFA researchers. It is the well-planned
annual CFA meetings, along with the state’s CFA picnics, which
provide its social activities that melds this group with our
genealogical researchers and enthusiasts.
As we
are in the next generation of CFA, we need to have something of
interest to the generation that has been born during first
generation of our association. While we do not have the resources
to be in the education business, we can provide some materials
that help young people appreciate how genealogy relates to other
fields of study and maybe entice them to find an interest in
genealogy.
Could
we put together some files on our CFA web site that relates an
element of genealogy with an element from another related field of
study?
Geography and Math:
How
many miles are there from England to Virginia?
How many miles from Virginia to the city that you live in?
Language:
Are
there short stories from Canterbury Tales, or works of
Shakespeare, which are of middle English that we could relate to
genealogy?
If we find a French line, can we “Parley-vous francais?”
How
many ways can you spell the CFA namesake?
Science:
Can we
list science/building accomplishments by our lines of study?
History:
I know
we have lines of study that can be traced to activities of
significant historical events.
Arts
and Music:
Have
there been any significant artists/musicians in our line of study?
Others?
What
do you think? These are only quick suggestions. Is this something
that we should consider doing? Any volunteers to help contribute
ideas and organize this?
Have a
Happy New Year!

CFA Vice President
From the
Secretary’s Corner
As I
begin my 7th year as Secretary of the Callaway Family
Association I wish everyone a happy 2003. I would like to take
this opportunity to express my gratitude for everyone who makes my
job with this wonderful organization run smoothly. Perhaps I
should first explain what my duties are as Secretary. I keep two
databases of the Callaway Family Association, an “active Database”
and what I call “CFA Master Database.”
The
“Active” listings include the names and information of everyone
who is a member during the current year and during the past three
years. This is the list of members (and past members) who receive
renewal notices, CFA Annual Meeting notices and Pioneer Trails
notices every year. Only the current year members receive CFA
Journals.
The
“Master” database includes the names and most current information
on everyone who has ever been a member of the Callaway Family
Association since its charter in 1975.
Both databases are kept up to date as I receive new
addresses, phone numbers, name changes, etc. The categories that
store information on each member are: Name, Address, City, State,
Zip (9-digit), Phone #, Fax #, E-mail, Spouse’s name, ID/Status
(what type of member…ACTIVE, JOINT, SUPPORTING, LIFE or JUNIOR), a
record of the amount for current membership, and a record of
membership. The record of membership on both databases include
the years a member has paid dues. For example, a reading such as
C Member 75-79,83-90,96-98 tells me that this person joined
CFA as a charter member and stayed active through 1979. In 1983
they joined again (thus becoming a REINSTATED member that year)
and remained a member through 1990 when they discontinued paying
dues. In 1996 they were REINSTATED again and paid dues through
1998, etc.
The
year that a person became a member will be the first date of the
membership record.
Members change membership categories frequently. Only
the current category is recorded on the database as there is no
need to keep them from year to year. A person may pay dues to be
an ACTIVE member one year and a SUPPORTING member the next year.
Or a couple will be JOINT members and the next year only pay
membership for one.
As information such as address, zip and e-mail change
frequently, it is very important that YOU report these changes to
me as soon as possible. I receive notes from irate members each
year saying they did not receive their journal, etc. When I check
the records I find that they have changed addresses and have not
reported it to the CFA. I keep a duplicate copy of all labels I
send for each mailing and can check readily to see if the mailings
have included your label.
Renewal notice labels for 2003 have been sent to
Assistant Secretary, Rusty Callaway and you should be receiving
this notice soon. PLEASE fill it out and return it with your
check as soon as possible. REMEMBER, the CFA membership year runs
from JANUARY through DECEMBER. So if you just paid your 2002 dues
in November of this year, you will still be receiving your 2003
renewal notice.
In addition to keeping these databases, as Secretary I
also send condolence notices on behalf of the CFA to families of
members who have died. I correspond frequently with those who
have questions about membership or CFA in general and I up-date
and type all membership and new member forms for the CFA.
As secretary, I send out a 5 page new member packet
when new members join. This includes a personal letter from me as
well as memorabilia form, family
group
sheet, 5-generation ancestor chart and a biography sheet. These
sheets are directed to Connie Sherrill, our Historian.
I have enjoyed serving as CFA Secretary and look
forward to another good year. We have a wonderful system of
organization using volunteers from many states. An application
for membership involves Rusty Callaway, Assistant Secretary (GA),
Judy Ostler, Secretary (TX), Heide Callaway, Treasurer (NC), Connie
Sherrill, Historian (AR) and Donna Morgan, Journal Distributor
(NC). Rusty receives the application and check, forwards the
check to Heide and the application to Judy. Judy records,
notifies Donna to send journal and mails new member packet to
member who in turn mails biographical and genealogical information
to Connie Sherrill. This system has worked for 27 years and has a
great system of check and balance. It works well for me.

Greetings to all
the CFA e-newsletter readers. I had a very exciting and rewarding
experience this past November, that I thought you might be
interested in hearing about. I went to Athens, Greece to run in
the Athens Marathon, a distance of 26.2 miles, held on November 3,
2002. This marathon is actually the original marathon course,
from Marathon (Greece) to Athens, with the finish in the Olympic
Stadium in Athens, referred to in Athens as "the marble stadium."
This is, of course, the same route that will be taken by
marathoners in the 2004 Olympics to be held in Athens.
I ran as a member of the Georgia chapter of the Arthritis
Foundation's Joints in Motion team. We trained for over six
months locally, and raised $4000 each for the Arthritis Foundation
in order to participate in this marathon, or marathons in Honolulu
or Amsterdam. This was my second marathon, the first being last
year in Honolulu for the Arthritis Foundation as well. Both
marathons have been wonderful experiences, but I did better
physically this year, and finished with slightly better time this
year at 5 hours, 10 minutes. The thrill this year, of course, was
running THE marathon course, and finishing in Olympic Stadium. An
added benefit was running with only 8000 runners this year, as
opposed to 25,000 runners last year in Honolulu.

in the race yourself, but for doing so much good for such a worthy
cause.)

The sales of the
CFA Research Data CD are going well. We have over 55 of them in
the hands of our members. I will be setting up a newsletter for
these users after the first of the year. The purpose will be to
learn of any problems now existing with the CD operations and
ideas of improvement in operation and content as well. The
scanning of the 1790-1860 census is progressing well, albeit
slowly. I have done 100 of the total of 270 so far. Because I am
learning the OmniPro scanning program and the 'inners' of the MS
WORD program, some page’s complexities have taken an hour to
complete. Usually it takes about 6 minutes per page. The purpose
of this work is to provide an exact copy of the researcher's work
on the CD. Originally this census was typed and never saw the
computer until I had it transcribed into a Dbase file. This new
work will allow the users to see the exact copy as it was
originally presented by the researcher. I will also be asking for
any possible corrections as I would like to make this set of files
be the ultimate accurate record of all of the CFA
files. Often, we know more than the actual census canvasser.

While
visiting a friend in Pensacola, FL, prior to Christmas, we were
shopping in a Christian bookstore when I spotted a small paperback
book by Phil CALLAWAY. From the title I knew it somehow involved
golf, about which I know very little, even though two sons play.
Although I didn't have time to scan it very well, I bought it
anyway.... the last remaining copy on the Devotional shelf. At
this writing I still haven't read it
through, but here is a bit more about it and Phil. The name of the
book is "With God on the Golf Course" (2002, Harvest House
Publishers, Eugene, OR). It is inspirational.
Quoting from the book: Phil writes books, speaks at conferences,
golf tournaments, camps, marriage retreats, Promise Keepers. A
frequent guest on national radio and TV, partners with Compassion,
an international Christian child development agency. His writings
have won more than a dozen international awards and have been
translated into 5 languages. His five-part video series "The Big
Picture" is being viewed in 80,000 churches worldwide. Other HH
books: "Who Put My Life on Fast-Forward?", "Making Life Rich
Without Money", "I Used to Have Answers, Now I Have Kids". With
humor and candor, sparkling, warmly told stories capture amusing
and bemusing experiences of life while sharing timeless spiritual
lessons.
He lives in Alberta, Canada, with his (childhood sweetheart) wife,
2 sons, and a daughter. Website:

The Last Will and Testament of Ebenezer Callaway
I copied this
exactly like it was written with capitals, etc. One word I can't
decipher. I have ELI b1753 d 1794 which would make him 36, about,
when EBENEZER wrote his will. The others were younger. I feel so
Blessed to be able to have this will and the inventories that go
with it. And to know the state of EBENEZER'S 'heart' endears him
more to me, his way down the road granddaughter. Thanks for the
opportunity to add a little more to the CALLAWAY saga.

The following was graciously submitted by CFA Member, Jim Calloway
of Ruston, LA:
A news article published in the Mannsville Monitor Newspaper,
Mannsville, OK on April 24, 1914
“J. R. (John Right)
Calloway, seventy-two years of age, died on Friday last and all
the neighbors who were present mourned him for dead. Hearing that
the old man was dead, "Squire" Fine came and examined the body
which was cold as ice, but thought he could detect a little sign
of the spark of life still existing. He examined the tongue and
found it
as dry as a chip. He called for some whiskey and Miss Pearl Rich
appeared with a bottle, and the "Squire" held the mouth open while
Miss Pearl Rich poured the whiskey into his mouth. Directly a
little perspiration appeared upon his forehead, and then he looked
around with wide open eyes. He had returned to life to the joy of
his wife, relatives and visitors. Mr. Calloway is subject to
these spells, and not long ago fainted and fell on the Rock Island
right-of-way and was carried home.”
Uncle Right managed to survive this ordeal and lived another year
or so afterward, passing on Feb 9, 1915. His son, James Adams
Callaway (also mentioned in the article) had already expired on
June 25, 1912.
Squire (Vinett Alfanso) Fine was nearly related to J. R. His
wife, Lucinda, was a half-sister to my grandmother, James Adams
Callaway.
Best wishes,
Jim Calloway

What
was Callaway Co., Missouri’s position on the Civil War?
Missouri, and the nation, were in turmoil. South Carolina seceded
from the Union on December 20th, 1860 and rapidly other southern
states were following. In February of 1861, a state convention had
been called in Jefferson City, and later moved to St. Louis, to
decide Missouri's position in the conflict. On March 4, 1861 the
convention published its results and found there was "No adequate
cause to impel Missouri to dissolve her connection with the
Federal Union."
Callaway County was pro-Southern in nature
and was decidedly against war. Mass meetings had been held all
over the county since President Lincoln's election in November of
1860. The outcome of all of the meetings was that while no one
wanted to see the Union divide, if the South seceded, we should
let them go without military intervention.
Many
speeches were made and the overwhelming sentiment was that we
could not support the Union in attacking the South and that we
would defend our own state from Federal intervention.

Wrapping
it Up
January is Renewal Month for the CFA. Please, if you haven’t
already, renew your membership. And while you are at it, ask a
family member to join as well. We only thrive through our members.
In an effort to help the association grow, I sent an email
invitation to each person who has signed our CFA Guest Book (95 in
all) touting our laurels and inviting them to join. Hopefully,
this will encourage some web site visitors to join.
