Looking for the family of a Thomas Calloway/Callaway. He is mentioned in a book called "Tennessee Cousins", by Worth S Ray. In this book he is said to have had a daughter, who married a JOHN SHIRLEY, while living in Bedford Co, MD. I am descended from John Shirley and have not been able to find the surname of his wife, CHARITY. Does anyone know of the Thomas Calloway family I am talking about? He moved from Bedford Co, MD and at least one of his sons moved into Tennessee. Any help anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Regarding the previous message about Charity Calloway-I forgot to mention any dates. Also I forgot to mention that I have found "Charity" daughters (and grandaughters) in the Peter Callaway family and the Joseph Callaway family, besides Thomas Callaway's family. But I don't have dates at this time for them. My John Shirley was born Nov 1728 Frederick County, Maryland. He married a CHARITY (last name unknown for sure). Charity was b. 1723 and d. 1817. They are both buried in in a family plot in a small cemetery on the Nelson farm, midway between Newry, Pennsylvania and Catfish, near the James Hammet farm. It is also known as the Kladder Cemetery, Blair Co. PA. The known children of John Shirley and Charity were: Alice;Sarah;George b. 1761(my line); If anyone can shed any light, please do. It will be appreciated so much.

Your website posts Mary Callaway b. Somerset Co., MD about 1710, as the same Mary who appears as wife in William Kinney's (of the plantation, Desarte) will of 1770. Since there were multiple William Kinneys in the area at the time, could someone please share with the Kinney family archive what document with copy that proves the Mary Callaway connection as wife of William Kinney of Desarte? Despite extensive work in Somerset and Sussex Co., DE, such a document has escaped our detection. We would be most pleased at this Callaway connection. If proven, we can add about 6000 individuals to your Callaway descendancy tree. Thanks. --Tom Kinney, historian and author of "Kinney Tales and Trails"

I am looking for information on my G-G Grandfather, Christopher Dix Callaway and his son Frederick Christopher Callaway and his son Frederick Henderson Callaway, my Grandfather. Chris. Dix was born in Devonshire England, married in Manchester died in Newark, New Jersey. Frederick Christopher was born in Sussex, maried Anna Marie Stamp, died in Newark, New jersey. Have no specific dates on them at all, only conjectures. Frederick Henderson, my grandfather, was born in Newark New Jersey in 1841, married Margaret A. Scudderin Westfield, NJ in 1874 and died in Westfield at age 77 in 1919. I believe that Frederick Christopher was married to Electra McDougal, (MacDugal), sister of the minaturist, John McDougal, who was probably related to the General McDougal who fought in the Revolution and for whom McDougal's Alley in The Village, Manhattan, is named. My grandfather was married to -----Worn before he married my grandmother. They had a son, Frederick Henderson, jr. His wife died when the baby was very small and the child was raised by his maternal grandparents. He is shown in the 1870/1880 census living in one of the Oranges. The child was never mentioned in our family and maybe changed his name. As far as I know, one of my sons was the first child born out of the state of New Jersey, since my Callaways arrived in the US. There are no Peters or Josephs in our family, nor any southerners except my immediate family who moved south in 1971. Does anyone have any information on my Callaways?

Pat-here's some info that I've found regarding Larkin...Larkin was born in about 1812 in either VA or NC. He married Sarah "Sallie" Coffey who was born about 1808 probably in NC. Their children were: Lila Raney Calloway, Emmaline, Giles, Isabella, Jane and Samuel. Lila Raney (my gggrandmother) died in her 90's in Rabun County GA 25 Aug 1924. I was able to get a copy of her death certificate. She spelled her maiden name Calaway. She was married to Daniel Marcus and they lived where Lake Burton is located today in Rabun County, GA. I've been unable to find out who Larkin's father and mother were. I believe that Larkin's middle name may have been Samuel? Donna

There was a lengthy article on James Callaway of Ashe and Watauga Counties, N.C. in the 1999 Callaway Family Association Journal pages 61 - 68. There is a sketch of Larkin included. He may be the grandson of this James Callaway and son of Benjamin but we have not been able to document this. A William, James, Larkin, Fanny and Betsy Callaway all of this region do not fit in any other families. They may all have been siblings. Pat

This is just a reminder for those of us that are trouble tracing the whereabouts of a certain Calloway is try different spelling once and a while. When I first started researching my Calloway ancestors from Ashe Co., NC they were always spelled with an "O" not an "A" as most common. Then trying to research their history in TX and find out their name was spelled both ways, one time on a land grant for Shadrick Calloway it was spelled Calway not the traditional way. As I said in a earlier post, I got lucky and looks like I know now where they were buried. Probably wouldn't have noticed if they just had one person buried there, but it looks like most of the family decided to be buried there, maybe the price was right! There was one Calloway buried there that was not a child of Shadrick & Catherine a Hiram Calloway b. 1822 died 1900, maybe a brother or cousin. So people can look for a missing Hiram and maybe he will be the one. Keep the research going, all of you distant cousins of mine I am learning daily. Dave :-)

While trying to find a probate on a Catherine Calloway/Callaway I got lucky (it seems) and found out where she & most of her family got buried. Originally when doing research hoping to find something about the land they owned. Then instead of looking for Callaway (most hits) I tried Calloway and got lucky and found a cemetery in FT Worth area of TX where it looks like the family is buried. The parents of the family were Shadrick Calloway & Catherine (Baker) and quite a few of family after they passed on. The cemetery is called Birdville located in Haltom City, TX still looking for people to drop in and stay a while. Dave :-)

While searching for ancestors, especially Shadrick Callaway line that went to TX in 1860, I thought I got a good hit. Here was a Callaway living in Tarrant Co.,TX where my Callaway's settled. After emailing a few times, did find out we're related but not by Shadrick's immediate line. It turns out, thanks to Carl Callaway's great family tree, that it was one of our many greats Callaway's that were brothers. Carl Callaway's line went to GA then beyond while mine stayed in NC for another hundred years. It is always interesting to see where our ancestors came from then to find relatives is even more interesting no matter how far apart on that crooked old twisted tree. Dave

Callaway-Early-Anderson Bible Records. These records are on file in the Juliette Fauantleroy Manu. in the Jones Library, Lynchburg, Va.. They were copied from a bible published in 1829 in N.Y. They have been recopied and given to other libraries including Va. Archives. The bible (in 1929) was in the hands of Clara A. Snyder in Altavista, Va. The first entries on the typed page are from my direct line Charles,Sr. (Wm. Joseph). It also includes the John Anderson line (marr. Sarah Callaway.. and the Early line since Charles Marr. Judith Early Pate a young widow. a portion shown as "Laurel Grove, Va. May 7th 1887 goes back to the children of Joseph and lists the children of his son William. James Callaway the eldest son is shown as being born Dec. 25th, 1735. His parents William and Eliz. tilley were married Jan. 8, 1735. My ancestor's b.d. is also listed incorrectly. It is a long time between 1735 and 1887. Complete info on this bible was given in the Callaway Journal Vol. 2 dtd 1977 Page 52. It was also copied and published in the DAR Magazine about 35 yrs. ago. 1735 - 1736 it is obviously a typo.

Hi -- saw your query on our Callaway website. I will search some of our data and see if we can help you. Have you searched the 1850 and 1860 Franklin Co. census records? We have abstracted all names from 1790 - 1920 and now finishing 1930. Also how about the Slave records for Franklin Co. We need to isolate the Henry Callaway and find out who and where he was. Hi there, was curious if your Calloway/Callaway came to TX along with Shadrack Calloway and his family circa 1860? They were originally from Ashe Co., NC then settled in Tarrant Co. with their family maybe up to 14 children. Shadrack Calloway should be the gggrandson of Joseph Calloway originally from Caroline (Now Essex Co.) Co.,VA before the clan moved to the wilds of NC. Let me know if I am on the right track.

I am curious if anyone knows when Catherine Calloway died? She was the wife of Shadrack Calloway, both originally from Ashe Co, NC they emigrated to TX around 1859-60 to settle in Tarrant Co, TX. Last mention of her was in the 1880 census counted with daughter Mattie both widowed trying to farm while Catherine was raising the rest of her kids. Also does anyone really know how many children she had? I have seen two different versions one says she had 7, the other version said she had 12. Again I appreciate all and any responses. Dave

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone knew for sure when Mattie Calloway died? She was the daughter of Shadrack Calloway and Catherine Baker. Born sometime in 1848 Ashe Co, NC emigrated with family to Tarrant Co, TX sometime between 1859-60. I last saw her listed in the 1880 census of Tarrant Co, TX where she was counted living with her widowed mother while raising her son Tom. She married my gggranddad Eli Fitzwater supposedly sometime around 1862 and then there is no further mention of him either. I appreciate all and any responses. Dave

I have finally found the Francis Willis Callaway family in the 1860 census in Bee County, Texas. I still have not found the grave sites for Francis Willis Callaway and his daughter-in-law, Nancy Lodema Fleming Callaway who was married to his son, William David Callaway. F. W. died 24 Dec 1866 and Nancy Lodema died about 1873-74. Any info about the whereabouts of either grave would be greatly appreciated, Carl Callaway

I'm tracking my ancester Cassandra B. Calloway. She was married to Ambrose Edward Haley in 1842 in MO. I've found their burial site and records of them attending church and even Cassandra buying land but I can't find information on who her line originated from. She was born in 1822 in KY. I think her father was Steven W. Calloway. Any help would be appreciated.

We are interested, too. You should check our Callaway census from 1790 - 1920 (1930 will soon be available Callaways came into Va. in mid-1600's and have spread out over the entire U.S. Some came to Canada - usually later and then came down to New England area. Is Trowbridge a family name? This is a town in Wiltshire in England? Might be a clue for you. Pat Schnurr, Pres. CFA.
